S2EP77 - UPGRADE / CONVERSION - Convert drum brakes to disk brakes FJ45, FJ40
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Continue to upgrade the FJ45 Troopy, we swap out the old Drum brakes for 60 series front disc brakes.
This was an easy conversion as the FJ45 was 1980's models, there are some differences when working with earlier model Landcruisers with changing/swapping the CV's ends to the spine correct fitment.
This Troopy missed out on getting Disc brake by a couple of months from Toyota, so we strip a front axle off a 60 Series Cruiser and show how will make the swap from drum to disc.
Next on the list for brake upgrades :
1. 80 series booster upgrade with proportioning valve.
2. 60 series rear brakes/handbrake

crazy seeing your son mature through the videos! recently watched some of your older ones back from 3 - 4 years ago and you can tell how much his grown in that short time! pretty cool to have a dad into 40's and learning a lot along the way!
Now you just need to do a disc rear My hj47 was standard disc front I'd love disc rear !!

Did you use the setup from the 79 series?
Nice video I did the disk upgrade also.I got mine from an 85 Toyota pick up bolted on Great upgrade .
Geez Jase, you could've sprung for new rotors whilst its all apart! lol. Another great vid, like portcruiser said, you'll need a proportioning valve to balance out the brakes now too. About to do a similar conversion to my 78 HJ45, although I lucked out and found an 83 HJ47 to donate it's disc brakes. Cheers, Andy.

Thanks mate, Yes proportional valve, will get done when the booster gets installed. I checked out the rotors, they had a lot of meat on them, I will save up and swap for slotted rotors when it come to replacement time.
Hi from Portugal ! You will need an LSPV to make the disk brake system work properly and safely . Don't ask how I know :) ...

@@40ChannelCruiser Hi again ! Ideally you will need to mimic all the braking system from disk brake equipped 45/47/60/7# series . It has small but important diferences from the drum braked system . I believe that the 60 system will also do with minor adaptations . I had a 1982 Portuguese made BJ4rked5 ( yes , they were made in Portugal also , 1st Toyota factory in Europe ) with had drum brakes . I tried to adapt disk brakes from a wrecked BJ73 and I it was very difficult to had the system working properly . Only when I mimicked all the brake system from the 73 and applied it to the BJ45 it worked as intended . I don't have the 45 anymore and don't have any photos , sorry . It was long time ago , late 90s and digital cameras almost didn't exist . But I have a few Land Cruisers and will send you som photos if you want . Keep your great videos coming , I really appreciate them ! Cheers !
Based on your obvious expertise, is there a better fit for the FJ45 disk brake conversion between the FJ60 and the FJ62? Follow your builds to the letter…great stuff , Thanks

Same brake setup, the 62 is newer cruiser with more tech.
Thanks for the videos! What did you do for your steering after switching to 60 knuckles? Ive done the same swap but the 40 series tie rods are too small for the 60 series steering arms.

All 40, 55, 60 series disks and all 1980's, possibly some 1990's 70 series depending on what models you got over there.
Will you need to have it engineered as you're changing the brakes and booster and then have it compliance plated? Great vid as always. Thanks.

As pre NSW Government, there is no need to as this was an option for the 40 series landcruiser, these are the same parts used from the 40 series models at the time. Below is a statement from the NSW GOV Web page. "Replacement of front-wheel drum brakes with disc brakes on a vehicle available from the manufacturer with front disc brakes as an option where all the parts from that option are fitted eg fitting a base model LC Torana which has drum front brakes with the disc front brakes originally supplied to the GTR model LC Torana"

Hi Maarten, Yes, you can swap between the models as there are the same. Only different is on earlier models have different spines but these can be swap around too, to make it all work.
