Hi DustBugs, Port Elizabeth was my home town. I was born in South End. This was the district six of P. E. I Worked on the harbour and watched the dismantling of the community in South end. My grandmother and great grandmother lived there. All races lived together in peace there. The dome of green mosque overlooking the harbour was removed to make way for the freeway. This never materialize. The dome was replaced years later. The fort overlooks the Baakens River. In the a early days sailing ships used to Moor there (before the development of the harbour) In 1968 we had a flood that covered the whole valley. Factories and housed were under water. Cars, caravans etc. ended up in the harbour. I lived there for 40 years. I still have family and friends that I visit from time to time. Great place. NB: the area around the fort is not safe for tourist. Hope you visit Jeffries Bay and Cape St. Francis. Thank you once again for a great video. Always appreciate your work.

Thank you for sharing all that information and memories of the beautiful city you once called home, we appreciate that! 👌🏻😍 That flood sounds horrendous, we didn't even know about that. 🌊😨 I really wanted to have a closer look at the pyramid and lighthouse at the Donkin Reserve, but there were so many people attending an event and I really didn't feel comfortable to walk so far away from the car and leave Sonia there. I didn't know the area around the fort wasn't safe! Luckily there was a security guard on duty and he also kept an eye on Sonia. The fort and the view from up there were absolutely amazing! We visited J-Bay and Cape St Francis on previous visits. When we visit the larger towns and cities, we pick a few select places to stop at since there are so many! You can check out Episodes 195 and 196 if you like! 🚙😁

Thank you for this special video. I used to live at 12 Fort street, just up the road from the Fort. You drove past it. In my days there were no trees in the road. I was aged 6 at the time. We used to play endlessly at the fort as 12 Fort street had little garden. The building you showed at the back of the Donkin was my school - Alert Jackson. The class room building on the left was my class. We used to swim at Kings beach. All very special memories. Those buildings in Fort Street are all national monument's now. Cheers.!!

Thank you for sharing those vivid memories with us, it's always wonderful to hear when our videos remind viewers of special times and memories in their own lives and that certainly seems to be the case with you! 🚙🤩 What a playground that fort must've been! Any child's dream come true and with a spectacular view to boot! Those houses up the road from the fort are stunning and still in good shape, which was great to see! They certainly deserve to be National Monuments! 😍🏛️

All looks so familiar, including the road resurfacing, which was going on back in 1992 also. I can understand naming after the Baakens River, but what does it ACTUALLy mean? Windy all right. Some places more than others. First year we we there we were in Kamma Park suburb, and my washing blew right off the line! That wasnt funny as most of it was nappies, having just had my first baby. So we invested in a drier. Then we bought a house in Mill Park and the wind wasnt so bad there. My fave beach was Kings Beach. In summer the best time to go swimming is 8AM! Its so warm, and the wind hasnt got up yet. Love the skate boarding thing...whoops! Spectacular fail!! The pier is so awesome. Seeing the waves rolling by. PE is not short on beautiful old buildings. Starting with the main library, I used to spend hours in there.Its good that you explored the Prospect Hill area, its one of the best areas to see historic buildings.St Georges park is not far from where I used to live. Had many good walks around there. And my first two babies were born in St Georges Hospital. You really need a few weeks there to explore.Thank you for so many happy memories

We weren't able to find the ACTUAL meaning of Gqeberha while we were driving, only the explanation that Sonia gave in our video. A quick online search a few minutes ago, still only tells me that, so I really don't know. 🤷‍♂️ As you know, we don't stay in one place for longer than a day at a time, but what we got to see of this beautiful city was breathtaking. 🥰🏛 It's been a long time for us, but it was so good to be back there! 🚙🤩 I'm always glad to hear when our videos remind you of some good times in your life!

