You'd never guess it. It's pronounced Sha-bond-ee. That punch in the anime is exquisite. Also Luffy broken beating his head against the ground all alone in the anime makes me cry everytime. The Japanese voice actress imbues him with so much emotion.

While I can't help with the Archipelago part, when it comes to Sabaody, the second a is mostly silent. Also... seeing as you love the heck out of the Supernova... you wanna know what's nuts? Oda came up with them at the last second. Also-also: The Celestial Dragons/World Nobles? Yeah, they don't rule the island... they're more or less the aristocrats of the entire world... and yeah, they... they're p bad. Btw, I hope you're not skipping the Cover Serials, because whooooo boy will you miss some important deets. Like how Hachi's not in jail.

I swear to God, Nami gets so much unwarranted hate from the fandom. She may be money hungry, but are they forgetting the fact that she is always willing to give away her money when it comes to her loved ones. She was the one who comforted Usopp when he lost the 200 Million, she was the one ready to sacrifice all the money they got from TB for Caimie, etc etc. And besides, the main reason why she was enslaved and her people were killed in the first place was because she did not have money. Of course, things are different for her now but trauma like that doesn't go away easily, obviously she would be very fickle about money.

Some people criticize One Piece for not having enough character death, but this arc emphasizes how that isn’t always necessary to create drama. You aren’t beaten in One Piece when you die; you’re beaten when your ideals are broken. We’ve seen Luffy lose before but here, groveling in the dirt in front of Kuma, is the first time we’ve seen him truly beaten.

Very true. In one of the early q&a sections in the manga, someone asks why Luffy never kills his enemies and Oda's reply is basically that in the world of One Piece, everyone lives by their dreams, so if you are defeated and have to give up on your dream, that may as well be death.

Doesn't make it any better, though. Recently I think Oda has been playing with the audience's expectation of fake out deaths to get big emotional payoffs (that haven't happened yet so I could be wrong), so at least if that's the case it will have come to something in the end.

One thing I really liked about Saobady is that the outcome doesn't come out of nowhere. Gecko Moria from Thriller Bark told the crew that they weren't strong enough, that they wouldn't be able to handle the New World. And usually that kind of talk is taken as just regular throw-away antagonistic lines meant to get the last laugh But Moria was absolutely right; the crew didn't even make it to the New World, they got stopped at the entrance. Thriller bark gets way more significant the further on into the story you read. For example in thriller bark Moria warned luffy that he’d lose his crew if he went to the new world and it was very different from the 1st half of the grand line. And what happens in the next arc?luffy loses his crew. And there’s wayyyy more important links and ties from thriller bark to the story later on down the line.Moria’s dialogue is a lot more significant than you may initially think

Fun fact, Oda created the Supernovas in a single day while brainstorming for the chapter they were introduced in. They went from not even being a concept to nine fully designed characters each with a distinct personality and history in a day, and were on the page and sent off for publication within a week of their conception. Despite this off the cuff creation pretty much the whole group became instant fan favorites and they will be significant characters going forward.

That arc is packed full of foreshadowing and setup for things right up to present day, and it works a lot better the second time (aside from the Absalom stuff and Sanji's character assassination) A great example of this is Moria, and his warning to Luffy. Oda called his shot here like Babe Ruth, and had had Moria straight up tell us _to our faces_ what was gonna happen to the crew in Sabaody. But the reader doesn't take him seriously because "he's just this bitter, washed-up joke of a pirate, what does he know? Luffy can friendship punch his way through anything!" One arc later: 😭😭😭

He first reels you in with this sense of wonder by showing you the bubbles and environment, just so he can snuff it out by revealing the dark underbelly that lies below the surface. If I remember correctly the main reason Kidd has a higher bounty than Luffy at this point in the story is because he is more violent and cruel towards civilians/more civilian casualties when his crew engages in conflict and not necessarily because him or his crew are stronger than Lufffy and the Strawhats.

Bounties are rarely based on power just in general. Power can be a factor but it's not usually the biggest factor and sometimes it doesn't even play a role (childhood Robin for instance). Bounties are mostly about how big of a problem or threat the World Government considers a person/crew to be. From what I recall I think you're right about why Kidd's bounty is higher. But I think it's arguable whether that should be enough. Luffy had been taking down Warlords, led a successful assault against one of the Government's most important bases, literally declaring war on them while doing it, and destroyed the blueprints for one of the ancient super weapons they'd spent years trying to obtain. Oh and he's wearing Shanks' hat (they may not know that though). Kidd would've had to cause some major destruction to make up for that I think. Which is totally possible, don't get me wrong.

