Loved, loved, loved!!!! This episode of the podcast. I very rarely use the recommended yarn in a pattern and admittedly usually fly by the seat of my pants with a few minor exceptions to things I look out for. But like you, I agree that the best way to determine if a yarn sub will work even if you put tons of thought into it is the swatch. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us Hailey! ❤

Great tips! What I personally do anytime I am choosing yarn is that I go to Ravelry and look at projects that have been knitted in that particular yarn, or even if anyone have knitted the specific pattern I have in mind in that yarn :) You can easily see how the yarn behaves while not having it at home

Liked your take on substitutions. I do think it’s really important to think about the suggested yarns qualities before choosing a sub. I’ve been knitting a long time and Im learning so much from the much younger ( than me) podcasters, knitters and designers and how they think about yarn. I appreciate all of it.

Yes, agreed about how the fingering and mohair does not equals dk. It creates a completely different fabric. I am glad you said sport weight works better than dk, I’ll try that instead.

Thank you for sharing your experience at substituting yarns and showing us the finished garment. I consider myself a beginner knitter. Deciding on which yarn to use for a pattern I want to knit is a big challenged for me. Your video will help me make better choices. Thank you for the book reference too!

Hi! I’ve just started watching your podcasts recently, and I’m enjoying your work, so thank you! I am currently making Koyamae for one of my daughters ( age 24) in Sandes Garn Double Sunday and Isager silk mohair . I’m really enjoying the fabric so far, but I almost always stick closely to recommended yarn, so we shall see. My only substitute fail so far was subbing Berocco ultra alpaca for Owl by Quince and Co. Both 50/50 alpaca and wool, but my tunic length sweater turned into a full length dress!

I also learned not all wool/alpaca mixtures are equal and also I feel like a large garment only gets larger whenever alpaca is involved. I think the mohair will still give your Koyamae the softness of the original sample. I hope you’ll let me know how it turns out. I’m sure she will love it. I was wearing my just this morning!!

This was a fun and thought-provoking watch. I almost never knit with the yarn a pattern calls for. Except for a recent project where my fiber content was totally wrong for the pattern and resulted in a 🐸, I am happy with my yarn substitutions. Fiber content really does make a difference.

I often look at the pattern I’m interested in knitting on Ravelry and then search through the existing projects to see if anyone else has used the yarn that I’m considering buying or pulling from my stash to knit the pattern. Then I can get a sense of how it has worked for someone else. I also do the opposite: I look at all the projects folks have done with the yarn I’m considering. Obviously there are then the practical considerations (math, swatch, vibes, drape, etc) but my jumping off point is almost always other people’s work.
