You don't know the amount of times I get cut off by motor boats, most of the time they try to race me and they always cut me off. I think people in motor boats need to see this video more then other sailors. Thanks for this I hope people see this video.

Thank You Joe. These rules are always confusing and intimidating for the beginner. You made it very clear.

Be nice and make the manoeuvre soon enough and large enough so it is clear to the other boat what is going on and will understand. That is the "rule" I am using the most. You cannot count on the other boat knows the official rules, so it falls down to being nice anyway. I am windsufer over 10 years on our lake, sometimes on sea, couple of times in Vass as well. I am sure it is other story in racing and boating for work.

Great advice - make sure that the other boat knows what you are doing.

If the power boat is not moving, like all stationary boats, it has the right of way and moving boats must steer clear. The general idea is that the less manueverable boat will give way. For instance, an oil tanker, even under power, would be considered less maneuverable than a sailboat and would have right of way.

Like the capsized boat or the yacht at anchor. A lot of common sense should be engaged.

Great, have fun!
For those that are curious, rules of the road basically (with caveats) boil down to a hierarchy of mobility. Typically, the less mobile vessel is the "stand on" vessel. This isn't exactly an unlimited right of way. "Stand on" vessels have their own responsibilities, they are supposed to maintain their current course and speed as best as they can practically and predictably maintain it. A more maneuverable vessel to a situation's "stand on" vessel is the "give way" vessel. Both vessels are responsible for avoiding collision. Other than some likely mistakes I'll make and later return to correct, the basic hierarchy is this: (Properly) Anchored vessels stand on working vessels stand on swimmers stand on surfers stand on rowers stand on starboard tack sailors stand on windward sailors stand on leeward sailors stand on port tack sailors stand on motor vessels stand on overtaking vessels.

That's a great list. Thanks for sharing.
I was out in challenging higher wind conditions this year with a inexperienced light crew and a power boat pulling a water skier cut my upwind course and then dropped the skier right in front of me, it was a white knuckle few seconds getting power off to not capsize.

I can imagine. There's a lot of power boaters who do not respect the sailing boats.

Another great video--loved the mix of real life in real time with the diagrams. Can you please consider making one for racing? Even your analysis of a race that you have been in and/or other boats would be useful--especially starts and mark rounding and other nuances that are on the next level. Too easy for me to give you more work--feel free to ignore me :-)

I'll put that on the list. Yes i think it would be a good video.
Can confirm that in German it is just the other way around. Starboard tack is called Backbord(“port”)bug. Port tack is Steuerbord(“starboard”)bug. It is called after on which side the sail is/the boat is leaning to… just the naming is different. Same right of way rules apply of course.
@JoyriderTV

Same rules, different words - in German and Dutch the tack is described as the side that the sail is over rather than which side the wind is coming from. I'll talk about this in this week's Q+A
So useful

Great video Joe, there have been times when I need to go under a bridge and I encounter a power boat coming at me and I am on a close tack to wind and the bridge is pretty narrow. I believe I have the right of way and he needs to give way but he got mad when I held my course. Was I wrong??
@JoyriderTV

It depends on if he was restricted in his ability to manoeuvre or due to a deep water channel if he was a big one.
Cool. Beautiful area. Is the Hobie 16 a good place to start? Or can you recommend something better?
@JoyriderTV
3 жыл бұрын
It's good, there's a world of alternatives but the Hobie 16 is not the easiest but with proper technique and if you start with light winds it is a good choice.
Can you make a video on things to look forward when purchasing a small cat?

When two sailboats are going in the same direction, should the faster one pass on the windward or leeward side of the slower boat? I usually try to pass on the leeward side so I don't mess with their wind. If I am racing the other boat, then I pass them on the windward side.

Howdy JB...Leaha didn't release her gib and caused her to capsize? I thought releasing the gib came after taming the main and once boat is on new tact...
@JoyriderTV
2 жыл бұрын
from what she said, because she didn't release the jib coming out of the tack soon enough, it overpowered her - the wind was quite strong by that point. Yes, main gets let off first.
Alright bud I need you to answer a question for me that isn't easily googled. I've been watching a lot of your vids. I want to try this, but I live inland and I don't know if there is enough wind at the large lakes in my area for me to want to get into this. How do I sort this out?

@IWLDELJ

Visit "Windy.com" or download the "Windy" app and find your lake. If you have consistent wind speeds over four knots, you can sail. If you have consistent wind speeds over seven knots, you can have fun sailing.

The moment you used the phrase "Right of Way" I stopped watching. You will never read that phrase in the COLREGS except to say that there is no such concept at sea. The phrase is 'Stand On Vessel' and the concept of this is clearly defined.

Apologies for the wrong terminology. In small boat sailing 'Right of way' is so commonly used that I'd believe that is correct. Thanks for letting me know.
