@@terminator572 Romans defeated the Macedonian phalanx nothing to do with Spartans. Also you cant go around a Spartan shield wall every man was trained in every type of combat close to mid range with a lack of long range weaponry and tactics that was used by they re enemy to just sit back and throw arrows at them.In close combat they were the best of the best. They re downfall came when they losened they re standards and began allowing anyone to be a spartan soldier.

Dimitris kouz Spartans were a different kind of breed of Greek men. And they had different cultures that the other Greeks didn’t, like if you were deformed they would either kill you or leave you in the forest, whereas the other Greeks did not. So therefore I see Spartans and people from like Athen as to different breeds.

Donovan Klier there were only 300 Spartans at the battle, the rest of the force ~7000 were from other Greek Cities (Athens, Thebes, Thespia, Corinth, etc.). And at the last stand there were 800 other Greeks with the Spartans, 700 Thespians & 100 Thebans. Like the Spartans, the Thespians were killed to the last man, but the Thebans surrendered when their positions were being overrun (Thebes eventually switched sides and fought with Persia until the region of Boeotia was liberated)

For anyone that is offended by this song, do known that: 1. This war take place hundreds of year before the Biblical and crusade nonsense follow a few era latter. During this Greek vs Persian war, the Persian was on a massive conquest, the Greek is simply defending themselves from a every growing empire. 2: the ideal was a superior gods or an only gods was not considered or supported or even care. Warrior and soldier are just that, the “slaughter Persian” is simply “I kill you because you invade my land” stuff. Beside if you ask any Spartan about racists, they would not care. Their model is “fight well and have tons of muscle”.

It was a coalition of various other city states such as Corinthians, Athenians, etc. Spartans were the minority in the force though the best warriors among them. The "traitor" wasn't a spartan it was a local shepherd who revealed to the Persians an old path that led behind the Greek forces that allowed them to essentially nullify the tactical advantage they had by fighting at Thermopylae by attacking them from both the front and the rear. The last stand happened on the third day of the battle which was after the rest of the coalition fled to regroup and survive to fight again with the Spartans remaining to try and hold them off long enough for the others to regroup with reinforcements. Side note +FBI the Athenians and the Spartans had rather warm relations at the time this was prior to the Delian and Peloponnesian leagues forming. It wasn't until after the formation of the Delian league that Spartan and Athens began to really hate each other. The Spartans viewing the Delian league as the main opponent to Spartan hegemony within Greece. The traitor is commonly believe to be Ephialtes of Trachias which was an independent city state just west of the battle site.

Although the Persians vastly outnumbered their enemy, the Spartans weren't the only ones resisting. Anyone with some knowledge of history can tell you this is about the Battle of Thermopylae, and although their were only about 300 hoplites, their was a total of roughly 8000 Greeks against an uncertain but vastly outnumbering army of Persians.

I think that there are three reasons Leonidas chose to remain with some of his men in certain death while making the rest retreat One: If there wasn’t a force to hold back the advancing Persians, the retreating force would have been killed anyway Two: Personal pride. He could not live with himself if he was to flee and surrender all of free Greece with him. Three: Motivation. In the same way that the battle of Fort Sumter united the North and pushed support for the Civil War, the battle of Thermopylae served as a motivator for Greece to resist Persian rule. When heroes die protecting you against all odds, knowing they were to die, the people feel an obligation to uphold their deaths. They feel and obligation to preserve what the perished heroes wanted to protect.
