The ghazal "Go sab ko baham saghar-o-bada to nahin tha" encapsulates his approach vividly. In its opening couplet, he astutely observes that the prevailing melancholy can not be attributed solely to the prohibition of liquor. Even in the era of its unrestricted availability, not all indulged. The enjoyment of a drink was confined to a select few. Thus, the pervasive despondency in the city must stem from some sinister roots.
The succeeding couplet further accentuates this reality. It highlights that previously, only a handful exhibited visible signs of mental distress, identifiable by their tattered garments. However, today, such scruffy attire seems ubiquitous. Consequently, what emerges is a collective experience of distress, erasing distinctions, and unifying people in shared adversity.
The third couplet reveals a unique viewpoint. Faiz Sahib reminisces about a period when his social circle comprised both religious preachers and heavy drinkers. Surprisingly, there was not much difference between the two. Both are humans and shared common hopes, challenges, and moments of happiness. He suggests that the human race has to transcend apparent differences.
In the final couplet, he says that we took a nap induced by the weariness of a prolonged journey. However, our intention wasn't just to remain in this state indefinitely, and never to awaken. It signifies a collective complacency, where individuals settle for the status quo rather than endeavouring for improvement or innovation.
