S1 - Ep 463 - Marquard, Free State!

Marquard, another captivating town in the Free State. Our visit to Marco’s was truly memorable and the rustic charm of the place was delightful. Our stop at the Golf Club was equally enjoyable. Walking through the Clubhouse and strolling along the fairway provided a tranquil experience. We also had the chance to admire the old station, where we were pleased to find the station names still intact. The town itself was tidy, and the locals were genuinely friendly, just like the boards at the entrance to the town proclaim. Our time in Marquard was truly fantastic. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #marquard #freestate

Worked there for three years. Small as it is, we had a filling station, butchery, three main banks, markets, and bakery. What else can you wish for! A lovely dorpie.

I really enjoyed this visit to Marquard as I have'nt been there since the early 60's. My Grandfather had a farm on the road between Marquard and Winburg. The old gravel road. was before the tar road was build. He participated in the Anglo Boer War This was their local town. That building were Marco's is use to be a dress shop called Furmans se Mode Sentrum. Granny use to shop there. The Pharmacist was a Mr Taback (Grandad called him mr Twak. There was a daily train running between Arlington and Marquard which was the connection to Marquard from the Bethlehem Line. Cumming from Germiston we use to get of at Arlington and got on to the Marquard train that was already there waiting. Your were able to board and then had to wait on board until it departs. It took its time to get to Marquard as it used to stop next to every cream can that was placed next to the line.

Hi you two! Thank you for taking me safely on the dangerous potholed road to Marquard. The town has it all; from grand to dilapidated. Your drone view was magnificent as always, showing how small the town really is. The stone church is a monument in itself. A very interesting tour, I am anxiously waiting for the next one! Keep safe!

Awesome drone coverage summing-up the town. Again, spectacular stonemasonry at the beautifully-designed NG church. I would love to have visited the interior. It's a date ..... 2038! Pity we don't know the exact date the time capsule will be opened. I share your sentiments about Marco's and the 19th hole at the golfclub on a Saturday night - pretty wild I would think! Thanks for the visit.

Still enjoying enjoying your videos. Almost 40 years ago I visited these last two Free State towns you have been to for work purposes. Don't remember much about the towns so it was good to see them again through your camera lenses. There are other towns in that region where I've also been so I will keep watching to see if you visit them.

I was lucky that the weather played along for some drone shots that day. I loved the look of the golf course adjacent to the town, which is a little smaller than Strand. 😁 I so appreciate you continuing this journey with us, it's always fantastic to have you on board, thank you! 🚙👌🏻

Never been in Marquardt, just past there. It's one of those names my brother and I used to giggle about . Love to see all the relics of the past. Especially the ice cream bicycle, well do I remember those days, where we were it was more dairymaid. Good ice cream. 🎉 😊And a rooi telefoonhokkie! Remember that movie? Poor kitty! Obviously a feral tom looking for a handout. And the yellow weighing scale, you always saw this outside the chemist, and you had to put coins in. Marcos is an awesome place, ja, daar kan n mens lekker kuier!! The station is so sad 😢

I can imagine young ones giggling about the town name, it is one of those names! 🤭 Marquard was a really cool stop for us, we enjoyed exploring the little town a lot! Marco's was for sure one of the highlights, as we could already tell when driving past it the first time. That yellow scale took me right back to the earlier days you describe. And the kitty on the doorstep made it just that little extra special for us. 😍🐈 I think there've been many movies featuring phone booths, even one filmed almost entirely in one. Sonia had trouble sitting through that one, I remember clearly! 🤣 Thank you for still jumping on board as we explore each new (and familiar) place, we love it that you enjoy travelling with us and how much it reminds you of happy days and times with your loved ones.

The roads in this part of my beloved Free State were truly shocking! 😱🛣️ We've been on some pretty bad roads in the last 2,5 years, but these must be some of the worst we've seen. I have no doubt that many vehicles sustain serious damage on these roads and I would think that people are injured too as a result.

Thanks for taking us with to Marquard. My thoughts...perhaps one of the best towns that you have visited ever...its amazing the gems that one discovers such as Marco's, from a visual point of view, there's little competition especially here where I reside in the Northern Suburbs...that NG church and many others should be entered into a portfolio for spectacular architecture of the world...its incredible even more so as it was designed during an era of no CAD or other design software...the lasting impression of the Groot Trek gedenk monuments is just how simple these are...no ostentatious monuments delivered at huge expense. You'll hopefully still be around in 2038, I was thinking that maybe its a map leading to Kruger's Gold 😊, still touring our beautiful country, maybe in a flying train to avoid those potholes 😂...what a stunning part of the world you find yourselves in...

Hope you get to visit Sandstone Heritage Trust which is just beyond Ficksburg. They have tons of old railway, army tanks& trucks, and old farming stuff on the property plus an operating narrow gauge steam railway! 🚂🚃🚜🚚🛤🙂
