S1 - Ep 298 - Hankey - A Town we Explored in the Gamtoos Valley!

During our visit to Hankey in the Gamtoos Valley, we explored the town and learned so much about its rich history. We arrived at our accommodation late in the afternoon and set out to explore the next day. Our first stop was the old station, a relic of the town's past that gave us a glimpse into its history. We marvelled at the old railway bridge and imagined what life might have been like during its heyday. Next, we happened upon the graves of the preacher who started the settlement in 1822. What an amazing find! One of the highlights of our visit was our search for the irrigation tunnel which was dug by hand. We were impressed by the ingenuity and tenacity of the system and the dedication of the men who had dug it so many years ago. Finally, we visited the uncompleted Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance. What a tragic story the one of Sarah Baartman is. She was a Khoi woman who was exhibited as a freak show attraction in Europe in the early 19th century. We hope they can get the centre completed soon. Overall, our visit to Hankey was a fascinating and enriching experience and we left with a deep appreciation for the town's unique history and culture. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #hankey #gamtoosvalley

    My dad build the sundail. He and my mom came from the Netherlands in 1948. He was a small farmer and passed away in 2005 at the age of 90. My mom in 1996. The 'venster' at the tunnel is a must, although it is at places a bit tough and steep.

How cool that your dad built the sundial! 👌🏻 I can only imagine the hike up to the window, but between my wife's and my knees, we won't even make it up those steps we drove past. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It was good enough seeing it from afar! 😁⛰️

    Hankey was an explorer's dream with all the interesting things we found! 🚙🤩 The aerial footage gave an idea of how sprawled out the town is, which is something we didn't quite realise as we were driving through the streets! The Gamtoos Valley is spectacularly beautiful and we're happy we finally got to see it! I remember we saw a similar rock with a window or eye in Zastron in the Free State. They call it The Eye of Zastron. (Check out Episode 207, it's even on the thumbnail!) I'm sure there are more, but that one comes to mind at the moment. ⛰️👁️

    Hi you two! Thanks for taking me on this amazing historical trip. Starting of with cuppas no less! Another town founded and kept growing by missionaries. The town looks quite lively and so beautiful with the green arounds. Your drone views again put everything in perspective. The tunnel was amazing. Can't think of all the labour that had gone in there by hand. Sarah Baartman is an unfortunate and shameful part of our history. I hope they can finish the memorial centre soon. It is difficult to find more words to express my appreciation for your video. I'm looking forward to the next trip! Keep safe!

    Yup, cuppas @ 5c a piece no less! 😁☕ The tunnel situation had us thinking long and hard about how 'soft' we are today. Those guys dug a tunnel by hand in order to get water to their crops, that's the definition of tough in my eyes! 😳 The Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance is impressive, even in its unfinished state, and I really do hope they find the right contractor to finish it soon. Hankey was indeed a very interesting place, I'm glad you thought so too! 🚙👌🏻

    Hi guys very interesting little town they say never judge a book by the cover. Your accommodation as seems usual 5 star loved the old stove and the old advert. The drone footage really puts the place in perspective and the gravel road always something surprising the little cemetery so interesting plus the story about the horse post the Rev Phillips came from kicaldy in Scotland nice old buildings. Great to see the citrus train tracks and iron bridge nanas seemed a nice place biltong and droeswors lovely. Very interesting the tunnel dug by hand they certainly had gumption back in those days. The strawberry fields for ever lol .the golf club looks busy .in the UK you have to wear red tops in royal courses.plenty of churches in Hanky dated back to 1822 .I've heard of Sarah Bartman I think she was exhibited in uk and Europe as a curiosity. The town actually appears quite a bit larger from the air than one feels when driving through it, but what a bustling place! 🚙😁 The thought of crouching down in that small end of the tunnel was terrifying to me, I can't even imagine how brave those men were to dig it by hand! Another superb trip through the pages/footsteps of time/history. I loved the tunnel - you seemed to be able to walk upright, which is amazing since you are tall - but I watched your shadow, and it wasn’t stooping. The birds outside were utterly mesmerising/captivating - I would not have wanted to leave until they flew off and their heavenly music came to an end. The Window was also delightful to see - even though from some distance. Another thoroughly enjoyable day. I was also most impressed with the old wood stove and bakoond at your lovely overnight stop. Eskom outages be damned! You’d have been able to produce a feast with those!

    I was also surprised that I could walk totally upright in the tunnel! I just didn't quite see my way open to crouch through that hole at the end! 🚇😨 The birdsong outside the tunnel was crystal clear, it was actually incredible to hear! 😍🦜 I'm sure the braai and old stove at Bonsai are well-utilised by other guests, but we're so dead-tired at the end of each travelling day, that we've long ago stopped preparing meals in the evenings. It was such a restful place for an overnight stay though, we loved it! 🚙🏡

    I would've loved to see the inside of the old churches, they have so much character and clearly reflect the long history with the town. 💒 It's not all that common for churches here to be repurposed. I remember us thinking this was the first one we've seen being used as business premises, but we've actually seen one before in Trompsburg in the Free State too where the church was bought and used as a shop selling second-hand goods. The tunnel with its birdsong was one of the highlights of our visit to Hankey. I have the utmost respect for those men who dug the tunnel by hand, that couldn't have been easy. 🚇😨