Hi guys fantastic accommodation. Top class place. PE is so big now and has florida look and very modern nothing like I remember but the the old part of PE, is more like I remember the architecture stunning and would not look out of place in London and how great to see your family name on that wonderful monument loved the pier and stalls saw some tyre sandals and kobkeries .l especially liked the drill hall and the Fort as I'm ex British army I must say I struggled to take all in but I'm glad to see the reference to the 1820 settlers l still have a post card of the statue from 1970s stunning RC Cathedral and another RC convent loved the minibus graveyard fantastic video of PE thanks for another great trip cheerio till the next one

Our accommodation was very comfortable, we had a lovely stay! 🏠 PE is such a beautiful city in a stunning setting, so we loved visiting again after many years! I thought you might enjoy the tyre sandals, I actually thought of you when I saw the sign! 😁 The old Drill Hall had Sonia rather overwhelmed with its intricate detail and crown on top! 🏛️👑 I loved the fort and the view from up there! We don't often explore places as large as PE, there was so much to see! 🚙😁

This episode was priceless, you forgot your lines in the morning re Qqeberha...possibly due to the previous nights horrendous driving that you unfortunately had to experience and the best one was when you were referring to the construction of the cathedral on the hillside your comment "how the devil 😅😂..." I also haven't been to Gqeberha for some time, and am very impressed as always with the tourist pleasing development around Summerstrand. Cape Town and its environs pale in comparison, the V&A Waterfront is really a tourist trap, theres not really that much to do if one is not into spending money or sitting in restaurants. When Sonia mentioned "holiday vibe" , I was thinking "Strand vibe" as that area is perhaps the closest to the Strand, and what the Strand can easily become with more hotels and tourist friendly amenities and infrastructure. The name "international" for the airport is as odd as naming the airport after a "polarising" fellow who no one really knows. Instead of names, the focus should be on job creation, houses, food on plates, electricity and clean water. Thanks again for the great content 👍

You know better than anyone that scripted is not our vibe! 😁 Sonia says I must tell you her tongue was tired of practising the clicking sound by the time we left that morning! 🤣 Without getting into any matters political, since that's not what I do on our channel, I agree with you about the name changes. The history of a place, whether it be good or bad, remains the history forever and no name change can wipe that away. Not to even think about the money it costs you and me as taxpayers. I shall stop now. 🤷‍♂️ I'm not surprised that you would pick up the 'how the devil' comment at the cathedral, I didn't even realise fully what I said there until I read your comment. 💒🙈 The beachfront in GQEBERHA is beautiful and clearly enjoyed by thousands of people, even on a random out-of-season Saturday we were there. I also believe much more could be made of the beachfront in our hometown of Strand. The Promenade was a fantastic foundation and we hope the plans we hear about every so often will come into being one day. Your company on our trip to this beautiful city is very much appreciated, thank you! 🚙😁

I know that your channel isn't political and thats perhaps its uniqueness, your respect that you show for places, finding beauty in obscure places along with your unscripted comments is what draws me to your channel. It is by far of the best on KZread and we do our best in sharing it far and wide. You can tell Sonia that my business partner who comes from Lwandle just calls it PE 🤣

Great video, my late mother lived on Hope Street, just above St Augustine’s Cathedral. My family are devout Catholics. My grandparents and my mom and her siblings attended mass at St Augustine’s and my grandparents were buried from the cathedral. My mom and her sisters went to the Holy Rosary Convent, now closed sadly. The building with the high windows is the Feather Market hall which originally was where the ostrich feathers from the farms surrounding PE and the Karoo were sold.

Thank you for this trip. It was so nice to see it once again but long ago. You covered such a lot in this vidoe excellent done. These days i am waiting for the next one like a small child waiting to open his presents. Well done till the next one. Luckily my seat is booked.

Hi you two. Two things struck me about this trip. When you entered PE the blue skies opening up and the palm trees waving to welcome you. And of course the Apple Express tracking you right into town! I've never been to PE and you taking us to those historical parts blew me away, as it did Sonia. I'll have to make this short. I'm in the Waterberg at the moment with Wifi coming and going. Suffice it to say thank you for this most interesting trip and Keep safe!

