I'm neither an expert nor a scholar, but I suggest this is a very trenchant and insightful analysis, the best I've heard of The Overland Campaign.

Surely General Grant was not concerned with time in the Overland Campaign. I believe he told a lousy reporter " I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." Clearly that remark from Grant does not seem too concerned with the time it will take to defeat the rebellion.
