========= Killing Ground LYRICS ==========
Frozen ground
Ride with the wind
Emerge from the gunsmoke like demons
Rehnskiöld’s men
Charging their flanks
The enemy trembles with fear
One by one the Saxons disband
Or die where they stand
Killing ground
Even though you surrender
Turn around
You will never survive
Killing ground
At the battle of Fraustadt
Fall in line
Battle formations
Show no fear
Riding them down
Break their will
Show them no mercy
Caroleans attack
Round them up, look into their eyes
They beg for their lives
See the Caroleans standing tall
All for one and one for all
Enemies fall at their feet
Begging for their mercy
See the Caroleans standing tall
Conquer lands and slaughter all
Enemies fall at their feet
Victory and great defeat
========= Historic Fact ==========
During the Battle of Fraustadt, the Swedish forces faced an army almost twice its size and were victorious. On that day the Swedes showed the world its superiority during battle.

    I love how Killing Ground ends and seedlessly transitions into Poltava. From The Swedish Empire's greatest victory to its most disastrous defeat.

  • @tree4104

    @tree4104

    8 ай бұрын

    This battle wasnt necessarily the Swedish Empire's greatest victory but it was one of the earliest decisive victories of the great northern war that established Sweden as a formidable force. The Swedish version of the song has a much bigger emphasis on the attrocities committed by Swedish forces to the captured enemies (not my translation): "See how the Russians surrender, Begging for mercy Mass murder, not heroism Caroleans take revenge honor is lost." I like to think the brutality shown by the Swedish is perhaps one of the contributing factors that motivated their enemies to keep fighting despite losing so badly time and time again. Eventually this would culminate in the disastrous Battle of Poltava that effectively neutered Swedish military might. The Russians simply returned "an eye for an eye"

    I always thought that the English and Swedish songs from Carolus Rex were quite identical. Today I learnt, they are not. The English version almost glorifies the battle and Swedish heroism while the Swedish version deals with the far more severe topic of war crimes. Fascinating!

    As a kid, my great grandfather sparked a love of history with his tales of his time in the British Homeguard during WW2. Then as a teenager school was hell bent on extinguishing that interest, that passion! I'm glad I found sabaton in my 20s to reignite that passion! Especially carolus. School barely covered our own history, they really didn't bother with world history. Hastings, the somme and D Day. That was your lot in my school! Glory to the Russian auxiliary corps, that despite the betrayal of the Saxons (who began to flee from the battlefield), the French and Swiss mercenaries (who immediately surrendered and turned their weapons against the former allies) put up fierce resistance to the enemy and the surviving remnants of which still managed to break through and retreat.

    Шведы радостно поют, как разбили саксонцев. Правда, немножко забывая, что, кроме саксонцев, там ещё было около 6000 русских, которых шведы в плен не брали, как европейцев, а просто добивали штыками. Уцелело 1500-1600.

    Поётся про Битву при Фрауштадте где Шведы разбили союзные войска Саксонии и России. Шведы применили тактику Каролинеров которые порвергли Саксонцев в Бегство, Русские вспомогательные полки стояли до последнего и будучи в окружении некоторые пожелали сдаться в плен, но Шведские солдаты убивали всех без разбору. И по этому победа опорочена кровавым исходом
