S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Tells the Story of Today's Ukraine, not Russia (Obviously)

Ойындар

For those who have played the Stalker games, you may not have realizes that you have been told the story of today's Ukraine. Despite this, many have gone into zone with the impression that they're enjoying a russian experience; often being referred to as "russian Fallout." While modders from russia have been very important for the growth of the franchise, it is the lore, setting, and life in the zone that has set the foundation of the Stalker games, a foundation that is uniquely Ukrainian, not russian.
Of course, the projection of russian influence over Ukraine is what has lead to this incorrect presupposition, and while a decade ago a friendly clarification would have settled the issue, because of current events, namely russia not leaving Ukraine the F alone, it has become a much more delicate topic that needs udnerstanding.
My attempt with this video is to facilitate to mostly western audiences an understanding of the Ukrainian identity that makes STALKER what it is and how its culture today is represented in the games, and how future events were foreshadowed.
It's time to appreciate Stalker as the Ukrainian masterpiece it is, and while comparisons with Fallout are welcome and make for interesting discussion, attributions to russia are absolutely not.

@@deadset15-hrvavik17 Tell Russia to GTFO then. This was entirely their doing. "Brothers" don't dictate what economies they can align with for their own prosperity, "brothers" don't invade and annex territory, "brothers" don't launch cruise missiles at energy infrastructure to make them freeze in the winter without electricity, "brothers" don't grind cities to dust like Mariupol, Bakhmut, etc, "brothers" don't create mass graves, "brothers" don't do massacres like they did in Bucha, so on, so forth. There is no "puppet" here. It is absolute buffoonery to "both sides/either sides" this conflict. Russia is the aggressor, plain and simple. Any other spin on this is Russian apologia. Don't even put Russian people and Ukrainian people in the same sentence. In Ukraine, Yanukovych sent freaking IFVs to crush the protestors. You know what the protestors did? They burned those vehicles with Molotov cocktails before they could crush the barricade. At the end, Yanukovych fled to Moscow. Ukrainians have a fighting spirit, Russians do not. They are NOT the same people and NEVER WILL BE. One is a society that is young, and trying to find its place in the world. The other is a centuries old death cult empire that is rotten to the core. The absolute rot that is Russian society has allowed Putin to remain in power unchecked for more than a decade. Ask any of them, they will answer "oh I'm not interested in politics", or "I support Putin". This is the MAJORITY. This is their entity. They are not interested in politics, but in the end, politics took an interest in them in the form of fertilizers for Ukrainian soil. They deserve it. As a Russian myself I never tought that someone can think that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a Russian game or game about Russia. You got it all perfectly right and, as a title of a video says - it's obvious. Cossacks is a Ukrainian game too because GSC Game World is a Ukrainian company. Also Metro 2033 series is Ukrainian game too because 4A Games is a Ukrainian company, created by GSC ex-employees. Ukrainian game developers are just have crazy people that create masterpieces. It's strange that someone can say these games give you "russian" experience (Okay, maybe Metro does the scene is Russia after all, but we are not talking about Metro 2033) but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gives you Ukrainian or, if I can say so "post-soviet" expirience. Phew. Quite a lot of words, with my bad knowledge of English language. I'm sorry if i did a lots of mistakes. But I think a gave you my point of view. Oh and also. So many Ukrainian guys in coments. If you see this - please. Know that there is still a small (well a little bit more than small. we just can't do anything) amount of Russians that wasn't brainwashed by propoganda. Good luck guys and may the sky above your head be peaceful. Hope this nightmare ends soon.

It details authoritarianism pretty explicitly and many lines can be drawn straight back to Russia and it's regulation of borders knowledge etc... In the newer versions there is even a list of the things that the Soviet publishers tried to take out because it would make them look bad.

Btw, about monolith guys, i don't think that in 2007 there was a question about russians and their fanaticism and all this context was a subject for discussion for everyday life of an ordinary citizen. Times were just different. And yes, it's a fact that there always was people that wanted distance themselves from russia, like people that cared about the national identity but again, not a discussion on daily basis in minds of ordinary people and definitely in other context - more like cultural. So, i guess it's just a lucky coincidence. But now it's different times and if this same game would see the light today, people in russia would say how russophobic it is, and how it's an allegory on Z-zombies and supporters of war.

(though, minor correction, roadside picnic was technically a piece anti-soviet writing disguised within something the government at the time of its publication (circa 1970, I believe it was 1971 to be exact) considered "acceptable". It's a very long story and there's more to it than that of course, {and I do not currently have access to my copy of the book) but the updated translation (made by olena bormashenko) makes it a bit clearer and the foreword by ursula leguin explains it quite well, it's a very good read) I'd try my best to explain why but I haven't read it in a few years so the details escape me.

