The Carolina Hurricanes' first season in North Carolina was marred by inconsistent goaltending. To remedy the situation, GM Jim Rutherford signed veteran free agent Arturs Irbe, who had already become something of a folk hero during his time in San Jose.
While with the Hurricanes, Irbe led the team to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals while climbing his way up the franchise leaderboard in wins, shutouts, and more.
