S O S - Hamburger Gravy - Feed 12 People With 1lb. Ground Beef - The Hillbilly Kitchen

S.O.S. - Hamburger Gravy. The Hillbilly Kitchen
S.O.S might not save our souls, but it’ll sure help your budget and fill your belly. I have made as many as 6 cups of gravy using a single pound of ground beef and fed an army of teenagers with it. This is a super simple, easy, fast meal, which makes it perfect for weeknight dinners. SOS is one of those recipes that are going to help us through the ongoing shortages and skyrocketing food prices.
The flavor is incredible, you can stretch it almost endlessly, and you can make it for any meal - breakfast, lunch or dinner. Every now and again Bret, an Army veteran, submits his supper request for S.O.S. and I cook him some up with homemade hash browns and scrambled eggs on the side. Our kids love it too. They are married now, and they cook it up for their husbands on a fairly regular basis for breakfast or supper.
Put God First!!!

Hi! I know this is an older video, but I just want to say how much I love you and how you present your content. Pure wholesome…. topped off with a Verse. Nothing can beat you. My mom died and left my 87yr old father alone for the first time in his life. In the 1960’s, he served our country in the USAF, with tremendous pride. I grew up with my mom making SOS because my father loved it so much throughout his service days. Well, when our mother passed, she had made her own recipe cookbook for me and my two other siblings. I’ve been a subscriber of yours for a while…. then tonight, out of the blue, this video of yours, just popped up on my reel. In the three cookbooks my mom made, not one includes her SOS recipe. My father is so lonely and depressed, thankfully he’s active, but he won’t help himself to eat causing him to loose weight, which he didn’t need to loose, as he’s always been slim. With this recipe video appearing just now, on my feed, I’m taking it as a sign from my Mom to make this for him. I think he’ll cry when I bring this meal over for him. Thank you SO much for sharing your recipes and for keeping our dear Lord in your content. May He bless you and your precious family in every way, every day. Much Love and Peace to you. 🎚🙏🏼♥️🇺🇸

Had this all the time growing up and it was one of my favorites. My mom had to make almost all the meals cheap and to go a long way. We had this with peas added in and put over toast. Kids today would probably think you were trying to punish them if you tried to make them eat this. Crazy how much times have changed. So many recipes on this channel take me back to when I was growing up. Such good memories thinking back to the days of large family gatherings, playing kick the can, climbing in the barn, climbing trees, skipping stones across the lake or pond, catching frogs, playing outside all day... the world really took a wrong turn somewhere along the way. Thanks for the great memories.

Yep, I was a cook in the Marines 77-81, and made good old SOS 30 gallons at a time and several batches each morning. I used garlic powder in mine as well as onion powder. I tried this recipe yesterday for my Texas born husband and my granddaughter. I am a German immigrant, living in the US since 20 years, a proud citizen since 2013. Well, somewhere in the comments I read that this is a navy recipe, "save our ship." My granddaughter wanted butter rice, her favorite, with it and that seemed fine to me. When my husband came home from work, I told him that he would get an old navy recipe for dinner that day called "Save Our Ship." He looked at me, looked on the dinner table, and said, "this ain't no navy dish, this is shit on a shingle and you forgot the toast." LOL I am still laughing because it was so funny. Btw. he liked the dish even without the shingle LOL.

I’ve also been getting into dehydrating meals and I feel like you could make this with “gravel” aka dehydrated ground beef, and dried ingredients including heavy cream/milk, and butter, bullion etc! And then you can put it on a think dry “toast” aka shingle that will hold up. Probably could even dehydrate or freeze dry so it lasts in the pantry or on the trail. Or wtshtf!

When I joined the Navy, I was one of the few guys on whatever base/ship where I was stationed that liked the stuff. I make it with ground beef, but I usually make it for dinner. So I add a little extra to it: chopped onions, diced carrots, and green peas. I'm the oldest of six children so we had a family of eight. Mama did not work a public job but she did work in the house. The old saying that a woman's work is never done is so true. Mom did everything from scratch..... the clothes she made..... blouses, shirts, skirts, socks and the food was wonderful. SOS was a main Staple in our home . Along with potatoes, a lot of dried beans, rice, homemade cornbread and biscuits and Cane or sorghum syrup. Dad retired from the military. When I got married I introduced it to my wife. Occasionally she will substitute and use bulk sausage instead of hamburger. I've always enjoyed fried runny eggs on top of my SOS. And you're right about the fat content because during the Depression that's the reason why the South fared as well as they did was because of the high fat content in their diet. Back then we always had true homemade lard. The Smokehouse is a handy thing to have. Back in the 40s, fifties, and sixties, nothing was wasted. I truly thank the Lord for all of his many blessings throughout the 7and 1/2 decades that I've been here on earth. Thank you Hillbilly Kitchen for your videos and for also sharing the word of God. And may God continue to bless us during these disastrous days that we no doubt are facing in the future. Look up for our Redemption draws nigh!

