The first spray we’re going to be looking at is the Sabre Red Compact Pepper Spray with Clip which is probably the most affordable pepper spray you can buy. All of the Products from Sabre we’re going to be looking at in this video have the Sabre Red formula which has a 1.33% MC content and UV marking dye which is sold in most states. This pepper spray has a twist top safety and to use it you just slide it counter clockwise and then you can press down with your thumb.
This next product is the Sabre Red Pepper Gel. It has a 1.33% MC content along with UV marking die and this gel is designed to fire a tighter and more accurate stream compared to the gel to lessen the chance of cross contamination but there’s also less chance that it will be inhaled by the attacker compared to the other 2 formulas so you need to be sure to hit your target directly in the eyes. It also has the same twist top safety mechanism.
This is Sabre’s 3 in 1 spray which is Comprised of pepper spray, CS military tear gas to increase the burning sensation and UV marking dye. The 3 in 1 has a lower MC content so it will be less effective than the other 2 models in the attackers eyes but it will most likely create more respiratory distress for the attacker.

People get to wrapped up in brands and OC percentages. 10% OC means 10% of the can is OC and 90% is propellant. That has nothing to do with effectiveness. Neither does the SHU rating. The pure OC extract or resin used can be listed at 2.3 million SHU (which sounds great) but once that is watered down with 90% propellant that also knocks the SHU to 230,000. Look at the Major Capsaicinoid(MC) percentage and that will give you an idea of heat and effectiveness(the higher the MC % the hotter the product). If the can doesn’t have the MC percentage listed somewhere on the label and just has the percentage of OC in the can stay away from that product. Any major reputable brands will list this on their product. Anything 0.7% MC up to 1.4% MC should serve you well, anything over that is pointless. UDAP mugger fogger is 3%MC which is overkill in my opinion. Sabre I believe has the most consistency in MC percentage between batches of OC spray on the market. They list the Sabre red line at 1.33%. Keep in mind that is plus or minus a little, one batch could be 1.2% and one could be 1.4% just due to manufacturing variances. I have carried Sabre Red crossfire in the stream version working as a LEO for quite a while and have never had it be completely ineffective. People high on drugs or intoxicated on alcohol may not get the full effect of burning and respiratory distress but it will still cause involuntary eye closure which is what you want with OC spray. That allows a prepared citizen to retreat from the threat or allows a LEO to make contact with the subject without them knowing where you are which helps in gaining control faster. Most law enforcement agencies unless dictated by stupid policies and guidelines use product that fall between 0.7-1.4%MC. I have had full exposures 5 times from different brands(Sabre, Aerko, Def Tech, CTS, vexor) and all have sucked. If you would ask me which hurt more I wouldn’t be able to tell you. A body can only perceive so much pain before it’s hard to tell the difference and all of the products I have been exposed to have made me reach that pain threshold where all of them mostly feel the same. As far as blended sprays (OC/CS) a lot of instructors I have spoken to say to stay away from them. When most companies make a blend spray they water the OC down to add the CS. Very few companies keep a high MC% when mixing CS in a product. I can’t speak for Sabre 3 in 1 but I think the most effective blend sprays are from Aerko (freeze +p) which I have had exposure too and it sucked bad, a high level of respiratory distress as well as a very intense burn and eye closure. Redd (NW defense products house brand) seems to be a good option for a blend spray as well, I feel it was modeled along the same lines as Freeze +p from Aerko. Def Tech also makes a OC/CS mix that is still 1.3%MC with the addition of CS. I would imagine that would be very effective also. For the people that say pepper gel doesn’t cause respiratory distress I challenge you to empty half a can or so of pepper gel into an enclosed or partially enclosed room and see if it’s comfortable to breathe in there. I have done so and I can say that even with gel there is still respiratory distress, maybe not as severe as a non gel spray but it’s still there. The conclusion to my long winded comment is just pick a good reputable brand whether it is just OC or OC/CS whether it’s gel or spray and learn to use it and you’ll be in good shape. OC is a good middle ground between a harsh word and physical force so the areas of use are far greater than a firearm which I carry also.

I added a simple push pin in order to reduce the likelihood of this happening. I'd highly recommend doing something similar to anyone that already owns the product in question, though I DEFINITELY would not recommend buying it for exactly the same reason. Anything as important as this should not require modification, and it's pretty appalling that saber didn't anticipate the safety being a huge problem.

I’ve been sprayed with both. Both were very effective. The OC/CS did have an enhanced burning sensation in my eyes and on the skin, it also lasted longer. Basically it had a heightened pain response, but both made my eyes slam shut and reduced breathing to short shallow breaths. Both formulas are very effective and can’t say one is better than the other. In terms of effectiveness, most of the legitimate brands will cause the effects chemical agents are known for.
