S1 - Ep 304 - Van Wyksvlei - A Small, Dry Town with Friendly People!

Our visit to Van Wyksvlei was an absolute blast! The drive there was an adventure in itself, with black rocks and a gravel road that added to the excitement. When we got to this small, dry town, we were greeted by a lovely church. It was great to experience the warm hospitality and kindness of the friendly people. The real adventure began when we decided to drive up the bumpy road to the top of the hill overlooking the town. It was an exciting ride, with twists and turns that kept us on the edge of our seats. The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking, and we felt like we were on top of the world. Our visit to Van Wyksvlei was an unforgettable experience. The drive there was so much fun and the town and its people left a lasting impression on us. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #vanwyksvlei

DustBugs & company, it looks like I got in early to catch the comments. A couple or three things, in the Northern Cape, churches again are well maintained and plentiful, people are happy to see visitors, and there is not a single lawn mower shop. Thanks for the ride.

No lawnmower shop in a few hundred kilometre radius, I'm sure. Bone dry and almost no grass grows anywhere. As far as the churches and the friendly people go, absolutely agree too. 💒 This part of the Northern Cape is dry and hot, but has this magical attraction and of course the quiet stillness of the surroundings. So surreal at times. 🚙🙂

Hi you two! What a wonderful trip. Blue skies and abundant rough road driving. Beautiful churches and a lot of peaceful open space. The trip up the hill really put your driving skills and your small car to the test. It was worth it with the hilltop view making up for not being able to send up the drone. Being the driest town in the country within sight of a large dam makes Van Wyksvlei very special. The dry plains will never cease to fascinate me. Thank you for taking me along. Looking forward to the next time. Keep safe!

An absolute abundance of peaceful and open space indeed! Add silent to that and you have a deadly combination! 🚙🤩 It was great to see the dam in the distance and we heard that, since the dam has water again, lucerne has been planted which is such fantastic news! We are equally fascinated by these endless landscapes of seeming nothingness. But there's so much if we just take the time to look! I think you see it too. 😊

The area is most certainly very captivating if given an opportunity to show what it has to offer. We never linger in one place, but the time in Van Wyksvlei was rather impactful and I think the silence, except the soothing sound of the breeze, was what had the most profound impact on the two of us. 😍 Sonia was indeed very brave with the road up the hill, she wasn't altogether happy I might add. But she did give me a big smile when we were down at the bottom again. I'm glad you enjoyed the view from up there, I did too! 🚙😁

Van Wyksvlei is really small and very, very dry, but we had a great time and we're happy that you made it up that hill with us! If there was ever great footage accompanied by real unscripted commentary for a car advertisement, then it was your trip up that hill...Renault should really sponsor you guys...you're really showing the Kwid's capability and worth. Salute to the Policeman's kindness and sense of place to take us up that hill, what an incredible view. I smiled when you were ascending the hill and Sonia was saying that something was big and to your right was that big "donger" in the road, with half the road missing 😂meanwhile she was talking about the goat missed the "donger"..we know how nervous she gets.😅 Those who created the water solution have another big solution to solve...your opening shot of the quiet open road, I would love to be there. Hopefully Vanwyksvlei will see some rejuvenation after this episode. Was the front facade of the NG church rebuilt, the brick part? I love the incorporation of the "slasto" stone its iconic, sad story re their Dominee...Thank-you for taking us with..🙏

There were quite a few donga's and luckily my darling wife didn't notice them all and looked at the goats instead. Thank you to them for distracting her! 🥰🐐 We chatted to a local gentleman in town and he explained that the brick facade was indeed added later and built over the original plasterwork to cover the damage caused by years of sun and rain damage. The slasto bits were also added later to cover the concrete which got worn by the elements over the years too. 💒 They love their church and take great pride in it! We appreciate, as always, you coming with! 🚙😁

