I had an updated version of this video ready to go and I just forgot to replace this version with it damn it. I added a section where I commented on how well this arc reminded us how powerful Luffy is while also giving him challenges. Which was NEEDED after the last arc. Another great balance of OP!

We know he acknowledges and finds women beautiful because all the way back in Loguetown, he called Alvida - "beautiful". This arc shows how his priority is different than women or girls.

@PRIJITH PJ Oda explained in a SBS that when he's with Ussop, he tends to get more "like a schoolboy" if I remember correctly. So he was influenced by Ussop.

9:54 you got it exactly right here lol. One time Oda was asked why there wasn’t more romance in one piece and he said it was because “all the strawhats are already in love with adventure.”

1. Kuma sent them flying for 3 days 2. Boa's Devil Fruit is based on lust or love towards her. The Vice-Admiral Momonga stabbed his hand to distract himself with pain. Luffy is pure-hearted so it doesn't work on him. Also, when it was first used, he got distracted by the thought that it was Foxy's Noro Noro beam.

Oda has already confirmed that Luffy has the tendencies of a normal boy already. Hence why he reacted to Nami. So Luffy being pure-hearted seems to be an ill founded assumption made by the fandom. I think Luffy wasn’t affected by Hancock simply because he didn’t care to lust after her.

@@Sebster85 Not entirely true. Oda was asked why he reacted like this toward Nami and Oda said it's because he's hanging around Usopp. He devolves into more childish behaviour when they're together. You can say the same thing for Chopper because he reacted the same way too but in Thriller Bark, he said he's not attracted to humans.

It's not that he's pure hearted it's just he simply doesn't have any lust or desire for Boa. As stated, Oda retconned the whole thing with Nami as being an influence from Usopp, but even if he didn't it can easily be explained as "he appreciates Nami's beauty as a member of his crew where Boa is not and therefore he has no intrest" but again, that's only a possible theory if you choose to ignore Oda's retcon in the SBS

The snakes are important because they allow the kingdom to survive. They couldn't leave or approach Amazon Lily without the snakes on Boa's ship. So it is a sign of respect.

I love those little moments in this arc where Luffy realizes he can’t do something, and remembers a specific crew member! Like when he was hungry and remembered Sanji, when he tried to make a boat and remembered Franky etc This arc is so underrated imo

I feel like the lack of a visually interesting island is explained in-world by amazon lily being in the calm belt and not the grand line

According to the One Piece wiki, Amazon Lily is based on China. It's mentioned in the Rurubu One Piece travel guide book which came out this year where they explain what culture/country inspired which islands.

"Enough to do a decent size review" *is 22 minutes* Yup that's One Piece.

The sunpirate mark reveal is one of those world building moments in One Piece that make me so impressed with Oda. The mark of the sun pirates is a brand to cover up slave markings. Which we've already seen on Hachi, and he isn't the only one. I never would have asked for context on the Arlong Pirates. We know that the Straw Hats want to go to fishman island. Way to build my anticipation Oda. You have me hooked for what we will see down there.

@@DanielGreeneReviews The real question is what would the characters’ backstories be? They all live on an isolated island in a near perfect society. The only real important life events would come from Boa and her pirate crew, the rest live almost identical lives.

Boa's powers work through attraction. If you're attracted to her, she can turn you to stone. That's why that Navy Captain stabbed himself - he used the pain as a distraction to block out all other impulses his body might have had. Luffy, however, isn't sexually attracted to Boa at all. He's immune to her charm - and, as a result of that, he's also immune to her powers. For once, it's not because he's a rubber man, but simply because he's Luffy. That's why Boa took a shine to him too - he's the first guy to treat her as just another person, without any ulterior motives whatsoever.

It's not that simple or direct, besides , you can bypass it with distractions and willpower , both of which Luffy excels at

I do not think Amazon Lily should have been longer. I think the arc did everything it needed to do to move the plot forward in a logical and interesting way without overstaying its welcome. Also I think the side-characters not being as memorable or fleshed out can be excused by the fact that this arc was very short. I think it was the right choice to mainly focus on Boa since she is the most relevant character that will also play a role further down the line.