  • @FuckYoutubeAndGoogle

@@ansalem12 While that is technically true, bounties are actually a pretty good gauge of power as well. @@FuckKZreadAndGoogle And Chopper, Usopp, Zoro, Sanji, Kuma, Moria, pre-war Blackbeard, arguably some of the other Strawhats. There are lots, some more debatable than others. I'm not saying bounties aren't a useful gauge at all, I'm just saying there's a high margin of error. It's fine for setting expectations and I use it for that too. The reason I pointed it out is because Kidd's vs Luffy's bounties aren't set based on the same criteria. My main point was that there's no set rules for what determines bounties, otherwise Luffy's bounty should've been higher than Kidd's and probably by a lot. Bounties don't necessarily say anything at all about a person on any scale. They don't tell you who the government sees as more of a threat, either. Bounties are primarily set by whim. Well, really they're set based on what Oda thinks will have the best story impact. Kidd's bounty was higher than Luffy's so Luffy wouldn't have the highest bounty in Sabaody, matching the theme of the arc. That's the only consistent scale.

About the factions. Luffy is the "good pirate" (he's our protagonist), but there are horrible pirates like crocodile. On the other side, there are good marines (Coby, Garp, Aokiji to some extent), and there are bad marines (Helmeppo's father, the rat guy in Nami's hometown). The characters are believable because their moral compass does not depend on the side they play. Some characters, like Aokiji, even struggle to align his morals to his actions and his duty.

Enel = Eminem, Franky = Ace Ventura, Jango = Michael Jackson and all the Navy admirals are old school Japanese actors. Of the ones you've been introduced to so far, Kizaru (Light guy) is based on Kunie Tanaka and Aokiji (Ice guy) is based on Yusaku Matsuda. Also, while their designs aren't, many of the Supernovas are based in character at least on real and/or fictional criminals and pirates; the most obvious being Capone Bege. Basil Hawkins name comes from the John Hawkins of Treasure Island and a real life pirate by the name of Basil Ringrose, Jewelry Bonney is a reference to the Irish pirate Anne Bonney, X Drake's name is a reference to a privateer by the name of Sir Francis Drake, and Eustace Kidd is a combination of two real pirates named Eustace the Monk and William "Captain" Kidd. Fun/Insane fact about the Supernovas though, they were not part of Oda's original plan for the story. They were actually designed from scratch only a week or two before the chapter in which they were introduced because Oda felt that the Sabaody arc didn't have enough interesting characters. This man just decides he's going to print gold and then by god he goes and prints gold.

What I loved about this arc is Zoro and Sanjis dynamic , ever since the beginning of the story they have had a hatred for eachother in a way ( a brotherly rivalry ) but here , Sanji knows how Injured Zoro is and constantly is looking out for him , he even made Franky look after nami ( something he would never normally do since he thinks it’s his job to protect the women ) and he ran to try and save Zoro. It’s just so clear that these two sure are bitter towards , but at the end of the day they will protect eachother. There dynamic is easily my favourite in the series.

What's crazy about Rayleigh's introduction here is this isn't the first time we've see him in the story. Go back to chapter 19 and he makes an appearance in buggy's flashback. They even call him by his name! Edit: turns out I was wrong about them using his name, my bad y'all, please don't kick me out daniel

Favorite part of this arc, when Luffy knows that he's deep in the poo-poo, his reaction isn't, "come on guys, power of friendship and we can win," it's to run. Running is the safest thing to do and that's what he does.

this arc was what shounen now a days needs...most shounens never have the balls to deconstruct its main character's entire core and goals and power and the show's plot like oda did this late into it..he finally has his crew and he loses them all?.hes helped so many but now he gets it all taken from him and is broken?..losing them hurts him more then anything hes been through?..interesting oda......its so good..we see luffy's choices as right as they were and right hearted they still caused some issues and while it may work out it changed the story forever...a single punch...its insane...it was not expected..it changed the direction of the series..sure we had ace's capture in the background as a future rescure arc in our minds but we never thought luffy would go alone without his crew around or they would not be around during that choice when he finds out where he is and says he wants to go....that blew our minds...the crew was ready to go save him and he said no...so this caught us off guard..we thought sabaody was going to be a fun little worldbuilding side romp with info dumps and new characters and slavery stuff and hachin and rayleigh and supernovas maybe a fight with an admiral and warlord..the way it ends was a shock though...for sure
