S1 - Ep 164 - Pearston - A Small Town at the Foot of the Coetzeesberge!

I was taken on a trip down memory lane when I saw the old drive-in theatre on our way to Pearston. I absolutely loved it. This small town at the foot of the Coetzeesberge originated pretty much the same as most of these small towns in the Karoo, as a parish of the Dutch Reformed Church. I must say the church in Pearston was beautiful. I couldn’t get into the grounds because it was locked, but we could see that it was in mint condition. Driving through the town was really interesting, seeing the old houses, some in need of attention and others which were being worked on. The overall impression I got was that it's a town trying very hard to retain its former character. Then it was off to Turksvygrivier Safari's where we spent the evening. This place is fantastic. We had an awesome stay with an amazing view over a dam and an unforgettable sunset. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #pearston #town #easterncape #coetzeesberge

Your travels lend new meaning to the chant "Go Bokke Go": Kudus, Blesbokke, Impalas, Springboks, Angora Goats and many more. Indeed the remote scattered towns of the Karoo is classic "Far from the Madding Crowd" stuff but, Graaff-Reinet for example (the 200 or so national monuments notwithstanding), boasts an impressive list of celebrities associated with it that reads like a "Who's Who" which would be the envy of a big city. Yet sadly, few would bother to experience all that. Lastly, I was surprised that pork ribs were on offer. I thought mutton or goat would most likely land on the Braai grill. I suppose the Angora goats can circumvent the abattoir as long as they keep on growing mohair (ha,ha). Stay healthy and focussed. Till next time.

😁 Indeed, we're happy to follow the buck wherever they may take us! 🦌 As for angora goat on the menu, that may be a bit of a stretch for us at the moment. When it comes to food, we're not so adventurous. Not yet, anyway! 😃 We've had Karoo lamb several times in the past during our travels, but the pork ribs looked particularly good that day and luckily they tasted every bit as splendid as they looked! 🤤 We love the essence of these small towns and absolutely savour every single experience we've had and road we've travelled. We live far away from the Karoo, but it feels as if we come home to the Karoo every time, if that makes sense. 😊 Thank you for watching, we so appreciate that!

Don't you worry, we're completely on the same page as far as Maths goes. One of us struggled with it until Matric, but that's where it ended! 😜 We thought it the coolest thing to see this enormous drive-in screen in the middle of the Karoo, just wish we could've been there when it was still operational. 📽️ We're so happy that you've joined us on our travels. 😁

It was a fantastic sunset, we still often think back to that evening. 🌅 There are definitely businesses operating in the towns, albeit not many in some and informal a lot of the time. These are farming communities and we see a lot of farmers and their workers in town. With the roads rhey travel on all the time, I can only imagine the toll it takes on their vehicles, so they would need to replace them every so often. 🛻🚜 Thank you for watching! 😁🚗

Lots of country churches are like that. The minister from a bigger town has lots of small villages to care for so he divides the month and goes to them on only one Sunday or even a weekday as he still has to keep up with the services in his base church. My husband was anglican rector of Rustenburg and had Thabazimbi, Northam, Zeerust and Groot Marico as well as Swartklip and Mfedikwe another African congregation. Long journeys every month. But interesting to meet all the different people who made up the district. In the old days ie early 20th century Rustenburg parish included Potchefstroom!

  • @DustBugsTravel

How interesting! It certainly sounds like your husband had a busy schedule to get to all the congregations in the different towns. And we bet he had some amazing gravel roads to travel on all the journeys to the different towns. 🚗 We actually thought that to be the case and that the minister most probably takes turns to get to all the smaller towns in the area. It's still awesome that they get to have a service once a month though. It was such a wonderful little church to see too! ⛪