Maguerite, the Gorgon Sisters, and old lady Empress are the only memorable characters (AND THE BIG CAT!!!). Most other arcs have substantially more (save for Orange Town and RD). There was def more that could’ve been learned and more characters that could’ve had a personality to them. Most of the side characters had the same personalities. I don’t need character development in that sense, I just want characters to be more fleshed out or spend a bit of time with them so we see their personality

@@papaofthejohns5882 but you wrote off the characters as if they need something extra to be relevant/cool in an isolated island. They can just have a fun personality type (old lady empress or Sandersonia). They can have a quirk about them. Like 75% of the people we met were the same character. Surprised at men, in love with Boa, ready to kill Luffy, party at the end.

Something that should be mentioned, Luffy isn’t reuniting with the crew to save Ace, he’s saving Ace INSTEAD of reuniting with his crew. I believe this has been mentioned in this arc.

@@moerko94 In one of his AMAs, he talks about how all of his videos are completely unscripted and in the moment. I really don't blame him for sometimes getting ahead of himself and misremembering certain plot details (heck Merphy and Daniel both thought that Luffy knew about Ace being captured back in Thriller Bark and simply shrugged it off). It's why he often cuts in future Daniel to correct himself on something or add more context.

You really nailed the thing with the side characters here. I never really noticed why, just that I never really found this arc so super interesting, but I think it's definitely because the side-characters just... aren't as characterístic as they usually are. I... am pretty sure it was mentioned that he flew through space for 3 days before he landed. Also, her power works through, uhm, something like people being infatuated with her creates gaps in their heart or something-something, philosophy-something. Point is, the reason Luffy isn't turned to stone is because he's not infatuated. The reaosn the commander managed not to be turned to stone was because he literally stabbed his own hand to overwhelm his mind with the pain instead of Boa's beauty.

its a short arc so oda wanted us to get to boa and impel down and he kinda wanted this arc to be about making us love luffy again now that he failed and is all alon aka not the random females he meets before boa for a few chapters..thats not the intent of oda at all this arc...those girls are not that interesting cause they live isolated..it makes sense

People often attack this, but remember Oda draws weekly and often, especially in later chapters he draws a lot of characters at any given time, for the sake of meeting deadlines his designs have to be somewhat simple and easily replicable for multiple panels

An interesting thing to note, when publishing manga to Weeekly Shonen Jump, readers send in their votes and that helps decide their place(sometimes existence) in the magazine. So most pacing, length of the arcs, and moments in chapters were influenced by Oda keeping his reader engagement high. The fact he’s balanced the highly competitive manga industry influence and excellent world building and storytelling is amazing.

Why did the mushroom bit make me laugh? I knew it was coming and it still made me laugh. El duende strikes again with a hilarious, short, poignant review. Also, you don't get enough points for your Sabaody review. Keep up the good work, Daniel. Give us more rants.

17:40 Boa didn’t “make” this culture. The culture and people were already there. She got caught by World Nobles when she was younger when she was out pirating as a kid. She went back to Amazon Lily after she was freed.

Wanted to comment this, thanks 👍🏻 Also want to add, she didn't reached Amazon Lily on her own but with Granny Nyon's help whom they met on Sabaody Archipelago which exists below MarieJoa( from where the slaves were freed). Nyon had left Amazon Lily because of also being affected by the disease of Lovesickness. If we would want someone's backstory it could be her's and not other nice but pretty much insignificant side-characters', at least not at this moment in the story.

Luffy wanted meat over hancock, of course he has his priorities straight.

this is a fair review. I've just learned that these awkward mini-arcs are kinda necessary cuz the lows make the highs hit harder. the reason why I'm not as critical is because I appreciate these setup arcs and accept the shift in quality when we're in setup mode.

Same, on their own, they are not the best, but they help change the stakes and give us a breather. In the entire context of the story i do enjoy that.

I'd have to go back and look again, but I do believe Luffy finally makes the decision to go save Ace because until the old woman shows him the article in the paper, Luffy wasn't aware that Ace was to be executed, only that he was in trouble of some unknown kind. So up to that point he just assumed he had a big fight or something to that effect. Now knowing that his execution looms, he puts finding the crew on hold and asks Boa to go help him rescue his Brother.