Firstly, I'm jealous of you in the Waterberg! It's so far away from home for us, but an area we would love to go and explore on a future trip. I'm sure you're having an amazing time! 🚙🤩 I haven't seen Sonia that excited about so many buildings often, so you must know they were very special indeed. Wowzer, thank you for sharing that! I have no idea where Donkin Street is, but I assume it must be close to the Donkin Reserve with the pyramid and lighthouse. I can only imagine what it looked like in the area when some of those buildings we saw, were still young. It must've been absolutely gorgeous if they still look that good today! 🚙🏛️😍

I have no idea why it happens! 🤷🏼‍♂️ Luckily I did see your comment before it disappeared and this was my original response: And we thank you for the first👍🏻all the way from 🇱🇺, we appreciate that so much! Gqeberha is such a beautiful and big city and you know we explore the smaller places for the most part, but it's simply not possible to drive past this pretty place and not spend at least a day and night there! 🚙🤩 The minibus art on the rockface was fantastic and so typical of South African humour! 🚕 You were lucky to see only ones in good condition when you visited, not all of them are and many of them drive rather fast and recklessly at times! 😨 The buildings in the old district of the city had both of us in awe and we couldn't believe that there were so many! From the Drill Hall to the Cathedral, every single one was stunning! 😍🏛️💒 You did definitely see overhead electrical wires which indicated train tracks! Not so sure about passenger rail traffic anymore, but my thought is that there must still be from time to time. The majority of the trains carry manganese and iron ore from the mines to the harbour if I understand correctly. 🚉 Our Chow Mein and spring rolls were to die for, we love Chinese food and this meal was particularly tasty. 🍜

Welcome to my city, the Holy Rosary convent is now my grandsons school, Elson Academy, we travel there everyday to run a little tuck shop. Must say i was a bit nervous while you were traveling through Central especially the Fort, sadly not very safe these days . Enjoy your stay here & thanks for visiting 🥳

This trip was more than a month ago already and we're long back home. Your city is beautiful and treated us very well! 🚙😍 I made sure to always keep a close eye on the vehicle if Sonia stayed behind and luckily there was a security guard at the fort too, which made me feel a little easier. How cool that you get to visit that district with those gorgeous buildings every day! We haven't seen such a concentration of beautiful buildings in a long time! 🤩🏛️

I just found your channel this morning and have been binge watching all your videos. I especially enjoyed the Loerie video and Humansdorp. I live in Uitenhage now called Kariega and we had a beach house in Gamtoos when I was growing up. So Loerie is a place I basically spent a great deal of time as that's where we got supplies while staying at our Gamtoos beach house. Pity you guys didn't have time to come to Uitenhage as there is quite a lot of history here too and many monuments. Keep up the great work. I'll be watching in the future from now on. 🤗

Welcome to our channel, it's great to have you on board! 🚙😁 I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed the videos you've seen so far! We mainly explore the smaller towns and villages since we're always on the move during the weeks we travel. We will most certainly return to the Eastern Cape on future trips and will see if we can incorporate Uitenhage on our route. We drove through the town one Sunday on our way back home from a future trip and it looked crazy busy! 😳 Although I was born in the Eastern Cape, my folks moved when I was still very young, but I'll always have a special place in my heart for the incredible natural beauty so typical of the Eastern Cape! We loved our visit to Loerie, it was a great little place to explore. If you haven't seen it already, we visited the Gamtoos Mouth in Episode 194. Another beautiful area! 🌳⛰

I moved to cape town from port elizabeth a year ago.i miss p.e dearly.watching this puts a ache in my heart😭

Peeps, I imagined P.E. very differently, having never been there myself. Those palm trees and the mosaic design brick paving was so, so welcoming. Like any other place here or overseas it's worth researching the "hot" spots before regrets. Just as I cannot go to New York and just wander anywhere. If I don't catch cold because I return to my B&B only in my socks, I may not live to tell the tale. P.E. is a beauty, the history and the preservation of the old hotels, catholic religious buildings et al. and that was just a snippet of P.E. I didn't that so many of my traveling fiends (like Jim Reeves sang "a stranger is a friend you do not know") were from the windy city or still live there. Now I have to get my sixpence worth in as well. Just as Port Elizabeth rolls of your tongue with ease but is referred to as P.E. as well, what will Gqeberha be initialised to, I wonder.

