Safety first on blood bike runs

Ғылым және технология

When he’s not working as project manager and principal engineer at the Nuclear AMRC, David Anson volunteers with the Whiteknights Yorkshire Blood Bikes charity to safely carry medical material to where it’s urgently needed. For #BloodBikeDay 2023, he explains what he does, and the parallels with nuclear manufacturing.

I want to get back into motorcycling after a 20 year break, thing is I want a reason to ride rather than just doing it for fun. I am retired and have time to do this but I dont have a bike or the gear anymore and quite frankly cannot afford to run a bike really. Do you need to have your own bike or is it provided, I have full car and motorcycle licence but not advanced but I would want to go on courses before getting on 2 wheels again anyway.

What exactly is the legislation on running blue lights? From what I've read, Blood Bikers in certain areas are not permitted to run them. There was a news article about somebody who died who was running blue lights, and they said it was unlawful. If you're not allowed to use them, why do you have one? Just curious about it.

Do all blood bikes provide airbag vest? Do they provide 800cc?

Thanks for the questions. David says: "My understanding is that the costs of the air vests were paid by a charitable donation to Whiteknights so I do not know if they are standard issue across all the various regional Blood Bike charities. "Regarding South Yorkshire Whiteknights, we do have an 800cc bike - a BMW F800ST which is similarly liveried, but the other two Whiteknights regions only have R1200RT, R1200RTP, R1250RT and an FJR1300."
