Correction- Natya Shastra was composed in 600-500BC in Sanskrit, written later( the oldest copy still existing is 1st-2nd century CE). The 3rd Sangam literatures in the 400-300BC did mention dances and festivals dedicated to different gods/goddesses like Seyyon( Murugan/Kartikeya in north), Mayon( considered as Vishnu or Varuna now), Kotravai( Kali Maa or a similar goddess) in Tamil lands, but we can infer similar folk dances like Kol attam and classical dances like Dasi/Sadir Attam had been practiced since then, which is inferred from post AD literatures. Although Sadir attam is derived mainly from Natya Shastra, it was mostly practiced/fostered by Tamils and some Kannadigas till the 1920s historically and has both Sanskrit or Tamil words for movements. Growing Missionary influence and diminishing status/funds to temples led to exploitation of Devadasis and pushed them to prostitution ultimately. It was more so in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Northern India( via Mughals). However Odisha and Assam were immune to this disgrace. Historically, Devadasis had a chaste and respected position who looked over temple affairs, had lands and remained celibate all their lives. In Odisha and Assam, boys also joined the temples as dancers since the 14th century AD as evident by Bhokots in Assam and Gotipuas in Odisha.

I see some academic schools have already added traditional dance forms in their Co-curricular activities at school. Long way to go though!

Bharathamuni is the name of sage who delivered this dance form through Natyasastra to world. Thus Bharatha owed half name of this dance form 🙂

I don't know who named it as Bharatanatyam but it's real name is Dasi Attam which is the tamil word and the name was derived from Devadasis. First it was called Dasi Attam then it was slowly called as Bharatanatyam, lol stop playing with us sanskrit people..

@@02abishekprasad91 no one ever stole bruh sanskrit seem to be offical language of india even tamil kings went to combodia and wrote sanskrit in tamil script in temples, lot of them had Sanskrit names too. its awful to see how tamilians have this superiority complex out of no where, pretty sure bharthnatyam would have been official dance of india but due to invasions the culture,dance,tradition everything is lost in north and is preserved in south doesn't means EVERYTHING has origins from south it can be mix contribution inspired from Sanskrit texts codified it in its own local form. However proof matters and oldest records of origin of carnatic music, hinduism, bharthnatyam are all in Sanskrit so u can't blame others on stealing it if ur literature couldn't codify them.

Bharatanatyam, also known as the mother of all other classical dance styles, is considered as the oldest dance forms in the country India that originated from the temple dancers in Tamil Nadu. The dance is a pure amalgam of expressions, music, beat and rhythm. You people are stolen ours so you don't have any rights to talk about it...

Is there a specific 'Christian' dance? Kindly do not pollute the art forms with religious diversities. Bharatanatyam is an 'Indian dance' and not 'Hindu dance'. Of course we learn/dance on Hindu deities, that's because India is a Hindu country. But that shouldn't restrict the art form to be used by other religions. Please see dance as a dance, and not as a religious act.