Gqeberha is a beautiful city and it was fantastic to see and experience it again! I'm glad we could show you too. 🚙🤩 It's welcoming, interesting and above all friendly and we just love it! I do disgree with you fundamentally about one thing though. We don't believe, even in the slightest, doing extensive research about a place before we decide to travel there. We're explorers at heart and that would take away all the fun for us which we experience when we happen upon or discover something. That's how we'll always travel, whether it be locally or internationally. We never have regrets about anything we supposedly 'missed', not even any hot spot. There is simply too much to see to include and see everything anyway with the way we travel. We waited a long time to be tourists in our own country and that's exactly what we're going to be. We don't linger. We visit, we explore and we move on. 😁 The only thing I would research is of course weather and the safety and security in a place since our personal safety will always be my priority. Back to this beautiful city. How, or even if, the name would be abbreviated I have no idea, with the first two letters being the most difficult to pronounce for most of those who do struggle. 🤷‍♂️

Sadly for us, the wife and I haven't been back to PE from 2001. We lost our son 28 yrs old the same year 2001 by accident. He worked and lived there from 1995. We still have family there.😢😢

Best video of its kind I have ever seen. I felt as if I was there with you. A real treat. I am now living on the island of Madeira but there is no place on earth like South Africa. Port Elizabeth seems quieter than Johannesburg. The buildings were were beautiful and the whole place looked so clean and neat.

Looked up the strange name... The local name for the Baakens river. Was apparently the "border" between the Cape colony and the eastern side.... They could have chosen an easier name....😥🤨😐

You can go anywhere, we live in a beautiful country .

People used to be on my case about this name change. There are so many costs which come with changing a city's name, and in my opinion the funds could've been allocated elsewhere. The city has been experiencing a water crisis and energy crisis. It is better to improve the quality of life of the people, services, infrastructure, security, and to make it worthwhile for businesses to invest in the city than simply changing the name.

Visited PE now Gqeberha 6 years (Nearly missed my flight going back but had my best Hake and Chips here). Lovely to revisit again in your back seat👏👏

I remember we use to go to Cadilac Jacks , The Blinking Owl and Barney's there in the late 1990'S

They all sound like cool places to hang out! 😁🍻 I wasn't familiar with the city in the 90's. My only exposure to the city was the Buffalo Rally in the 80's. 🏍️😎 I got to know it a little better when we spent more time there about 15 years ago now. Super cool place!

I like your "double-barrelled" version of the city with its new name. There's no need to choose one or the other, and it's better to have both. It's still "P.E", just because that's what it's always been called (and I don't need to know which Elizabeth is involved; it's just a familiar sound); and then Gqeberha, since we need to try and speak each other's languages as far as possible (with the understanding that for most people languages are quite difficult). And to retrieve the river's ancient name, too. (Just like Durban-Ethekwini has retrieved the bay's ancient name, and still has the familiar Durban-sound that once referred to some or other Victorian politician, or something - who cares.) We do probably need an American version of Gqeberha (also for South Africans who find that the click just doesn't want to work for them). For starters, very few Americans can say the, "rha" (they call Bach, "Baack"), so that one would have to go semi-phonetic, and just be "Ha" (like the Californians call the Baja Peninsula "Baahaa" while the "Baj" in "Baja" is really the "Bach" in "Bach" - but it's impossible to pronounce that). And then the "Gqe" is going to just have to turn into "Gê" ( ;-) ). At that point you might think I'd be done with the American version of Gqeberha, but that's thinking like a South African, if you do. You'd be thinking the "be" would just be "bê" - easy kapeazy. But not so fast, Jose ("Hohzay") ... In American a "be" like that would be pronounced "Bay" (as in the English version of Die Baai - maybe the city needs a triple-barrelled name?). Sorry, that's turned into a mess. Let me gather up the bits and pieces of Gqeberha (good idea to say it often, then it sticks). Guh-Bayr-Hah. Not for local consumption, but necessary for international use.

We wanted to know after which Elizabeth Port Elizabeth was named, that's an important part of the history of the city for us, as with every place we visit. 😍🇿🇦 As far as the name goes, I'm fairly proficient with the click in the Xhosa language, but the pronunciation had even me flummoxed until we asked Theka at the petrol station who cleared it all up! He had to say it like ten times and he didn't miss a beat. He was just the coolest guy! 😎 As for my wife, she has more of a Northern Sotho tongue, having matriculated in Pretoria, and there are no clicks, only the (for some) dreaded hl-sound, which is also tricky to pronounce correctly. We lived in the US for a number of years and I'll never forget how taken they were with our accents and we with theirs. @@DustBugsTravel I've just found out that Elizabeth was the name of the late wife of Rufane Donkin, so at least there's some local connection between the city and its original namesake. (We managed to accidentally gain a few quite illustrious names in the Eastern Cape. Well one I can think of, offhand - Herschell - from the great astronomer. It would be a shame to replace the name of his sleepy little namesake town with something of only local significance.)