Hi guys someone was definitely joking with the name its very dry like Christmas when they got a regular water supply love the the 146 km gravel road love the funny banter about the sheep and the almost blank street sign as you said thank God for maps me and my pal 1992 driving through East Germany managed to miss a massive town we had a map from 1985 it said karl marx stadt but they had changed name back to Chamiets ⁷drove straight past it lol the DRF church built in brick just stood out in almost the middle of nowhere. The hotels and omallys bar loved it pity it wasn't in use im with you love these little towns well done Sonia putting up with the ride up that steep hill it was like a roller coaster .i know what you mean elbows and knees on that rough surface on the rugby pitch when i was a youngster we played soccer on ashfelt pitches another place to add to my education thanks for taking me your laughing always cheers me up cheerio till the next one

It is truly like Christmas for them now that they've got a regular supply of water. That which we take for granted every day of our lives, it kind of puts things into perspective a little. 💦 I loved your story about the map from 1985 not telling you the current name of the city in East Germany! 🚙😁 I often wonder how we coped without satellites and online maps, there was indeed a time when we relied solely on road signs and paper maps. 😱 Soccer on asphalt pitches sounds about as bad as rugby on that hard ground surface in Van Wyksvlei! Sonia felt very sorry for the locals' knees and elbows! Thank you for always having a chuckle with us, travelling wouldn't quite be the same without a healthy dose of humour! 😆

Such peace. Some people cant handle it, I love it! Grasskapies! Dont blame you, they really do look like sheep. And those black rocks look like tortoises. Shows how cleverly animals are made to disguise themselves in the background. Could the rocks be black as result of volcanic activity? Burnt by lava? Or maybe its some mineral deposit like iron or manganese? We passed through VanWyksvlei back in 1989. Doesnt look a lot different. It was in July that we did our tour and the weather was much nicer, not so hot, but still pretty warm. Nice to see the Taalfees monument. I see most houses have a fat watertank, including the Fullies Church! Its the way to go out there. So strange to see a rugby field with no grass. Makes me think of the old Ingrams advert...hands, heel, knees and elbows....Nice helpful cop. But he should have picked you up at the bottom of the koppie and saved the petrol! What an amazing view from up top!

We just love the peace and the quiet and both of these seem to be in endless supply in Van Wyksvlei. 😍 Sonia and her bush sheep, that provided us with endless chuckles wherever we saw sheep or those clumpy bushes along the way for the rest of the trip. 🐑🎋 Volcanic activity may very well be responsible for those blackened rocks. No research we did, could provide us with a definitive explanation, so it remains a mystery. 🤷‍♂️ In Mervin, the policeman's defence, he did offer to take us up the hill in the police vehicle, but we declined since I wanted to tackle that road myself. It was fun! 🚙😎

My husband always puts the sound off when its only music (it's too hard for him, while I can't hear your voices if he doesn't lift the sound, hehe), then when it started and there was no sound, I was about to shout at him again when I realised you deliberately wanted us to "hear" the silence. That was so clever.

Yup, that silence. It's actually unreal how quiet it is, we could sit and listen to it for hours. In silence of course. 😶 It sounds like you and hubby have figured out a system by which the music doesn't bother him, but you can still hear us talk. Sounds like a good compromise to me! 🚙😆

Ha Curtis olé mijn reactie is alweer weg gevallen. Het blijft een mysterie... ☹.

I honestly have no idea why your comments disappear every time, it is indeed a mystery which I am unable to solve! 🤷‍♂️ But I did read your earlier comment and I did type up an answer, so here goes: The Kwid did indeed play outside that day and it was great fun, despite many of my passengers (in the front and in the back) being rather nervous! 🚙😁 We had done many worse roads before, but Sonia chose to forget that in the moment. Luckily all was perfectly fine and the view from the top was worth every clutch of the dashboard! 🥰 We spoke to a local person about the monuments, but he was unable to tell us whether there were any parts missing. 🤷‍♂️🏛️ The interesting thing is that the monument also celebrates the centenary of the town and deep inside are memorabilia stored, dating back to the time the monument was erected. Very interesting indeed. My thought was that the rugby field is standard size, but because it's soil surrounded by more soil, I think the size is misinterpreted. I think it might just be an optical illusion. We loved seeing the goats graze in this harsh environment, such hardy creatures! 😍🐐

Editing is an enormous job with four videos a week on top of our full-time jobs and travelling schedule, so I simply don't have the time to conduct, film and edit interviews, which will in most cases require sub-titles as well. Not many folks are keen to be filmed either. 🤷‍♂️