So....Amazon Lily is his longest OP review after Water 7 Saga. Didn't expect that lol.

I think you misunderstood why Luffy isn't affected by Boa's power. Her power relies on you having a desire for her, Luffy doesn't so it doesn't work on him. It only didn't work on VA Momonga because he stabbed himself in the hand to distract himself.

Exactly, for me when i see a "critic" like that i think it's shows how much the reviewer expects from oda, the girls are just chilling there, they are not even from the pirate team, how come they will have a lot going on for them.

Luffy is the most emotional intellegent character in One piece. I first realized this when he refused to give up on Robin even when she begged him to. Or refused to leave namis island when she tried to get him to leave. He just aleays knows whats important and whats under a persons subtext.

Just in case you forgot. The Grand Line has a border and it's called the "Calm Belt". This region of the sea is why every pirate needs to enter through reverse mountain because the calm belt has no waves and wind so sailing there is near impossible. It also houses TONs of sea kings which is dreadful. Amazon Lily is the first island we see that is in the calm belt. The only reason why Boa's pirate ship could sail through this is because it was being pulled by the two giant sea serpent you see at the front of her ship. They say that these serpents are terrifying even for the other sea kings so they wouldnt even bother attacking. As for the Vice Admiral's ship, it's one of the marines' most recent work. They made a device that scares off sea kings and that it also allows them to travel through the calm belt.

Something that is great about Boa falling for Luffy is "why?", SO lets think about what kind of men Boa have met on her life: 1) Abusive assholes (celestial dragons) 2) simps lords (everybody) And then is Luffy, the dude that literally Say "your actitud is discusting", and have not hesitation to leave everything if that help those who save him. It literally became Unique for her.

About the "conquerors spirit" if you remember we already saw shanks pull off something similar when he met whitebeard and some of whitebeard's crew started collapsing one by one

Now that you've seen Conqueror's Haki named and used by Luffy to knock people out its time to reread One Piece and look for other instances where a character looks at someone and they fall over unconscious. The biggest display of this was when Shanks went to see Whitebeard and all the weaker members of the crew passed out as Shanks walked by them.

"Two of Boa's friends". Those are Boa Hancock's sisters. All of them have the surname of "Boa". Hancock is the Pirate Empress's given name (most One Piece characters with full names are said in the order that fits Japanese people's names: the "last name" goes first). You will notice this when Luffy frequently refers to the Empress as "Hancock."

Soo, it's implied that Amazon Lily as a society has been around for hundreds of years, and the Boa sisters were from the island and were traveling, doing their adventure when they were captured and enslaved to serve the world nobles where they were forcefeed their devil fruits and were freed by Fish Tiger ( the liberator of all slaves), and when they came back Boa Hancock was the strongest member of the island, hence the new Queen

Never saw “One Piece,” but watching cuz I just love Daniel’s personality, how he frames his videos, his humor, and wit, and he’s cute. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Yeah the anime is a meh for me. It'll take months for you to catch up while in the manga it's much faster. The anime is better now tho in terms of animation (altho they still add some unnecessary filler scenes)

When you talked about when Boa's backstory gets revealed and how her powers were forced upon her, it actually is more closely related to the original stories of Medusa and petrification from Ancient Greece than you realised. In the older stories and myths of Medusa she was originally a beautiful woman, but because she was so beautiful she caught the eye of the greek god Poseidon who chased her into a temple of Athena and r**ed her. Then Athena who was angry that her temple was desecrated cursed her to be the snake-haired turn to stone Medusa monster. So Boa's story with her being forced to have a petrifying power and taken as a slave by nobility because of her beauty has very direct parallels to the origins of Medusa.

Actually Medusa as a formerly beautiful woman who got cursed by Athena to be ugly is not the original version. Originally Medusa was always a monster and the more popular Medusa as a victim version was written later by a roman poet.

