I wish more people understood correlation vs causation. Even if that champagne study was using people and not rats, that wouldn't prove anything about champagne's health benefits. It could only be proving that people who drink champagne more often are wealthier and have better access to healthcare. Science gives us a spectrum of answers ranging in probability from raw correlation at the bottom rung all the way to repeatedly and comprehensively verified theory.

That's why science uses experimentation and not just observation. An observation study can only determine correlation; a properly controlled experiment can imply a cause and effect relationship. What most people don't want to understand is that scientific conclusions are probability statements based on sample sizes, replication frequency, and measurement precision. If you see or hear about the result of a scientific study, and it doesn't include information about sample size, margin of error, or confidence level - it is worthless, meaningless, and you would be better informed if you didn't learn about it.

Actually looking for causation is too inconvenient. Most people don't want to spend money and time on it when the results aren't guaranteed. They'd rather mislead laypeople by giving them the false instant gratification of correlations and make bank on less effort.

Unsolicited advice based on my personal experience as an Epileptic: During your next apointment with your primary care doctor, ask them to refer you to an Epileptologist (basically they're neurologists that specifically focus on treating seizure disorders and go through extra training). If you can, ask for one who is younger and/or associated with a well-known university. There is still a ton that we don't know about the human brain and younger doctors tend to be more open minded and havent had their curiosity and optimism beaten out of them by life yet. If you can't, then keep an eye out for the psychogenic diagnosis. While it can be a legitimate diagnosis a lot of doctors will use it as a catch-all.

As someone who actually reads the studies that these headlines are based on, it is astounding how many people misinterpret them or literally read nothing but the headline before accepting it as fact; not even the abstract or the conclusion. I read that about 90% of people are passive consumers of media (they don't comment, "like," etc.). I feel like maybe even more than 90% of people don't click on the source link and read the study.

A lot of pilot studies are also produced by Ph.D. students trying to write their dissertation. Principal Investigators really just mentor nowadays and only have time for research in their spare time. The students get zero sleep between school, research, a personal life, and many have a secondary job, so they live on coffee, and thus desire to feed it to mice so that they know ahead of time if it's slowly killing them 😅

Recap: 11 episodes, several of which mentioned Egypt's Sisi, Turkiye's Erdogan, the European migrant crisis (largely caused by Assad and Putin's treatment of Syrians), Philipino's Duterte, North Korea, but never another word about Assad or Syria unlike the first two seasons. Incredible. It's like all media systematically wiped it off the zeitgeist. Its not that I feel like Syria is owed some special coverage but the drop off in attention is heartbreaking considering how desperate syrians were to be heard at this crucial point in the conflict. Also, I can't stress enough how bizarre it is that they were full throated in their support for Syrians in the first season only to never mention it again except a brief segment in 2019 when trump threatened to pull out of NE Syria and they made no mention of Assad in it which was WILD.
