S. Rachmaninoff. Piano Concerto no 4, op. 40, fragment (Spitfire virtual orchestra test)

Музыка

Hey there,
This is a fragment of the 4th Rachmaninoff 's Piano Concerto (1st movement).
I'm performing this concerto for the first time with an orchestra in March 2023 but I can't just sit and wait for the full experience. So I'm testing the Spitfire Symphony Orchestra virtual orchestra library - I bought it about a year ago, and damn, it's good. It's playing better than me so far, I'm still learning this piece but hell yes, it made me practice.
I'm planning to do a complete version during upcoming weeks - I'm learning so much while studying and playing all the orchestra parts myself. It's priceless to have this opportunity to dive into the full score and appreciate its beauty and energy inside out. It's a brilliant score, guys.
Another advantage of using a virtual library is a complete freedom of tempo choice. Slowing down and practicing any section in any tempo, with the orchestra, it's a dream come true.
I'm going to make the full orchestra track available when it's ready. Let me know what you think.
Software used:
Reaper DAW
Spitfire Symphony Orchestra Pro
OBS studio for screen capture
Davinci Resolve for quick edit

There’s always this great sadness in Rach as if he’s constantly reminiscing about the past. It’s as if there was a point in his life where he was happiest but was then all taken from him. It’s incredible just how well he communicated this in his music. Fantastic composer

I've always been drawn to this concerto ever since I first heard it with ABM. I actually prefer it to n. 1 and 2 - less pathos, more subtlety. There's often that twilight atmosphere (not the vampire series, the actual heure bleue), a bittersweet chiaroscuro, something mysterious and ambivalent. Also one of the whole repertoire's most enthralling climaxes in the second movement. Can't wait to hear the whole thing with Slava (but please do tame these savage trumpets) !

I'm sad I couldn't stay to attend your 2-piano performance of this concerto, but it was great to meet you and hear you play in person at the charity dinner two weeks ago, and thanks for signing my CD!

Technology at the service of art, for the quality of the work of Slava Gryasnov, genius pianist. It's very interesting, bluffing and effective. Hoping to hear more of that and listen to you in live concert with orchestra. Thank you for sharing ! 🌹🌹

I've used the same program to practice Rachmaninoff's second concerto, did you also start with a public domain midi file and plug each part into your VST? I found that super fast to get a "close enough" recording for practice and to fine-tune later.

No, I record all parts myself to understand how any individual instrument works as well as the whole score later on.

This is such a great tool for a musician. Plus, you get to "conduct" the orchestra yourself. Hope you don't get spoiled and it leads to disagreement with the actual conductor of the live orchestra!
