Back in 1991 when the album 1916 was released Lemmy and Motörhead shocked us all. The title track that ended the LP version was completely different from what Motörhead had been up to that point. The song 1916 is a masterpiece written by Lemmy. This tribute and cover is a great homage. Metal will never die even if old heroes pass on. RIP Lemmy, Philty and Würzel.

I'm still crying every time I watch this! [I hope you'll forgive a pasted comment for once, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw them perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

Here in Sweden we have many programs for vocational students in secondary school (age :16-19) The students making the trench was studying in the construction workers program. If you think closely about it, Sabaton does not glorify war, they love the brotherhood of soldiers and wants us to remember them. Many times they show bravery and even grace under hard pressure. To remain sane and keep your humanity under fire and stand united shoulder to shoulder like brothers...and does we even remember them? we can all learn from that.

Well done Lemmy for recognizing the sacrifice, Sabaton for reviving a song that might have been forgotten and doing a beautiful job of it, and most importantly to those that gave all. Hi Sharlene, Hi Harry, this Sabaton cover follows me since the release. What a great cover and tribute. I first heard 1916 by Motörhead a few weeks before this release on a German rock radio and I was impressed. Never thought Motörhead wrote such a great song back in 1991. And now Sabaton delivered this absolutely masterpiece as a trubite to Lemmy and Motörhead and to all soldiers of different ages. Heard this song more than 30 times now and it hits every time. The brilliant way of telling stories about what happened in the past and teaching history makes them my favourite band for years. No wonder that I have a lot of Sabaton patches and soon Motörhead patches on my battle vest. Sabaton made a powerful tribute to Motörhead and their great song 1916. They did more than just a tribute to Motörhead but a tribute to all fallen soldiers in history. All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark alley is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly... >> Did you know that Sabaton received the "Enlightener of the Year Award 2022"? Sabaton is the "FIRST EVER ROCK BAND to receive this prestigious accolade!!" Greetings from Germany

During the same time Recruiting offices ignored the age limit and allowed to go to war. One of these underaged soldiers was Sidney Lewis, who fought at the Battle of the Somme Aged 12. This whole episode in UK history. The war was sold us a honorable duty that make men out of boys, so friends joined together and many indeed lied about their age to get in. And the recruiters were paid commissions, so they encouraged this behavior. And then there was the white feather campaign where young women would hand white feathers - a sign of cowardice - to men of fighting age they saw on streets. So people were essentially bullied into joining, and when it's the women of your age questioning your manhood, it's a really powerful tool. And the end result was that many towns lost all their men of certain age. I'm assuming some of the women doing the bullying might have had some regrets later on, but ultimately is was the imperial government screwing everyone over.

I cried to this song not only the first time I listened to it... Regarding the 6 miles of ground: Sabaton has another song about it. Price of a mile. "6 miles of ground has been won, half a million man are gone" They have so many powerful songs, some of them are already mentioned by others. Here are two more: Hearts of Iron (about the German commander Wenk who did his best to save civilians and beaten soldiers by enabling them to surrender to the USA instead of the SovietUnion) Cliffs of Gallipoli (about the botched invasion of Gallipoli in WW1) The great thing about Sabaton is that they know no nation - they do not glorify one nation or condem another. They sing about the war and all it's horror. The war and how it brings out the best in some people - and the worst in others.

When you said "I don't know if I'm allowed to say it per guidelines... but I don't think it was worth it." You hit it on the head, that's what Sabaton has relayed through their songs. Yeah, deeds done are historic, but is a life really worth proving how much better something is? How much farther you can go by letting others die for your ideals, those who would normally never do that? War sucks, its horrific and gruesome- but yet inevitable. Anyways, this song breaks me every time I hear it, and I am glad Sabaton covered it, cause I don't think any other band would have done it justice like they did.

This is why I collect military firearms. To hold something someone my age used to not only take life but protect theirs. We (those who do this collecting) always say "Imagine if our guns could talk and the stories they would tell"

I am a platoon commander in the Finnish Army. And in the training they taught us the loss/mission ratio. Which is the hardest decision that a leader can ever make. You have 30-50 young men in front of you. You have a mission to complete, but you know that 10-20 of these young men will never see tomorrow. Is it worth the risk? You know roughly the mission and how much enemies you may face, but eventually there will be casualties on your side as well. How do you decide that kind of thing? It is made for a greater good. If this mission is not completed and these 10 men don't die, maybe 100 more will die tomorrow because we couldn't complete the mission. But they are your men. You sleep with them in the tents, you talk with them, you get to know them and be friends with them. Then you have to decide that "Yes, I'm taking 10 of my friends to their death because of an order I got from my commanding officer..." Hopefully this never happens. But if shit hits the fan, it will be the hardest decision I've ever made in my life...

As a combat veteran. In the Military. The mission is priority. If it wasn't you wouldn't accept it because of the chance for loss of life. It's a hard pill to swallow as a leader. A hard pill.

Do yourself a favour and listen to the original with Motorhead too. And about the price, Sabaton have made a song about that too: "What's the price of a mile"

Fighting in a war must be one of the worst things that can happen to a human being.... This band pays great homage to these events... To the soldiers who fight on a war front and many die....😔, I love their music.... And their videos are always great productions.....👌

I'm going to say that is NOT a controversial opinion at all.... the cost is NEVER worth it, that's kind of the point of this song. They were highlighting the sheer stupidity of the whole thing. It's why I love videos/songs like this, they don't sugar coat anything, you get the cold hard reality of war and get reminded about why we should do everything we can to avoid it!

Yes, Joakim's voice only gets better as he gets older. He is 42 now, still just a young boy. Sadly Harry, some warmongers think it is an acceptable price to pay for such a small piece of territory. / B.

I am always good until that 3rd verse. Lemmy killed our emotions by bringing our mothers into it. The line about "But she never came though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame' gives me chills every time.

The original 1916 is possibly the most powerful anti-war song I've heard and Sabaton did do it justice. And contrast between 1916 and Motörhead's usual style is stark.

My first contact with Sabaton, i don´t like them. Their outfit, a tank on stage and so on. I thought they glorify war. Later I realized their history lessons. There are so much stories i wouldn´t know and so much research i do. Just because of Sabaton. They are so important for a greater kind of understanding ...... and their music is great! Greetings from Germany
