Nobody thought Nate was some lamb for the slaughter. Conor was coming up to a catch-weight... giving up a huge height, reach and natural weight advantage. That was the equalizer for that match. The mma world may have wanted Mcgregor to win to add to his legend, but experts knew the experienced dangerous Diaz would present a real task. Remember, the second fight went the distance with both fighters a mess and coulda gone either way in the decision.

I’m talking strictly about the first fight where Mcgregor closed nearly a -400 favorite, if that doesn’t show that the experts expected him to win and easily then I don’t know what. . Your missing a big detail that Nate had taken the fight on 2 weeks notice because RDA got injured and pulled out of the fight vs Conor. Also at that point in his career Mcgregor had yet to show a big weakness looking good against tested fighters like Chad Mendez, Poireir, and fresh off a quick win against Aldo it seemed like he would be too fast and accurate for a Nate Diaz who had previously been out struck by Josh Thompson.

I cannot explain how happy it makes me that Roxanne Modafferi is a professional cage fighter. She is basically every nerdy girl from high school who had a black belt in some martial art that nobody took seriously. She stuck with it and has way more street cred than any of the guys who probably bullied her in high school, and there's nothing any of them can do about it.

Gonzaga beating Cro Cop is the ultimate example of a sacrificial lamb winning and messing up future plans. They had Couture on commentary that night to do a staredown with Mirko after the fight. I think they learned that night that if you have the fight, MAKE the fight. Don't assume anything because assumptions often go wrong.

McGregor wasn't that big of a favorite against Diaz. Sure he was on a tear, but he was moving up in weight against a good boxer who's bigger and had a much better ground game. Yes the betting odds were in McGregor's favor, but mostly due to popularity instead of skill. Most people who know MMA gave Diaz a solid chance to win.

Context is important. At the time Mirko was considered almost invincible (he never lost before) and he was coming into his own as an MMA fighter. While Kevin despite being a former UFC HW champion, was regarded as somewhat of a has-been and was well known for his inconsistency. Few could have predicted Kevin actually following his corners game-plan (he almost never did prior) which was taking advantage of a small hole in Mirko's game when he setup his trademark high-kick to explode forward with a left hand. Kevin Randleman could have been an all time great with a world-class corner and good fight IQ, he was freakishly athletic. Before there was Yoel Romero, there was Kevin Randleman.
