A team can only beat the opponents they face. If France,Germany etc had won their groups then they would not have all played each other in the same hlf. England(however mediocre) won their group so you play weaker opponents.

However the players do often get overhyped before the tournament starts n then underperform when it really matters. Kane, Foden, Bellingham - all had great seasons but severely underperformed in the euros.

Which striker this tournament that started every game played well? Every single team in the tournament sets up to not give the striker a chance hence why most striker moments are often from a substitute e.g. Weghorst or Watkins as they play against tired legs. No striker would start and play well this tournament simply because teams set up to nullify strikers. This also explains why most of the best players this tournament have been attacking midfielders/wingers as they have a lot more space to express themself. E.g, Guler, Gakpo, Olmo, Yamal, Musiala. We should really be questioning why our players in these positions (Foden and Bellingham) have severely underperformed. This simply wasn't a tournament for strikers.

THe real problem is the reliance of over the hill english players if watkins was spanish he'd be starting like yamal but kanes rep bought him the position and that was the problem.

I spent most of the game fuming at Pickford's relentless hoofing the ball up the pitch, giving it back to Spain when we needed to keep possession. Unbelievable.

The fact that England lost to the worst Brazilian side in decades (who got beaten in the group of 8 at Copa) and Iceland should have been evidence enough that the team underachieves.

Both Southgate and Scaloni are pragmatic managers but Scaloni has the balls to make big changes to go straight at the weakness of the opponent. That's the difference between a guy who won 4 consecutive finals vs a guy who lost two finals

What is this laughable notion that we have world class players and better players than Spain? Lets compare our starting 11s: Pickford = Simon Walker = Carvajal Cucurella > Shaw (Shaw has been injured since February) Laporte > Guehi Stones > Le Normand Rodri >> Rice Ruiz > Mainoo Yamal = Saka (being generous to Saka) Williams > Foden (Foden is playing out of position) Bellingham > Olmo (Pedri would be =) Kane > Morata (but Morata works harder and is more mobile) Where exactly are our "world class" players? Our only world class players are Kane and TAA (who doesn't even start), IMO. Foden and Bellingham have world class potential. But potential is potential. Walker used to be world class defensively, but he's now 34. That's it. None of our other players are anything close to world class. Meanwhile, Spain have Rodri and Laporte (who I'd say was world class before he fell out of favour at City). Everyone on planet Earth can see we need players to run in behind in our attack. And Mark is correct about Pickford CONSTANTLY booting the ball long. It's all he does and he's always done it. We're terrified of playing out from the back, and always have been. But when we have no runners in behind it makes it very easy for the opposition to push up, which makes it all the harder to play out from the back and for our midfielders to get on the ball or make forward passes.

Glad you're highlighting this, seemed to be a major factor in Spanish possession. Practically every goal kick or pass back resulted in Spain receiving the ball.

Don't forget the beautiful Southgate trick of getting the ball all the way up into an attacking position and then just slowly passing it back all the way to Pickford, who then kindly shoots it back to the spanish players. A great southgate trick is to have the players pause for a few seconds to lull the opposition into thinking something might actually happen, then go back to passing it between each other (and in this game passing it to another Spanish player).