It matches that version of the myth, but that is not the original nor 'older' story of Medusa's origin. The original version is her and her sisters were just the children of two of the Titans who just happened to be snakey monsters who could turn people to stone. The whole 'Punished by Athena for having the gall to be sexually assaulted in her temple' came MUCH later from Ovid who is extremely not even close to any sort of 'original source' for anything Greek Mythology related (the core of the Greek myths that we know come from about 1000 BC or so, Ovid was not Greek, but Roman, and came along about a millennia later.) Ovid was pissy about getting exiled from Rome for being a public nuisance by doing such minor things as trying to marry his own sister, constantly defacing public monuments with diatribes demanding Rome have more pubic orgies, and banging one of the Emperors daughters (or maybe sisters one or the other), and so wrote a bunch of Greek Myth fanfiction where he made the gods his stand ins for the authorities in Rome while painting them as stupid, arrogant, unfair doo-doo heads. Pretty much any "Greek Myth" were the gods are being even bigger jackasses then normal and human gets turned into something as a result (See also the entire Arachne thing) is likely Ovid... other then the ones that are about Zeus just being a horndog of course, you can't really make Zeus a bigger creep then he already was.

Luffy is an intellectual idiot. But at the same time, he's a genius in terms of emotional intelligence. He can read behind people's "masks". He knew Robin was a good person without actually knowing her. He knew that Nami had to ask him for help. And here, he understands that the "thing in their backs" is not something that should be addressed just because they are fighting.

Something really interesting about Luffy that Oda said in an SBS is that Luffy can notice physical beauty but to him, it is a categorical description rather than any kind of compliment or insult. Another interesting thing is that Oda also said the reason Luffy reacted to seeing Nami naked was that Usopp was there, and when head Luffy are together, Luffy switched to naughty kid on vacation mode. This giving him said reactions without changing how little he cares for physical attractiveness.

As someone who has read beyond you I find myself taking deep breaths fighting the urge to say something later and say to myself, "Let him have the ride." I'm so happy with how much you're enjoying the series.

“Oda draws a lot of busty women” There is an interesting story here. Nothing to absolve Oda of any criticism, more an anecdote that speaks to the larger industry and the problems therein. Before one piece, Oda had worked as an assistant for Nobuhiro Watsuki on Ruroni Kenshin (which side note fuck that dude) and was working on several one shots to improve his skills before going all out on his dream project that would be one piece. During this period, he worked on several drafts on what would become one piece and the staff at ruroni kenshin, namely watsuki’s editor told Oda that quote “his girls weren’t cute enough.” This led Oda to specifically trying to hone his skill in making “””sexy women.””” I think this speaks volumes of the industry then and the affects it still has now; that a major criticism to the young author was honed in on whether or not his designs were horny enough.

Idk man i am pretty sure there is some truth to that but still comes off as an excuse. I think oda just likes busty females and excuses it by saying this is a shounen manga so i am trying to appeal to that demographic but he doesn't care that half of his audience is female readers. If this was only about editor forcing or influencing him then why rurouni kenshin itself didn't have these kind of fan servicey female character designs? (Not trying to defend watsuki or anything though he was a terrible person). Or any other shounen without fan service like AoT, FMA, gintama, d gray man, HxH etc. how do you explain those?

@@ab-hx2ii "Half of his audience is female readers" Are you sure about that? Yes, there are female readers but there are more male readers than female. I have no doubt about it. Look at my siblings, I have four brothers and four sisters. All my brothers read One Piece. But only 2 of my sisters read the manga. Even back in the days, Dragonball manga, back when I was in school, most boys in my class read it. Where as most girls didn't even care. They are more interested on other things like celebrity gossips, etc.

You guys complain about the weirdest stuff. Even IF all the women were busty and lusty women, what's the issue. And that is actually not true. 2) If you want to complain, complain about the entirety of Japanese culture. Because if you read other mangas, the pervertedness is usually there. I am sure the Japanese will give af about your opinion. 3) Who cares if half of his audience is female? The genre doesn't change because women read it too. Have you ever read shoujo manga? The art is usually of sparkly beautiful men. Guess what I do? I don't bitch about it because thats the artistic style of that genre. And yes, I read shoujo or shoujo oriented isekai mangas.

@@ab-hx2ii Why would he need to care about female readers? He is a author of a magazine made for boys, so that's the audience this show is meant to be consumed for, if someone who's out of his demographic complains, he has every right to ignore them.