My husband introduced me to this dish after we met. My dad was a roast man, and I preferred spaghettios and ravioli as small child. I read about it in cookbooks, but that was it. We used ground beef too, instead of chipped beef, which is very salty. Since I was usually feeding at least two men instead of children, I used two and a half pounds of beef. If I ever have to serve teens or adults again, I'll use the beef bouillon to help them think there's more meat and help stretch it too. I still might use at least a pound and a half of meat. I love that you have the Pledge of Alligence in your kitchen, a great reminder of our original values too. We need to turn back to God in this country, too many people are being lured away by Buddha, Mohammed, Hari Krishna and many other false gods. That can't help them in times of trouble or heal their bodies or calm their minds when they have negative and hurtful thoughts. God bless you and your family.

Nutmeg is my favorite spice. I use it when I make soup or a dish my grandmother called Noodle Soup, which is a broth made with beef short ribs, onions, celery and spices. You simmer it until the meat is tender and then add your spaghetti to the broth to cook. When spaghetti is done it is served over boiled potatoes that you mash with a fork. The secret spice is nutmeg. Lol.

I served in the Army in the early 80's. Loved S.O.S. Still love it. I make Chipped Beef on toast, but I use corned beef in the packages. Adds a lot more flavor. I served in the Army again during Desert Shield/Storm in 90/91. Got me some more Army S.O.S. I do make that too.

I make my hamburger gravy with diced onion, a touch of minced garlic and a can of mushrooms. I use beef bouillon and flour and lots of water to make lots of gravy. I serve it over mashed potatoes, carrots and corn. We always called it “gravy train”. It’s one of my favourite comfort meals. You can really stretch the ground beef with this recipe. I’ve never had it over bread though. God bless you ❤️ and your family in Jesus’ name!

This is that meal we had so much growing up, I swore I would never feed it to my children. 🤣 Next week my oldest will be 27 and so far I have held true to that vow. Lately I have been craving it so I might be giving up on that childhood vow. Our Mom served it over mashed potatoes. Or egg noodles. Its yummy but we ate it wayyy too much.

Thank you again, Becky! Navy man here, SOS was normally served as a side dish every morning along with the norms: eggs, beacon, ham, toast, hashbrowns, and other foods. You normally has a choice of grits or SOS. LOL...the SOS was made with ground up mystery meat...probably leftovers from the evening meal.

I grew up with a Hungarian mother and a Puerto Rican father both grew up very poor during the depression. As a child we ate rice and beans most every day occasionally with some cheaper cuts of beef or pork ,hotdogs were always a staple and lots of cabbage my Mother was very creative. It seemed to be so bountiful piled on my plate. But now as a 55 year old man oh how I remember my mom working hard at that stove to make the best with what she had to work with and those are still some of my favorite meals to this day. Thank you for putting your videos together I moved to rural Kentucky as a teenager and a family had me over for dinner often, they had fried bologna and onions and potatoes. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast and how delicious and hearty those simple but filling meals were. And last but not least I thank you for that great testimony you gave from the book of John and how God can help us even through the worst of times and give us joy and peace I appreciate you Sister. I am now a new subscriber to your channel.

In Navy Boot Camp, we ate this almost EVERY morning and I loved it. They served it with scrambled "powdered eggs", that I wouldn't have eaten except for the SOS. I now cook it and put it over biscuits, which basically removes the second "S" of the equation, making it ... "SOB" :)

@@christinejohnson1884 I really appreciate your kind words, Christine. However, it would be remiss of me to not reveal the truth... I joined the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army and going to Vietnam. In the late 1960's an Army draft notification was equal to a death sentence to most of us. I served, but only as a way to hide in the Navy, unlike those brave young men who faced their duty and sometimes gave the ultimate sacrifice. I praise those men- not me- who fought hard and if they survived, returned to a hate filled public here at home, who spat on them for their bravery and willingness to die for our freedom. I appreciate your words, but I don't deserve them. It is those brave men who are the "unsung heroes" that should be held in high esteem. Thank you, Christine and may God bless you.

Thank you so much Miss Becky! I’m from a military family and I loved this growing up! I love it with a lot of black pepper as well. I used to fold my toast corner to corner and eat it. And my momma would also make mash potatoes so I loved scooping the part that escaped my toast into the mashed potatoes. She would have peas asa side as well. Thank you for making a budget meal.
