SAFAR - "Rag Behrawi in Teen Taal"

SAFAR (engl: "journey") is a project for which the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar invited five high-class musicians from Afghanistan to present traditional music for which their country has been famous and which has been forbidden under the Taliban regime for decades. This is a piece called "Rag Behrawi in Teen Taal" from the concert that took place on July 4th, 2012 at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.
The musicians and their traditional instruments appearing in this piece are:
Ustad Ghulam Hussain - Rubab
Ustad Amruddin - Dilruba
Jawed Mehmood - Tabla
Abdul Latif - Dhol
Usted Mohammad Ehsan Irfan - Tanbur
Ahmad Samin - Rubab student

    Afghanistan is a country of warriors. This child is also fighting a war in a different battlefield. Talibans hate music. But that has not stopped him from living with it. Holy Qurran preaches and spreads peace. Music does the same. Biggest names in world music are Muslims. Please don't misinterpret your holy books as your wish. Love from India.

    I always felt love and respect for pushtoons I think it's because my forefathers are from ghazni Afghanistan we moved to subcontinent / India about 300 years ago presently know as Punjab Pakistan.

    If you are referring to the video here, let me tell you something. All musicians in this video speak Farsi as their native language. And even their last names are Tajik/Persian. Afghans are not all pashtuns, and the music they say is theirs is not theirs, its either classical Indian music played on Rubab, which was invented by Tajiks of Afghanistan or are Farsi songs played on Rubab.

    El rubab es un antiguo artefacto musical originario de Afganistán que tuvo gran peso en la música oriental. No obstante, tras largos años de barbarie, parecía destinado a la chatarra, si no hubiese sido por el encuentro meritorio de músicos apasionados, que in situ supieron guardar las ascuas de su musicalidad, y el concurso de otros locos divinos diseminados por el mundo, como el conjunto valenciano que anima Efrén López Sanz, Ross Daly y su escuela de músicas tradicionales en Creta o el Rubab Lovers and Players que desde Facebook mantiene una red de intérpretes significativa (Homayun Sakhi, Fady Zakar, Khaled Arman, Abdullah Jassin, Ali Tavakoli, Noor Khan, Kengo Saito, Michel Oud, Peppe Frana, Sylvain Roy … ). Sin contar el grupo de intérpretes europeos y afganos que animan SAFAR, al darse como misión reavivar la música en ese país desolado por la codicia y el odio. La vieja historia del rubab no le preveía tan drástico destino, pues el “león de los instrumentos” encarna el toque de aquellos valles; cordófono tan relevante que aunque la música india influyera en la afgana, el rubab estuvo a la base del sarod indio. Mas eso sirvió de poco frente al furor bélico y a cuantos se creían en posesión de la Única Verdad. De ahí mi emoción ante este dúo emblemático entonando un devenir común.

    I am also learning the rubob as a ten year old boy but I think it will take about two or three more years to get to the level of just the boy!!! I am also learning this rag! I loved the music each person played very well and now i'm learning from them.
