Sacred Waters: The Okefenokee in Peril

Sacred Waters, presented by OPA with the generous support of the National Parks Conservation Association, takes viewers into the heart of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, showcasing its mystical natural beauty, cultural importance, and incredible ecological value. But, as the title of the film sets forth, the sacred waters of the Okefenokee are in peril. The threat of a proposed mineral mine near the edge of the Okefenokee looms large, putting the natural integrity of the Swamp at risk. As Sacred Waters brings us deeper into the Okefenokee, we understand how great this threat truly is.

I've lived in Georgia for most of my life and this film brings the Okefenokee swamp to justice. It highlights the importance of swamp preservation and hopefully industries and individuals will make more of an effort to maintain the swamp.

This video has really opened my eyes to the value of swamp ecosystems. Often when we think of swamps, we think of dirt. However, the Okefenokee is a perfect example of how important swamp ecosystems are, not only for ourselves, but for the hundreds/thousands of organisms that depend on it. This video was the perfect introduction for swamp conservation.

The Okefenokee swamp is such an important, delicate resource currently in danger. I hope more people can watch this amazing documentary and be moved to fight against unethical mining and for the protection of our natural resources.

Who is the gentleman at 4:27? Beautiful video! I hope they keep Okefenokee safe forever! I usually disagree with Rousseau, but to this type of nature he was on point.

Very interesting film. I hate that there is a threat of a mineral mine near the edge of the beautiful Okefenokee river. I hope Sacred Waters is able to keep the river clean and beautiful!

Around the eight minute mark the guy says the Okefenokee could support the Panther again I live by this swamp, and locals have shared photos taken from their game trails of panthers. One was even a black panther, in this region. The one photo I saw was amazing, as the deer went to eat the feed and the photo snapped, at that precise moment a panther had lunged for it's neck. And I've heard locals that have heard the scream of the panther deep in there. I haven't been luck, or unlucky enough to ever have a personal encounter. But I definitely want to hear it haha.

Before watching this video, I had very minimal knowledge about swamps in general. It never came to cross my mind how many stories revolve around the Okefenokee swamp, how special it could be to some people who are passionate about nature and wildlife, and how many species' lives depend on that piece of wetland. I love how beautiful the swamp and the wildlife around it is, and it's truly disheartening to see it being negatively impacted by the creation of the mine...

I spent four days kayaking and camping in the swamp a few weeks ago and loved the experience. I live six hours away, but I'll be back in the Fall because there are no comparable water trails anywhere near me, and few exist in the world. I used titanium cookware on the trip, so I know the value of mining, but I'll err on the side of conservation; however, I'd like to see a documentary on this controversy give the mining company a fair hearing.

This beautiful documentary brought light to the importance of preserving the swamps. Before this class and documentary, I had never heard of the Okefenokee Swamp. It was eye-opening to see how important the swamp is as it impacts other the existence of other rivers tied to it. I also was very surprised to see how clear the swamp was, which can explain why people come to visit it and spend time in nature. People are unaware of the huge risk this place is at, and the impacts of mining that affect Okefenokee.

I went canoeing here with my dad when I was a kid, back then I could only think about the gators and spiders. Now looking back on the memory, I really appreciate the beauty.

Although I grew up in Georgia, I was unaware of the existence of the Okefenokee Swamp. I was even less aware that the Okefenokee swamp was the largest blackwater swamp in North America. Seeing parts of it in this video makes me hope to see the swamp in person one day. I’ll have to plan a visit with some friends.

It’s crazy how delicate these swamp ecosystems can be. There’s a lot of places like Okefenokee in Florida and sadly they don’t have nearly as much protection as they should.

It is wild that there is place that supports so much wild life in Georgia and I had no idea. I find it inspiring that so many people visit to adventure and explore the wildlife. I hope it is preserved because so many places get overrun and ecosystems get destroyed.
