Sacramento Traffic Accidents & Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

I'm Mike Hackard from Hackard Law. Our firm serves individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries due to the carelessness of others.
The 2024 California Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) provides a data-driven analysis of fatal and serious injury collisions across all roadways in California. The plan examines various regions, road types, and collision causes.
The Sacramento region includes a twelve-county area that encompasses the region's most populous counties, Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer Counties.
The data reveals that around two-thirds of fatal and serious accidents occur on non-state highways. Additionally, urban settings account for approximately two-thirds of these incidents.
Today, I'll be focusing on the data from both the California statewide perspective as well as the specific trends in the Sacramento region. This information is crucial in understanding the challenges we face and the steps we can take to improve road safety and protect vulnerable road users.
By reviewing the SHSP data, we can identify the most common collision types, high-risk locations, and contributing factors. This knowledge will enable us to advocate for targeted safety interventions and infrastructure improvements that can reduce the incidence of traumatic brain injuries resulting from traffic accidents. That way we can work towards a future where all road users can travel safely and with peace of mind.
Many collisions involve more than one factor and are counted in multiple groups.
Intersections, Interchanges, and Other Roadway Access points constitute 43% of all California fatalities, with the number being 37% for Sacramento.
Alcohol and Drug Impairment accounts for 42% of collisions statewide, and 44% in the Sacramento region.
Speeding and Aggressive Driving is a factor in 28% of California crashes and 26% in Sacramento.
Roadway Departure and Head-on Collisions make up 26% of incidents statewide and 38% in the Sacramento area.
Driver Licensing and Competency is a contributing element in 25% of California collisions and 24% in Sacramento.
Pedestrians are involved in 23% of statewide crashes and 19% in the Sacramento region.
Aging Drivers, Motorcycles, Young Drivers, Commercial Vehicles, Distracted Driving, Bicycling, and Work Zones also play varying roles in the collision data at both the state and local levels.