As Ukrainian i am not into free market stuff and i have few objections. Volya (freedom) faction are anarchists, not liberals. Democratic axe party is irrelevant in Ukraine and is conservative, not liberal, they hate gay people and migrants, etc, think of them as republicans. Both Russia and EU exploited and plundered Ukraine. Monolith then is more about EU, because they lure with "prosperity", but actual reforms they told us to do only worked to exploit ukrainians. Abolishing labour rights, privatization, land privatization, etc. But when we had proposed tax on capital which leaves Ukraine then EU and IMF screamed "NO" and was about to put sanctions on us (like refusing loans). And the same thing is doing russia, in 1991 both of them bought off many of our factories during privatization and just sold it for parts because it was quick money and it eliminates possible competition. I dont like the framing of EU as exactly "good guys", they initially was planning to leave Ukraine to die. Merkel and such was doing business with putin for all those years and many politicians in EU support putin even during this invasion. Many people in Ukraine are frustrated with how hypocritical and cynical EU is. We gave up nukes for this? Really? And now they say they cant sustain this much support for us. I am not diminishing their help, i am frustrated with all the politics involved in all of this.

I apologize for the necroposting, but when I watched this video, I must admit that your understanding of the political and historical situation in Ukraine is exceptional. Almost everything in the video makes perfect sense. However, there are some points worth paying attention to. This whole story with Duty went completely in the wrong direction. The fact is, according to stalker lore, Duty is a militarized organization that is partially funded and has direct ties to *Russia*. They carry modern Russian weapons (not even Soviet but Russian), have a cult of discipline and order, and use the military code that is an important part of Russian beliefs in the paramilitary organizations. They also deliberately speak Russian, even in the Ukrainian dubbing. The red and black flag has a radically opposite meaning in Ukrainian culture, in this case, the color scheme is just a coincidence. In the picture of the stalker's world, Duty is more likely Russian separatists and insurgents who want to annex and control the zone, imposing their own rules and regulations. Azov is a good example of a militarized structure in Ukraine NOW, but it appeared in response to Russian aggression, opposing military power and discipline to Russian one. As of 2007, there were no full-fledged military organizations in Ukraine, but there were more than enough of them in Russia. Ukrainian nationalists, held patriotic educational camps on the topic of guerrilla warfare, as was the case for the last hundred years. They despised the army, both Russian and Ukrainian, as it was seen as a successor of the Soviet, occupational army. Your view of Freedom as liberals and leftists makes perfect sense, but the red and black flag suits them better since the OUN and the UPA literally fought for freedom while using guerrilla tactics, not a full-fledged military machine. NATO guns, as a symbol of the chosen worldview, sniper rifles as the best weapon of the partisans - this is what Freedom really is. Fighters for the freedom of the territory from the tyrannical (Russian) regime, which is represented by the Duty faction. In other words, the war between Freedom and Duty is not a war of Ukrainian liberals against Ukrainian nationalists, but a war of Ukrainian liberals/nationalists against Russian mercenaries and insurgents.

This is a very well thought out and explained video. As an artist and writer that does everything from tattoos, books, game quest and environment dialog/design - there are many times that I step back and start to see patterns and meaning in the things I've made that were so obviously linked to aspects of my life and past/present experiences. I never really noticed it before I had started seeing a therapist who was also an artist and had learned about the psychology of art. When tackling deeper issues she would sometimes have me draw certain objects, or have me bring in work I'd been doing. Some of the ways I subconsciously inserted into things was kinda wild. There were also a lot of details and deep seeded things that seemed to come to light through my work. I only describe this because there are so many times that I hear someone say, "Just because those things line up doesn't mean they're true. I highly doubt the writer was thinking about all these things when they wrote the story". There usually isn't any arguing with this opinion either, because they simply choose not to believe how active the subconscious mind is in our moment to moment decisions and actions. But honestly, there is so much that we still have to learn about these parts of human consciousness. I'm blabbering now though. ADHD lol

Cuz me I like the games but they're so outdated visually and mechanically I would just like to play and update version of them kind of remastered. I just noticed all the new NPC models that look nice.

Wow! Monolith are Russians blinded by the Wish Granter.... As a person from that region this really fits. I wonder if it's just reflective of reality naturally or intentionally put in by the devs. I know the Metro series has these parallels intentional and you can see them clearly, but I never thought of Stalker in this way at all. Monolith and Malorus only sound similar to foreigners tho. Here you're seeing things.

15:00 you are damn right about people being shy about carrying ukrainian culture. People were shy to even speak ukrainian, because there was a russian empire and then soviet stereotype that only stupid villagers speak ukrainain unlike people in cities. villages speak almost exlusively ukrainain (those that I visited at least). I was ukrainain speaker as a kid till about 3rd grade when we moved to a larger city where I become russian speaker. Now I dont speak russian again (except when talking to russians I am still in contact with) Alo, what is that cool mod that you have played on the background (seemingly shadow of chornobyl campaign?)