    Hmm. The more I think about it, the more I feel like Sarah Baartman has "been expropriated". Actually, it's as if she's being "exhibited as a freak" all over again. These great big monuments don't respect her humanity just on account of their size. You know what they do promise to conjur up some respect for, by being so much bigger than the 'insignificant-little-dwellings' the monumental display is piled up among? For the *Monument Builders* ... Nê? (If you want to writê ê with a kâppie on it on your computer, switch to English International Keyboard, and then get used to having to add a space whenever you want just a plain caret ^ or quotation mark ' in whatever you're writing. I mention this just in case that ê annoys someone by being a mystery.)

    Your opinion is well-noted. 👍🏻 We travel for enjoyment (and a little enlightenment and education), but skepticism and cynicism don't accompany us when we're on the road. We think it's a fantastic idea to have the Cultural Centre to bring awareness to not only Sarah Baartman, but the culture and plight of others like her also. I love it that it's so elaborate and large, it would just be fantastic if they could finish it so that more tourists can visit the area for that much-needed cash injection. 🚙🇿🇦 The last thing we worry about on our channel, is the correctness of language, so you go right ahead and put your kappies exactly where you like. 😁^

  • @sicko_the_ew

    @sicko_the_ew

    @@DustBugsTravel Ja, it's a bit of a tricky rope to walk on. An honest to goodness cultural centre with high quality exhibits (not fancy ones, but ones that are historically accurate, and not just perversions of this into propaganda pieces) would be a great thing to have there. But you know what? For the things that matter, it could quite easily have been housed in e.g. a disused church - at least as a first home. The building doesn't matter; the exhibits do. (So I suppose I'll have to wait and see whether the exhibits show all aspects of the way of life the simple arrival of simple folk of another kind, with simple aims of "living a normal life" permanently altered (to put it moderately). It's just that it looks like there have been years (decades, even?) of quarreling over "the display cabinet", that makes me think the ones fighting over this are fighting for "territory" of various kinds rather than the honour of restoring her peoples dignity. (It's impossible to give hers back. It was taken away from her long, long ago.) But while we wait for the "display case" to house the "actual thing", I suppose it's not possible to judge what it will be. Maybe if grumpy people grumble enough about it in advance, though, this will strengthen the hand of those who want to do a good job of what goes into whatever is eventually settled on as the "centre" in time to come? (Right now, it would seem the best thing to do is finish what's been started, and just live with that, but that's very much just the starting point, and not the realization of the potential of this, or the final "monument capture" we should hope doesn't happen. I can at least just apologize for offering what seemed at the time to be helpful suggestions about howto do kappies. :-) (It's not something I'd have mentioned if I was making a Cause out of all this instead of just one of those observations it's just natural to make after years, and years, and years of Monument Building, and name changes, and reconciliation of that kind.) You've got me thinking, now, whether I'm being completely unreasonable in my suspicions (from seeing the ruins of the previous Sarah Baartman Monument followed by the abandoned - for now - foundations of this one.) Am I? Off the top of my head, a quick list. The statue of Shaka at Durban airport. (vs lets say a classroom). New very, very, very, very long names for the brief Smith and West Street (and nobody really cared who Smith and West were, anyway). Name changes, and to hell with the cost, everywhere. Monumental and expensive new provincial parliament buildings where nothing but seats made in Italy was good enough for the bums that sit there. I don't want to go on, but wanted to motivate my tendency toward a possibly cynical outlook. OK. I'd better shut up now. Don't worry, nobody reads junk like this. There isn't enough time for that.

  • @DustBugsTravel

    @DustBugsTravel

    Жыл бұрын

    No comment is ever junk if it conveys a viewer's personal viewpoint and don't simply try to criticise without merit. You make very valid points and I do agree wholeheartedly that a church or other building which has fallen out of use, could absolutely be repurposed for a cultural centre at a fraction of the cost. It's also quite significant that a centre which must've been designed for the 'right' reasons, just can't seem to get finished because of corrupt contractors. That is sadly so typical of the South Africa we find ourselves in. The ideas and intentions are there, the number of (honest) people to actually deliver and execute those plans, are in short supply it seems. Therein lies the problem for me. 🇿🇦😥 You can explain about your ^^ as many times as you like, totally fine by me! No apology necessary! 😁

    @sicko_the_ew

    @@DustBugsTravel Thanks. :D I'm a bit tongue-in-cheek there, but I know I do tend to go on a bit too long. (I think it was Blaise Pascal who started one famous letter of his apologizing for it not being shorter, and explaining that he hadn't had the time to make it shorter. And he's right. Unless one is really pressed for time it is a bit rude to go all the way to possible TL;DR length. But I suppose that doesn't mean it's junk, just that I could be a bit more considerate of your time.) I do like your positive approach. Criticizing is so easy, and it often becomes an excuse for choosing helplessness when things can be done. If we all learn to keep at least some of the blink kant bo en die stink kant onder, it would make us more effective at making the most that can be made of these circumstances.
