S300SX Turbo Shaft Play, How Much Is Too Much?

In this video I cover a quick and easy method of checking your journal bearing S200/300/400 series Turbochargers radial end play. Hope this helps you guys determine if your turbocharger has "too much play!" While not a 100% positive test, this is a proven way for the average guy to get an idea of the condition of their turbo. Enjoy!

Here I am rebuilding the turbo you built for my skyline back in 2016. That bad boy lasted me 6 years nothing but abuse. Bearings were still fine, just starting pushing a little oil out the exhaust side.

For axial, I get 9/100 tics on my .001" dial indicator. So I assume that is 0.009". Workshop manual says 0.0035 limit.

Yes, you have thrust bearing wear or possible incorrect parts if it has been rebuilt at some point. The data you have on axial limit is correct. -Reed

What kind of shaft to bearing n bearing to housing clearance is considered tolerance? I got 0.0032" and 0.0045" off my low miles SXE with bore gage n mics.

bearing housing ID should be 0.7555-0.7559, shaft OD should be 0.4550-0.4555, Journal bearing OD should be .7515-.7520 for a nominal clearance of .0035-.0044. The Journal ID should be between 0.4590-0.4585 for a nominal clearance of .0035-.0030". It is normal to see the OD have a bit more clearance to allow for bearing speed control due to a larger surface area interacting between the oil film and surfaces. I target the tight side of all specifications on rebuilds/new blueprint builds unless it is going in a daily driven application where it will be subjected to higher oil viscosity/lower temperature environments, then I will either supplement a grooved bearing OD or blueprint the build at the loose end of the specification. High viscosity oil is defined as 15-40 or 20w50, temperatures regularly below 32°F - While you did not ask, nominal thrust clearance is going to be .003-.004, same rules followed for oil/temp!- Reed

If i have in and out play what i need to change ? Bearings ? Thanks

You will need to replace the thrust bearing, thrust collar and the remainder of the consumable parts. You will also need to check the side clearance of the seal ring in turbine shaft, excessive thrust motion can cause wear in this area. The assembly will need to be balanced as well. We can provide a professional rebuild of your unit if you need help. Reed

I have side to side play and when i spin the turbine wheel it touches the exhaust outlet, is that the problem?

  • @workturbo

Yes sir. Most likely you have wear in the bearing structure allowing excessive motion and subsequent wheel contact. But also be sure that the turbine housing is installed correctly and is free from any debris in the mounting flange areas...if the housing is not installed perfectly, wheel contact can occur.

I have a s200, i can feel the in and outplay a little and i can hear it a little bit, but i cant really see it, side to side play is like yours, is it a broken turbo or is that ok?

The "in and out" or "axial" motion should fall between .003-.004", any more than that and the thrust bearing has suffered some trauma. I am going to do a video on that subject Thursday! Let me know if you get any questions, I will be happy to help!