Hi ‘sicko’ you very much remind me of our famous Dutch artists (Kees) van Kooten & (Wim) de Bie. Like them you are a briljant artist in the way you talk about the grammer & pronouciation of languages! Very interesting to read 👍 . If you search KZread on ‘Van Kooten + E.I. My father worked for Goodyear. My school was Collegiate School for Girls. We lived on Belmont Terrace just across from King Edward ( I think?) Hotel overlooking the Donkin. Swam around St. George’s Park and always had to visit the donkey statue and see the monkeys at Happy Valley. Sound familiar to anyone out there? When I was 7 I was in love with an older man, ( at least 10!) Andrew Pickup. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

I wouldn't call 280+ kilos just down the road! 😁🚙 This trip was more than a month ago already and we're long back home, but we'll be back to the Eastern Cape on future trips and will eventually explore our way all the way to East London. 👌🏻

Editing is a huge amount of work and simply impossible to do on the road with our travelling schedule. Once back home, I edit in the evenings after work, so our videos are always between one and six weeks behind the actual trip dates. 😁🚙

Thank you, we're glad that you enjoy our videos! 🚙🤩 We've always thought it a very beautiful city and we still love it! The setting is fantastic, the folks are friendly, the buildings are exceptionally beautiful, the history is intriguing, so us explorers can't ask for anything more! The driving, especially during loadshedding, leaves a lot to be desired, but that was our only complaint. 🤷‍♂️🛣️ As far as Gqeberha the name goes, I happen to be fairly proficient with the Xhosa clicking sounds since I was born in the Eastern Cape and able to speak basic Xhosa before English, but I know there are many people who struggle with the pronunciation of the name. To us, it'll really always be PE and that's just the way it is.

Can I take a walk around the historical buildings you show, or do I need a car? The streets are pretty empty, is it dangerous to walk there?

I won't advise that you walk there, we were sadly cautioned against that. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think you'll be safer exploring by vehicle. 🚙

Sonia has very serious knee issues and it is difficult for her to navigate uneven surfaces and stairs / steps. The last thing we want, is for her to get hurt while we're travelling. She is totally happy exploring from the vehicle. 🚙

Some of the river beds in the area that use to flow through pe has red clay. So not to deep under ground in some areas youll find red clay

That is at the McArthur Baths swimming pool complex. When I was working at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the electricity dept, the upgrade to the pool's electrical supply was my project. It was part of a major upgrade to the complex, including adding heating to one of the pools. The restaurant at the pool used to be "Up the Khyber," so I was surprised to see that it is now Chicken Licken. Indian food at the beachfront seemed a bit odd to me, but Chicken Licken makes more sense for people who are hungry after/during a visit to the beach.

a Stupid name vir Port Elizabeth the Walmer Township is Called Gqeberha which is the old Walmer Location and there is a School with the same name. The Committee did not do their homework. The Municipality is Nelson Mandela Municipality and the City is called Ibayi by the Xhosa people. They should actually reconsider the name change to NMBay The problem is that 90 % of the Inhabitants can not pronounce that name. The previous ANC Mayor already requested the name Change to either NMBay or Ibay but it was refused.. The refusal is damage to the Governing Party. Yet they should listen to the people because the government is not the owner of the land, but the land belongs to the people.

Let me correct you the name ibhayi comes from the name bay so it's ibhayi or ebhayi in Xhosa secondly Gqeberha is a river in South end it's mouth it's the one in houbour.. so it's our indigenous thing to name a place by it's name..

As someone who grew up in Port Elizabeth I also didn't like the name but now I love it. 😂😂 I was annoyed too but have accepted it now.

never ever heard such s rediculous name for Port Elizabeth , people don't even pronounce it properly because its not a proper name , they mixed it with suppose to be Xhosa and Khoisan, who is this person that' gave that name , i don't even want to know, waisting money on name change, feed the poor , with that

I also don't always understand why the place names have to be changed while the country is in dire need of those funds for essential services. We'll use the new names as far as possible, when we remember and of course if we can pronounce it! 😁
