S2E8 Sprinter Van Life | How I Fixed My 12V Shurflo Pump

This is how I fixed my 12V pump!
I have had intermittent issues with my 12V Shurflo pump multiple times whilst living vanlife. I suspected it was the pressure switch, and this time I found out what was really going on.
My pump is mounted underneath the van, which means it is susceptible to dust etc, and this is what was the problem. Dust and debri was finding its way through a tiny unsealed entry hole in the pressure switch body, and jamming the switch to turn the pump on and off.
I freed up the switch mechanism, and then sealed up the switch body as good as I could to prevent this issue from happening again.
I believe it should be a permanent fix.

Yeah either seal it up or put it inside, I drove on a hectic dirt road since doing the upgrade and haven't had a problem yet

Got to always watch where you stick your prongs, sticking it in the positive very quickly leads to a negative situation,

Hi Jaz, thanks for the update on the shureflow pump pressure switch. I'm not sure if it is a dust issue as I had a look at mine, which is yet to be installed, and I can't really see how dust can get in next to the terminals of the switch. It looks sealed enough to me so I'm thinking that there maybe grease in the switch that is hardening and stopping it from operating properly. Did it stop working in cold weather? have you got any of the failed switches to pull apart to see whats going on? Anyway time will tell with your sealing of the of the switch if dust was the cause. Cheers.

Hi there, what model shurflo pump do you have, is it the same? Mine is a 4009 model. I'm 99 percent sure it was the dust in my case as I could physically here granuals or dirt inside the switch mechanism when I first free the switch button up, but then they cleared and it started moving smoothly and freely.cold weather hasnt made a difference, in I can't pinpoint when the last failures happened but I think it was after driving on dirt roads

My take away from this episode is - if at all possible, mount your plumbing inside the cab where it is protected - and easily accessible. That is what I have done - the only thing under the body is the grey water tank and diesel heater fuel pump.

@@JaznLori SHURflo 4009 - solidly mounted under the bed in a way that the pipes can't contact anything and transmit vibration. Not very loud.
