========= Angels Calling LYRICS ==========
Sent to kill, to watch no man’s land
Snipers are moving unseen
Fight for land, to lose it again
Shrapnel is filling the air
Hell on earth, the trenches mean death, better keep your head down low
Charge their lines, the ultimate test it’s a synchronized sacrifice
Get the wounded after dark
Left alone in no man’s land
Maddening chaos at the front
Dream of heaven
Angels are calling your name
Shells and guns, a rifle and scope
Bullets are wearing your name
Losing track of time and of space
Midnight at sanity’s edge
Losing friends to artillery shells, at the break of dawn
Break their will, as yours has been broken, they’re here alone, dream of home
Charge at dawn to gain a yard
Scout at night to guard their lines
Leave your life in fortune’s hand
When the bullet hits its mark
Know your time in hell has been served
You won’t return to home

Wouldn't say it marked the start of trench warfare, definitely was the war which used it the most but for example in the American Civil War, in some areas they had proto WW1 style trench Warfare, especially during the overland campaign.

@@kousand9917trenches were dug for battles, but it was never the true method of war (doctrine of war) until the Great War. The Great War radically changed the entire landscape of how war worked. Gone were the days of wandering armies that would fight pitched battles, now there were true frontlines that extended the full length of the territory at war. It’s this distinction that makes the Great War the turning point in combat. The birth and death of true trench warfare, then the birth of mechanised warfare. WW2 developed mechanised warfare even further, but ushered in the era of combined arms. This was the status who for decades, but recently there is the renaissance of trench warfare and rise drone warfare.

The part that always sends a chill down my spine is the line "Losing friends to artillery shells at the break of dawn". It really drives home how suddenly and pointlessly someone you've known and loved all your life is whisked away without ever getting a dramatic send off or a heroic sacrifice like in the movies. Really makes me thankful for not having been born in that era.

It's no wonder that World War I was the point where what we now call PTSD really became more widely known to the public at large. Prior to WWI, the pattern of warfare most often consisted of a handful of day-long battles in a campaign season, with weeks or months between each. Maybe some sieges, but those still mostly followed the pattern of brief periods of intense combat with long lower-intensity stretches in between. WWI, though, was months and years of soldiers being *constantly* in combat. Soldiers in those trenches essentially *lived* on the front lines 24/7, where an attack could be ordered or an enemy attack show up at any time, where a sniper bullet or an artillery shell could strike at any moment. In those circumstances, enduring the stresses and horrors constantly and with few opportunities to escape from them, it's no wonder that soldiers in WWI suffered from PTSD to degrees and frequencies that the world had never seen previously.

YES! I love these great war songs! The original world war was one of, if not the most vicious and brutal war in history, especially given what was seen up to that moment. The world literally had never seen anything like it before, in the most literal sense you can imagine. Hell is mud and barbed wire, and the screams of the damned are drowned by the thundering cacophany of death. Keep up the good work, Sabaton