I love and appreciate these One Piece videos. As someone who wants to watch/read the IP but doesn't want to commit, watching your trusted reviews on the arcs is almost giving me the feeling of getting into One Piece myself. Thank you for your great, greene, goblin work!

the part where Luffy walks in on Boa is considered by many to be evidence that he is asexual, and i think it's really cool/unique to see that represented in a shonen manga protagonist especially coupled with an SBS question where someone pointed out a time where Luffy referred to Alvida as a "beauty" and Oda replied: "He did indeed call Alvida a beauty. However, when normal people say 'a beauty' they mean it as a compliment, but in Luffy's case, it's just a classification. Luffy understands whether a face is pretty or not, but he doesn't care about that."

Just wanted to say I really like your One Piece videos and am glad you are continuing to do them!

Why when a woman falls in love does it immediately turn into: "please don't belittle your character"? Like, you've already seen that OP characters are mostly multi- dimensional in personality and goals. Why when a woman falls in love does it "take away" from her character? It doesn't change how she acts towards others, nor does she rebuke her previously established characterization. Moreso it establishes that she loves luffy's purity, which, with other men, she obviously didn't see while growing up. So, of course when she meets someone like luffy who is not only the opposite of her captors/abusers but also an offender (luffy punched one of them square in the face), HOW COULD SHE NOT BE ENRAPTURED BY HIM and thereto infatuated, it fits perfectly with her character. Re-evaluate urself a bit on that sexism. Besides that, good review. 👍

It's just 10 chapter transition arc. He didn't want to stretch it and develop side characters. Simple amazon island, why everything should be something otherworldly? I really enjoyed simplicity of this arc especially because past and future arcs are heavy. Don't know what is the problem with female characters too, Nami and Robin are amazing

Solid review of this arc! Imo it was a great set up arc and world building piece. I felt Boa's back story was a great piece to tie in with what we learned about the celestial dragons and history of slavery in this world in the previous arc, once again reminding us that while we have this pirate adventure with the Straw Hats at the forefront of the story, Oda's still moving pieces in the background for the story of the larger world. Thanks for this video! Really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next!

amazon lily has always been one of the arcs that i just couldn't get myself to care about and i've never been sure why, but you explained it perfectly! everyone other than boa felt bland compared to the level of character writing we're used to from oda. although, the absence of the rest and of the straw hats leaves a huge gap to be filled and it is meant to be almost a bridge arc, so i can cut it some slack.

Btw having read Malazan before One Piece sorta help me grasp haki/conquers spirit being something similar to whenever Annomander Rake walks into a room and the (magic/will) pressure it puts on weaker mortals.

With regards to odas drawing, hes stated before that he has trouble drawing women's faces, they only ever come out looking nami or granny kokoro(train mermaid) so he tries to focus on bodies so he over designs them to draw your attention away from the face. Not excusing how he draws big tissues on every girl (as far as I know a lot of the fando are bored with it) just trying to contextualize it

Man, loving these vids as a new subscriber. A one piece youtuber tweeted a link to your Sabaody review a couple days ago. Very much looking forward to the reviews of the arcs to come

From what I can recall, Oda himself stated that the reason why there is no romance in the crew is because the Straw Hats are "in love with adventure." This sentiment can definitely be seen here with Luffy being completely oblivious to the ideas of sex and physical attraction when he has other goals in mind.

I wouldn't say he is oblivious, and more like he just doesn't care or find them important enough for his attention.

Hancock's earliest seen design appeared initially on the front cover of a 1999 issue of Shonen Jump and later was reprinted in Color Walk 2. When the Straw Hats entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked by his editing department to draw villains that would appear from then on. He agreed to and drew their backs for the Shonen Jump cover.

A character being a Love-Interest does not mean that their character is "reduced". It's just a role. Like Main Character, Foil, or Deuteragonist etc.