2:07 it's soooo true, i laughed so hard. Living in Spain, i heard so many times "ey ruso" even after i told them that "soy Ucraniano". "Dile algo en ruso" or "como se dice en ruso" - this was the usual words to start a conversation with me. And honestly it didn't offend me at that time like probably it would now. The russian authorities, propaganda and their muppets, did everything so that normal people distanced themselves from them and did not want any associations with them. Honestly, thank you for your caring. I'm surprised how much you know about my country, it's not usual for western people. Even some Ukrainians know less. The developers kinda messed it up by using rubles as ingame currency. Anyways thanks for doing it, I was always upset about people thinking stalker and metro games are russian. The analogies in this video are pure gold, I appreciate your deeper understanding of the situation. Because in the west it's mostly "Ukraine good, russia bad" and there are few tin foil hat weirdos who think opposite of that. While the analogies are spot on I doubt those are all conscious choices made by the developers. Update: So after finishing watching the video, I am just blown away, you are spot on about everything what's going on.

Thank you Andrey for your insight. It is deeply appreciated. I do concern myself with getting things wrong because I'm afraid of misleading people for it, so your comment is very welcomely keeping me honest. I find your understanding of the monolith is very rich because you look to see it from the inside out, as my perspective is obviously from the outside in, with all the factions. It'd be interesting to find any point where our ideas intersect. In regards to Freedom, I did run into Nestor Makhn in my research but settled with representing the quasi-anarchical beliefs of libertarianism and classical liberalism (in western terms) that the Democratic Axe represents. My goal was to find parallels in today's Ukraine and the STALKER games that people like me who are outsiders of Ukraine can look to as a way of understanding where those ideas have ended up in present-day Ukrainian society, even if their manifestations in the present are found in organizations younger than the games. In other words, I'm confident that people who sympathize with Freedom would be very interested in someone like Yuri Hudymenko. I hope you don't find that slight deviation hurtful for when it comes to helping outsiders of Ukraine like me see Freedom as a part of Ukraine, as of course, I don't intend to lecture Ukrainians about their own society and beliefs. Thank you very much for you comment. It has certainly been a very fruitful read for me.

Interesting thing about the Strugatski brothers who wrote Roadside Picnic: When they were younger, they were pro-Communism and their work does have Soviet propaganda. Later in their lives however, they began to see through its cracks and heavily criticize it (i.e. The Doomed City). To reduce Roadside Picnic to Soviet propaganda is doing it heavy injustice since the main themes are more philosophical and humanist than political (Also because the protagonist is a rebellious criminal with no love for authority). It deals with our inner desires, our morality and empathy, and most of all: existentialism. How significant are we in this cosmos? There is some Communist symbolism in the book, but it is far from the main theme imho and the critical reader should be able to recognize it. I'd recommend the book, its a pity to shun something just because of political prejudice. Even the developers of the game must have loved the book, to make a game based on it.

The Stalker game series was never about politics and there are no political symbols in it. It was only about common roots. If you really want to put emphasis on the fact that it was made by Ukrainian developers, you should also known that GSC had a lot of Russians in it. Even today they have a lot of Russians in it. Because they are one people, and game in itself was made from one people. They are all coming from USSR and they are all Russians at a core. Because that's how we called Soviets even back in the days - Russians. The correct way to say it, is that it's a post soviet eastern game. Just like Metro series. It was mostly called as Russian game not because it was made in Russia, but because it was made with the very same cultural code we can associate Russia with. Saying that game was Russian wasn't supposed to be insult for anybody, because it was made by Russian people at it's core with their cultural code. Before the events of 2022, there was little to none who would ever consider to call this game Ukrainian, because it doesn't have Ukrainian identity code in it. What is Ukrainian identity code even look like? Hell, even the money in the game were - rubles. It's a Slavic, eastern cultural code very familiar to everyone including even most remote post Soviet countries. That was the setting of this game. Today this has political pressure. Only now when they are developing Stalker 2 they are making it very clear that game will be more Ukraine focused and there is a strong emphasis on the fact that it's Ukrainian game (even considering it is developed in Czech Republic which is funny). This whole thing is very silly. Game is still using Soviet infrastructure as it's locations, and if Ukraine doesn't like Soviet regime so much.. why are devs still using it? That doesn't make sense, right? Because it sells. That's just how it is. Stalker 2 is made by company from Czech Republic now, which have office in Moscow, and have a lot of working devs on outsource from Russia and other post soviet countries. So basically it's still using the post soviet Russian cultural code at it's core. There is just political need to have more strong emphasis on Ukraine, and that's why even rubles were removed. The last leaked build was purely on Russian which says a lot. So i think Stalker is an eastern post soviet game with cultural code of post soviet countries like Russia, Ukraine, Latvia and many many others. All people from these countries are familiar with this cultural code and they can tell you, that this isn't Ukraine alone, it's all of them combined as cultural code. And even Ukrainians are more familiar with Russian voice lines in game, because they felt natural to them. Even Ukrainians will miss them in Stalker 2. Hell, we all will miss them, these were iconic voice lines. Game should stay outside of politics but as every art, they are mirrors from their time. Unfortunately.
