BLOOD BIKERS | Omeleto Documentary

Фильм және анимация

A gang of bikers save lives.
BLOOD BIKERS is used with permission from David Hayes. Learn more at davidhayesfilm.com.
They don't look like typical riders, with a penchant for leather and intimidatingly tough-looking motorcycles. But these riders are part of a unique "gang" of sorts: they're an unknown but essential group of volunteers for England's National Health Service.
As part of their work, they carry much needed medical supplies -- blood, vital organs and even baby's milk -- around the U.K., saving the NHS money and time and being unsung heroes in the process.
Director David Hayes has crafted a short doc -- produced in association with Contra, a production company in London -- that pays tribute to these "blood bikers," who do vital and necessary work, often in the dead of night.
With a mix of perceptive interviews and dynamic camerawork and editing, this short documentary is a composite portrait that puts a face on the men and women criss-crossing the country, masked under the helmets and flying by on their bikes.
The film follows many of them as they receive calls, often in the dead of night, and then make their way as quickly as possible to hospitals with their supplies, criss-crossing the countries and cities of the U.K. on their life-saving errands.
The bikers have several different reasons for being involved: many have stories of loved ones who were hospitalized, and wanted to give back as a way to express gratitude. Others themselves found themselves in critical medical condition and were saved by transfusions and transplants.
What emerges is a composite of a small but essential community, often working in the middle of the night, alone and invisible, powered by a sense of altruism, gratitude and service to ideals that are bigger than themselves.
We often talk about "making a difference, but when we deconstruct the phrase, we realize what it truly means is understanding that the smallest role or action is vital to the larger system or whole. What BLOOD BIKERS does is make this idea visible and concrete, celebrating the often overlooked contributions of a small but heroic group of people with insight, intelligence and respect.

Message to Blood bikers : God bless you for applying your unique skillset\passion and taking up such a dangerous challenge to volunteer and put others lives before your own. You are the salt of the earth. Message to the current government of England: How dare you allow these incredibly skilled and selfless people to be unpaid volunteers, shame on you! There are so many grossly overpaid profession’s in both government and in private sector life…. To allow these life saving hero’s to be unpaid volunteers is absolutely criminal! Please fix your moral compass!!

In a medical emergency, the road becomes the veins and the blood bikers the immune bodies.

Very briefly I did organ transport using a Ford Escort Combi van, it looked like a police dog van & even had one of those spinning air vents on the roof. Anyway, as I mentioned I did some organ transport, sometimes blood, out of Victoria Coach station mostly. I sometimes drove on blue lights but I never got a job where the item was desperately needed, every time I rushed in to whatever hospital with the bag or box, there was never a sense of urgency ! It was always very anti-climatic, even though I had rushed through London traffic to get there. I even did a relay job one time that ended the same way, absolutely ridiculous was my experience, why was I rushing around for the hospital to just get to it as & when ?

When I think of what makes a really beautiful person, not fancy clothes and makeup and peacocking and posing. Doing things for others, serving society, taking risks that need to be taken, being in a good state, always ready.

It's strange that blood bikes aren't permitted to use blue lights and sirens. They're just normal road users but with important cargo.

Blood Bikers recently became a recognised part of the UK's emergency services. As such, we are allowed to use emergency blue lights (just like the police, fire brigades and ambulance services), and, in times of emergency, and given that the terrain and conditions permit it, can surpass the posted speed limit, as well as move through red lights. Again, this is done by trained riders with advanced qualifications, and many of our members from our teams are ex and current service staff (military and other services, like Police) that are trained in fast response driving.

Currently Blood bikes are not covered under Section 19 , thus this does not permit the "surpassing" of a speed limit nor does this allow moving through a Red light
