The Battle of Verdun is important for several reasons. First, it is the longest continuously-running battle in human history: 303 days. At the end of the battle, there were over 700,000 casualties. The Battle of Verdun is also the direct inspiration for the Battle of Minas Tirith in Lord of the Rings, as well as being an inspiration by Tolkien for one of Gandalf's famous lines in the Mines of Moria: "You shall not pass!"

The battle of Verdun had around the same casualties as the whole American civil war. It's incredible how the development of weapons can both increase and decrease the amount of deaths in wars.

  • @surcoufcorsaire

Limit the number of deaths? the first world war was the bloodiest in human history... the battle of Verdun, 700,000 (for both sides - French and German) died in 303 days in a very small area of a few kilometers from the front line. And I'm not talking about the battle of the Somme (English against Germans), the battles of the departments of Aisne, Vosges... (French against Germans)... In total, France lost 1,397,800 soldiers , UK 994,138 soldiers, USA 117,465 soldiers (only), Russians 3,311,000 soldiers (incredible)... Germans 2,462,897 soldiers dead, Austria-Hungary 1,567,000 dead... I don't think the american civil war had more dead... and i'm not counting turkey, australia, belgium...

The First World War was the most violent in every way. Horror in all its glory!!! the number of deaths from the Second World War takes into account civilian losses (European population, Shoah, Asian population, etc.), i.e. 2/3 of the figure given! From a purely military point of view, the First World War is called "La Der des Ders". I live in the Somme department in France, to the east of my department, there are still the sad vestiges of the First World War, the Battle of the Somme (Franco-British sector), Thiepval, Beaumont-Hamel. .. military cemeteries as far as the eye can see! every year the farmers dig up the bodies of the former soldiers and the gendarmerie (military police) carry out an investigation to find the identity and the nationality of the body... we still have trenches preserved for memory and I understand better than you this song of Sabaton from my department, which still bears the scars, more than 100 years later... My great grandfather died in Verdun, 17 days before the French victory in this battle, rest his soul. I can understand that the civil war in the USA affects you particularly because it is your country (confiscated from the natives) and your history, but these are two different wars!!! It's not all about the USA (young nation). In Europe, war has always existed between peoples (of equivalent power) between English/French/German/Spanish/Italian/Russian... and that long before Jesus Christ... Besides, you are probably from a European people...

People suggest other songs, I suggest maybe actually FINISHING the ones you watch, especially Sabaton that mostly has info at the end of theirs. Anyway, the very Least you can do when you're just ripping other peoples content is to also show their credits or it really is like just ripping off others

I don’t like comparing the awful things that occur in war, but WWI makes WWII seem minuscule all for a cause that wasn’t worth dying for because it didn’t stop anything, all those lives lost went in vain.