True enough. A love interest, if handled properly, does not have her or his whole world revolve around the person they are attracted to. They are simply attracted to this other person and maybe get romantically involved with the other person down the line. (I mean, we know that Boa is not going to be romantically involved with Luffy, much as she would like to, but still...) That being said, I get what Daniel is saying; he doesn't want Boa to be completely reduced to nothing more than love-stuck girl who only exists as an accessory to make Luffy look good, losing anything she had in the way of agency. A part of me wonders if his time dealing with narrative works that come of as misogynistic, or ARE misogynistic, may have colored his concerns (though Sanji's antics in Thriller Bark probably didn't help matters, and there are definitely some mangakas who have been guilty of taking away character agency once they involve romance), but fortunately, regardless if that is the case or not, the "romance" is really just played up for laughs more than anything, and Boa herself remains untouched.

nice review, i agree with some things, i disagree with others. however there should be a big clarification here. in the review you said that luffy was thinking/ saying we really need to get the crew together so we can go save ace. which is in direct contrast to what actually happened. where luffy wants to get his crew but makes the decision (because there no time ) to not go and get the crew and save ace alone. Its a big character moment of luffy and a big decision for him and if you did understand it, it just didnt come across that way in your review.

Did Daniel really skip the fact that luffy has conquerors haki and the existance of haki at all? I believe this reveal is one of the more important of Amazon Lily and one of its reason of existance, its was short just to introduce this and Boa to be a device to get to luffy to Impel Down to rescue Ace

Literally the first moments of Luffy waking up on Amazon Lily is him realizing that his childhood was abusive and getting high on shrooms to cope.

Amazon Lily was around the time where I started reading on the regular. It's not a bad arc, but it isn't the greatest either. And Boa is, well, Boa. If you don't mind the spoiler, her being smitten with Luffy will stay, but she will have enough character moments of her own that are independent of him.

Couple of things: 1: Boa isn't summoned for a Council or anything. The Warlords are essentially privateers, i.e, they do some jobs for the Marines & World Government, and they're allowed to be legal pirates, and in this case, the Warlords are being summoned to fight in a War against Whitebeard. 2: Boa's ability to turn people to Stone is mainly reliant on them finding her attractive. Luffy doe? He don give a fuck. 3: "Nothing visually interesting ".... You forgetting how there are stone snakes on the large mountain? Like... the city is set in a massive crater/walled section, and atop those walls? Are giant snake-shaped mountains looking out to the island. Also, their ships are pulled by giant sea snakes. 4: The two "friends" are Boa Hancock's sisters, Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold, and they're hurting Luffy using something called "Haki", which is the "Magic" you mentioned. We also saw Marguerite mention this when she shot her arrow back when she first met Luffy. 5: The "Spirit" that Luffy... again, that's Haki... and we actually saw this particular brand back in CH 1... y'know, when Shanks stared down that Sea monster. 6: Re; why sneks are a big deal on AL: There's the stuff I brought up in point 3, but also, we see literally everyone having a Snake with them, a snake that we see transforming into bows and staffs, so clearly, this culture has formed a bit of a symbiosis with the snakes on the island.

Yeah I can confirm the character intro right here is lackluster. It is made up by a new power system introduction, with the destructive bow, with the deflection, and the spirit will you are referring to. Has been enjoying your review so much. Of course One Piece itself has a weaknesses and it feel good when you pointed it out, because when I read it, I can't really pinpoint what exactly was wrong. Thank You Daniel! The primary focus of this arc was to introduce haki more formally as a power in one piece as well as set the stage for the later 2 arcs. Its a serviceable arc for what it lays the table for in the future but much like thriller bark isn't particularly noteworthy by itself This is the great calm before the storm And boy is a storm coming Edit: it is a self aware joke. Oda has gotten many letters over the years talking about human anatomy in one piece, some of which he has answered in public response catalogs called SBS volumes I believe and more often than not his response tends to be along the lines of "well, this is a comic written for a primary demographic of young boys" or a response that you might hear if you asked a similar question about an adult joke on a kids cartoon.

Has he realised that all of arlongs crew had the marks yet?

so the side characters not being developed was because, all of Amazon Lily IS an accesory of Boa, SHE WAS the actual focused character, think of it like how with Vivi we had the guardians Pell and Chaka, they arent developed, but serve to further develop both Vivi and her father Cobra
