Such a beautiful family tradition. My grandma use to making amazing food and, I never took the time to write the recipe down sadly, her recipes are forever lost. It's great seeing people keeping traditions and memories alive.

We have a video that was produced several years back, we hope it helps. It is quite detailed in the methods used to prepare the Saguaro fruit; kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGiJxMaHe7S3m6w.html The people of the Tohono O'odham tribe have special permissions to harvest the fruit in the park when it blooms, which they may sometimes have for sale in shops on the reservation. However, most of the fruit is used by the tribe for cultural and personal reasons. We at Saguaro National Park do not offer food products made from the Saguaro; but, if you want something with prickly pear, we've got you covered!

The family seen in this video are part of the local Tohono O'odham tribe, who have been harvesting the Saguaro fruit for generations and are allowed to harvest within the park. Members of the public that visit the park may try Saguaro fruit if available on their trip (considering no harm is done to the Saguaro in the process); however, it must be consumed and cannot be taken from the park. We hope that helps :)
