    Love how Jason simplifies his part on the last main riff toward to end to make it even heavier, when Lars goes hard and heavy on the crash. Brilliant move.

    He's just adding the low fifth of the power chords. Having the extra base note gives a more full sound to the chords. If you do it on an acoustic it almost sounds like it's distorted because of the overtones created.

    @@Nickthebassist01 Baritones are normally tuned to B standard, so this is a bit confusing. It's tuned an octave below a _normal_ guitar in D standard, so the same octave as the Bass. I think alot of the heavy is actually the pickups on those things; single coils aren't normally considered heavy, but they cut through well when you're downtuned so much.

    actually jason has 2 bass channels. clean and distorted, as well as james playing a baritone guitar. this gives the song that ultra heavy sound.

    Damn listen at :53 with headphones on. You can here the studio nose in the background and the track Jason is playing to. The distorted part is actually James playing on a baritone Danelectro.Watch a "Year and a Half in the Life" and you see James play it with a seafoam green baritone.

    if you want to try get the same distortion part that has James and his baritone guitar with just bass, play with distortion and use power chords (yes power chords on low bass strings), it sounds pretty close and really does the trick live

    Actually, no. 4 string bass tuned down a whole step (D, G, C, F). In live versions, he uses a 5 string, also tuned down a whole step (A, D, G, C, F), but this version is a downtuned 4 string.

    I read somewhere that James overdubbed a Six string bass like a Fender Bass Six, I also heard Kirk told him it was a bad idea and hated it because it sounded "Muddy"

    Icaanul And Dave’s egocentric personality is why Megadeth have been a joke for decades while Metallica are one of the biggest bands in the world. Dave is a fucking asshole and if he’d stayed in Metallica they wouldn’t have got past the club circuit.

    Yeah, you can hear the clean signal behind it, that's Jason, Jason never used two channels, ever in his recording, it had to be someone else. This is a cool instrumental, it's funny how many people have the song covered wrong.

    Jason played a 4 string on this but it was strung with B, E, A, D strings from a 5 string set. The low B was tuned down to A.

    Agreed. Jason was probably the best bassist for the full mix of the band. Cliff tried to do too much to really fit in properly with the tight metal style of music that Metallica went for ultimately.

    Yeah he definately had the best sounds and perfect less is more thing to it. Perfect bass tracks for them. The bass should not stick out so much on the tracks. If its not a solo or something like in Ktulu and Orion.

    Well Cliff did a really good job at fitting in though. People seemed to like them until the Black Album when people began to say they were “selling out”. But I think Cliff fit in absolutely perfectly, like Jason

    @OneMeanDragon hahh i have a five string now and i totally know what you mean. I gotta admit, i like the downtuned sound...but tuning that far down is inconvenient,..and somewhat impractical. the fifth string makes it so much easier, and makes the sound much cleaner with less buzz.

    I agree, I would say that Jason has a better groove than Cliff which is likely why they found their greater mainstream success with Jason, but for the original ethos of the band I dont think anybody could match Cliff.

    nope atleast i dont think so what he does is have his strings tuned a half step down so hes playin a open E (which is now D) and 7th fret A (which is now F) so it sounds distorted

    Someone needs to get the time stamp for the apparent baritone guitar in A Year in the Life of Metallica. That sounds awfully similar to my Spector when I run a heavy distortion pedal in the chain.

    yo, it really is hard to replicate the spector-ampeg combo's sound but you can always boost low mids and high mids for some punch and growl, little bit of highs for clarity little bit of mids for for weight and as a bridge for low and high mids. You decide your lows by experimenting. I don't know how your current setup sounds but that's a quick tip from me.

    Guys.. Cliff was just a guitarist that playing bass. He was amazing guy and very big part of Metallica, but Jason was just the perfect fit for the Metallica, so stop saying "he's not so good as Cliff". It's fucking hilarious

    The best Metallica in my opinion started with And Justice For All and ended when Jason left. His era was incredibly good! As I have gotten older, the Load albums have even grown on me. But the black album will always be the bassiest album they ever did.
