S&C TV | Gary Chillingworth | What to do when you suck (at air rifle shooting!)
Спорт
In this episode of Shooting & Country TV, Gary Chillingworth looks at what do when you suck all of a sudden (his choice of words!).
We look at reasons why your gun can start shooting like a blunderbuss, as well as the reasons we as shooters can hit peaks and troughs with our shooting ability.
We also look a human factors like nutrition and fatigue, and how this affects the body and, consequently, our ability to shoot accurately to the best of our ability.
If you've hit a block with your shooting and seem to have lost your mojo, watch this video and see if Gary can diagnose and help you to work through the problem.
(We are also back in the conservatory where the fateful spring went AWOL in a previous episode... let's hope it survives!)
Gary is running his airgunning vlog - At the Range with Gary Chillingworth - every other week on Shooting & Country TV, so make sure to subscribe to the channel and keep and eye out for his videos if you love air rifle shooting. It will be a mixture of air rifle reviews, air rifle shooting technique advice, and tips for Gary's specialist subject - HFT.

Pleased you got to the bottom of your accuracy problem. I’ve found with my own shooting it’s all to easy to over think things. When I’m relaxed and not really thinking about things to much I always shoot better.
Silencer... my Dad was an Ordnance Artificer in WWII. He knew guns from small arms to heavy artillery to ack-ack - and he knew how to make a silencer from scratch... or improvise one. Silencer.

In the states you can buy an adpter that fits on your rifle and then screws onto a new oil filter from a car. Works very well apparently.
I'm a hunter not a paper puncher but really enjoying and appreciate your videos, cracking tip on the piece of paper to test the pellet probe, top man
Whether you get your mojo back or not... keep it up...thanks for the videos....I'm new to plinking and the experience shows and the presentation is very...... "accessible"....👍👍👍

To check a scope is accurate shoot the box with the scope on a rifle you know is accurate….. At 15yds fire a shot into plain paper keep cross hairs on POI click UP 10 Then click 10 left fire, click 10 down fire, click Right 10 fire click up 10 fire click left 5 then click 10 down and fire if scopes ok it should go into the original hole of first shot. If it does you know scopes ok don’t need new one. Great video picked up a lot of good advice
Pilots use the IMSAFE acronym. Illness Medication Stress Alchohol Fatigue Eating Could work for us too.
A superb video Gary. Some great information with your good sense of humour! Thank you.
BRILLIANT , watched this BEFORE attempting to watch all 300 vids on the new Alpha Wolf ... glad i did ... very very good advice you've given out .. it must be a small world , coz I know " Bob " the ex navy seal .. Mrs LOVES your show , and trust me , shes not easily pleased ...
With regards to the pellet probe o-ring, don't forget that o-ring can be inside the barrel rather than on the pellet probe. That barrel o-ring may be damaged or even missing, either blown out or pulled out by a pull through (rare but it's been known to happen)

That's great info, thanks Mark.
If you have a WH100, be careful not to use a cleaning patch that's too tight. I did and I pulled out the breech seal. They are a bit of a job to put back!
Brilliant video. My shooting on my HW77 suddenly went crazy. Spot on for 5 shots then erratic rinse and repeat. But I was bob on with my HW100 This was what i normally experienced until I used loctite blue on all the stock screws. I found two of the four bolts holding the scope to the mounts were slightly loose. Now spot on.
Great video for us newer shooters Thankyou

Cheers Darrel, that was my hope. I wanted to do this video as its easy when everything is working, but getting to the bottom of a dip in form can be hard.
Gary, another great video. Thank you.
And what a magnificent 60 it was 👍
Thank you for another great video, Gary.
Nice one Gary. Great choice of topic and good content. Looking forward to your barrel cleaning video as all I do at present is try to remember to pop a few (usually 3 or 4) VFG felts through after dipping them in Balistol barrel cleaning fluid, followed by another 3 or 4 dry. And I do this perhaps only every 4 or 5 competitions.
Step 1: get a good rifle Step 2: get a good pellet Step 3: minimise your contact with both pellet and rifle Step 4: Point rifle at target Step 5: Pull the trigger with minimal contact. If any of these steps fail blame the equipment or wind.

Springers confound that a bit though. Some springers don't like shooting off a bag, which is the way I usually try to get a gauge on accuracy and consistency with a rifle. Springers are funny, some of them love bags, some of them will completely misbehave. It can be very difficult to get to the bottom of an accuracy issue.

Hi Logan, yes I'm sorry. I normally use a laveler mic, but for this video I was trying out my new radio mics. We will be going back to lavelers for the next video.
Some fantastic advice, Chilly. 👏👏 Top notch. Thank you. I own one of the eBay/AliExpress specials, a HT-X3006 and it’s amazing. Measures FPS, is more accurate than an FX chrono (measured against others at the club) and was only £23. It’s a bit of a faff setting it on the barrel but eBay also sell an adapter to make life easier. There’s also a WiFi version for about a tenner£ more. It’s not worth not having one. Especially if you tinker. 😃👍👍

Some of these cheep chronographs are very good. - Chilly
Hi Gary, just watched the video. I've just bought a tx200 for hft(usually use a mpr ft, but going to try a series with a springer), anyway I've been trying the gun with a silencer on off, plenum in and out and what a difference each one makes. Definitely more accurate with just the plenum in, haven't tried any weights yet though. What would you advise to try?
Hi, great video, thanks. Could you send out a link to the chronograph for £25?
Noticed my shooting got a bit bad in the warmer weather, think it's down to less layers and so heartbeat was transfering down the rifle or at least in the scope as it was bouncing 😂 is a softer butt pad the usual remedy?
good show thank you. Do you only have one springer? if yes why not just try some one else's rifle and see if you have the same problem. or let them shoot your rifle.

Hi. Love your vids. You mentioned clipping. I was asked to zero a fac air gun for someone and couldn’t figure out why it was soo inaccurate even at 15 metres. I looked at the silencer and it had like a pencil mark down one side. Clipping. Turned out it was a .177 silencer on a .22. Can’t mention any names cus it was bought off a very well known airgun KZreadr. It seemed like he just put it on not realising 😂😂😂

This is a terrible thing for the sport. If this goes through in the EU as well (which it will) the sport will be all but dead, because the UK is probably the biggest FT/HFT country, followed by the EU countrys. The US does their own thing, and I don't think it's big over there, Australia and Canada are so ridiculous with their gun laws that it's impossible for most people to get into the sport, here in NZ we're OK at the moment with springers, but the new laws are screwing over our clubs and ranges, and the sport is quite small here, so we don't have a voice. I'm worried the sport is dying. Governments the world over aren't keen on people doing shooting sports period, even 12fpe airguns. Australia and Canada banned airsoft, Australia banned paintball as well. It's a joke. I'm hoping there's a workaround if the UK bans lead. Perhaps mounting the targets in a box that catches the lead. Only thing is, they'll probably ban importation of lead pellets. It's time we stopped letting governments do this kind of thing.
Practice is key.
