Rukmini Devi Arundale: The Bharatnatyam Pioneer | Feminism in India
A Phone rang in Adyar, Chennai in 1977. It was meant for Rukmini Devi Arundale, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, a theosophist, an activist for animal welfare and the first woman in Indian history to be nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India.
On the other line of the phone was the then Prime Minister of India 'Morarji Desai'. He asked her if she would consent to be the President. "President of what", she asked. “President of India,” said the prime minister.
She politely declined the offer.

Rukmuni Devi Arundale was born in February 29,1904 and died on February 24,1964was an India Theophist,Bharatanayam dancer Coreographer,And animal rights,Chaimpsigner,She was the first women to net nominated fore elections fore indian upper body of parliament of rijiya Shabha.The most original rivelry from Bharatanayam from its original Shadhir Style prevelenr amongst the temple dancers,The devadasies,she also worked fore the re- establishment fore indian cultural and traditional belives.
