s2build3 - Taking off the valve covers and testing the valve clearances

Ойын-сауық

Continuing work on the rebuild of the 1983 Honda Magna V65. This time I take the valve covers off and set the valve clearances. The plugs are pulled out, the stator cover removed, and the radiator drained and the auxiliary gas tank drained detailed here.

You did a fine job on this video. It was very helpful as I’m getting ready to do this on my V65. Thank you for posting it!

Good deal! Out of the bikes I've had thus far, the valves on the Magna were the easiest to deal with and get at.

You need feeler gauges on both valves sharing a rocker at the same time. There's a tool which takes camshaft play out of the equation. 07979 - MK30000 RTV is fine if used properly and sparingly.

Why you saying that should not use "rtv" but manual saying opposite ?! Just confused and don't know what to do now.. 😭🤣

Maybe on the corners? But I've not ever seen a leak from those covers except at the gaskets for the screws.

Working an '83 as well. Question: After watching this video, can I assume the carburetors have to be off to remove the valve covers?

No, but for the front you'll need to pull the radiator up out of the way with bungies. It's tight everywhere in that frame. I don't think I had to drain the coolant and pull the radiator, but it's been a long time since I've done this job.

Hey buddy, after watching your video here I decided that because of the problems ive been having with my "new" v65 magna I bought just a few months back that I'd check the valve clearances and since I'm new at doing the valve clearances I read ALOT before hand so as I started to set cylinder 1 and 3 also known as T1.3 I put my finger over that no 1 cylinder and listen for the air and knew that I was Tdc and whenever I looked at my crankcase mating marks it was on 2-4??? But YET I can LOOK directly into cylinder no 1 and see that it's at top dead center? Now what.....?

For that, I'm not sure. The markings have to match up first and foremost. I'd use a very long thing screw driver to double check where your piston is at as well.

you know, you should clean your workspace a bit before filming, or working for that matter, makes it so much easier to move about.

Feeler gauge. It's been awhile, but it's either .005 or .006 across the board for both exhaust and intake.

I do. At least, every 6 months or so I do. But then my garage becomes the dumping ground for everyone else's crap :P.
