S2 E29 Some Simple Scenery | Das Clay & Painting Stonework | Bexhill West Model Railway
Hello everyone,
In S2 E28 I built a turnout from a Scalefour Society kit. Given that I will be demonstrating at Scaleforum again this year I thought I'd display the turnout in a little scene or diorama.
This was probably a daft idea, I'm really busy at the moment, and a couple of weeks worth of spare time really isn't much. However, I'm not one to let a daft idea hold me back...
I'd hoped to document the whole process and thought it'd make a great video. With a little more time, that could have been the case, as there's more to this diorama than immediately meets the eye. However, time has beaten me, so in this video I concentrate on some DAS clay work, and painting some laser cut stone walling.
The level crossing gates are based on an LC&DR design, and are operated by a very simple mechanism which will feature in a future video.
The house has is built from some old plans for labourers cottages built for Earl Carrington's estate in HIgh Wycombe.

I didn't know that DAS clay was still available. My mate Terry and I used to buy it in the 1970s to make model Daleks as we were both Dr Who fans. They weren't very good models, but they kept us amused for hours.
Really interesting. Thanks.
I knew i recognised the voice! Very nice scenery and lots of interesting videos!
Looking good, James. DAS clay feels like a material from the past, that's recently been re-discovered by modellers. I never found it particularly easy to work with, but that was probably just me.
Great how to ! Hello from NZ
Looks really good. Love the operating crossing gates. Im a sucker for old style level crossings!
Very nice as usual James, I must have been on form for once with that name suggestion LOL
An enjoyable watch. The wall looks excellent even with the coping stones that need finishing, great detail. Hope the show goes well atb Andy
Wall looks good and you have done it like modellers I follow do. A dry brush with a lighter grey will bring out the edges and features of the stones and maybe use a cotton bud fast brushed across the surface to remove excess wash.
Just a suggestion James, coat with thinned "Pastel Ground"and then use pastels and pastel pencils, fixing it afterwards with a matt varnish. Your videos are a joy to behold. See you at Uckfield.
Dear James how I love your Videos I'm always in awe at your Skills. Do you also make the Cobblestone impressing roller Tool for O Gauge, and do you have a list of what Hand Tools you would recommend, including soldering Irons. Thank you, already looking forward to your next Video.
Hi James,
James - Tried to have a quick chat at S4um yesterday, but you were always very busy - congratulations! One quick question. Do you have your own laser cutter, and if so, which machine would you recommend?
Constructive criticism? That wall (including the painting) looks great to me.
Lovely video. Really excellent modelling, especially the retaining wall. Slightly uneasy about the point blades not quite going home against the stock rails. Can this be improved?
See you next weekend. All Best
Dear James, awesome little display you’re building! Unfortunately I am not able to visit the Scale Fourum. Anyhow, as you may be aware by now, am very much interested in modeling track, from the ‘ground’ up.
Well done James. You say you are not be one of the "great artists" but you sure nailed that wall! I think you are being too hard on yourself.
Is it possible to pay on the door at Scaleforum? I might pop along as it's not as far for me as it used to be at Leatherhead.
Hello
