In Japan, Ryujin - the dragon king, sea god and master of the serpents was not your typical airborne dragon that terrorised cities or breathed hellish fire. Instead, Ryujin was depicted in art as more of a sea-serpent - a creature that stuck to the waters as opposed to soaring the skies.

Well made video
In Korea we believed something similar. The dragon king, Yong Wang of the Eastern sea was said to live in his kingdom on the oceans floor with dragons who were also people/fairies. And during the typhoon/storm season he was said to travel to his palace in the heavens, and the wind kicked up would cause typhoons hurricanes and storms and other types of oceanic phenomenon. In ancient Korea virgins were said to be sacrificed to the Ocean God to calm the sea. The tale SHIMCHEONG GA tells about this. And we also believed in the same things as well with sea turtles and other sorts of rare sea creatures, and also whales were revered as well being considered sea gods. Even a form of the Sea God. Yong wang was also lord of rivers lakes moisture and rains. He was worshipped in the form of a jar filled with water known as a dragon jar.

That fascinating
Ryujin is clearly less petty and selfish compared to the Norse and Greek pantheons
Snakes, knowledge, Tiamat, coastlines and water being the source of chaos, I love mythology man!

but the thing about the Long type dragons of East Asia was that they weren't that much of snakes like of their European counterparts (I love the story of the King/Prince Lindwyrm btw) but rather they're like beings who withstood the test of time and gained their status (like the carp story who became dragon)... it's the positive side of dragons but in European much like the Prince Lindwyrm it's about shedding their scales but still the knowledge motif is present, but to all dragon archetypes their weaknesses or rivals were often those that could encapsulate/lock them up like cats (European heraldry of Lion against Dragons, Bastet and Apep, and there East Asian mythos Dragon vs. Tiger)
Oh I’m so glad to see a Japanese mythology video from you man. Your content is amazing and great to listen to while I’m working. Especially since I’m a mythology enthusiast.
Dragons have been appearing everywhere for me lately, very interesting, thank you.

That because you have a dragon, the universe is trying to tell you that you are a dragon raider.
How cool Japanse dragons, this topic is really very rare 😊👍
Dragons are so interesting no matter what culture they are from
Ryujin has it all half-human-dragon daughter, two jewels to control the tide, a coral castle, and snakes to spy on the land.
FINALLY!!! LET THERE BE DRAGONS!!! I am hyped, hope we will see more.

A series about dragons and serpents? Yes please!
Finally, Ryujin let's go. I wonder if Dragons are from another world that's why they can battle many supernatural and mythical beings.

@Your Drow Slimeologist Your manic demeanor would suggest that not I, but *you* are the cult member. All religions derive from a common memory. If I call a dragon a seraphim, it’s no different than a British person calling the trunk of a car the “boot.” Same thing, different name. Calm down, lad.
I love dragons and they are so majestic. I don’t view them as evil monsters

me too :D
The story of the fisherman visiting the dragon palace has some missing parts which is why it's pretty confusing like that guy became the lover of the sea princess and that the (comb) box symbolizes his soul, much like how Davy Jones' heart is locked
Dragon are cool
I love these beautiful creatures so much 🐲😍
22:25, that’s most gorgeous image of a Japanese man sitting next to a dragon.
It was really interesting I really enjoyed it
They exist to this day and are very, very real
Ahh ryujin dragon 🐉 king of the ocean interesting fact just like the bramuda triangle there's a dragons triangle in the Japan sea same type of phenomenon my guess is that the dragon palace is a part of lemuria that sank and become a underwater kingdom
What really makes me wonder is that almost every mythology has some shape or form of a large serpent or dragon. What is concerning is how did the idea or the picture of a dragon/giant serpent ever come to be and that too in almost every mythology.
Also did studying on these beings from the Japan sea there's a story of a hollow ship that came from the ocean this mysterious hollow ship is like the turtle ships from the dragon kingdom and out of the hollow ship came a tall woman pale white skin with long red hair she was holding a box like the one given to the fisherman. Ryujin depicted in human form has long red hair
If Ryu-jin is real, he had fun with the Mongolian final attempt to take over Japan .
Love the new subject!!! Keep it up mate!!
awesome first entry in the Lore of Dragons and Serpents thank you so much =)
Will you cover Tiamat from Ancient Babylonian myths in this series?
Reminds me of my own matron, the monster-demon Leviathan.
I really like various myths but it seems that japanese dragons didn't get much attention until Shenron was introduced
5:55 Evil exists for the same reason cold temperatures exist.
Excellent video as always do you think it’s possible if you can do a video on Yinglong who’s a Chinese dragon from Chinese mythology?
That's actually like today's weather and I like today's video from the
Finally someone is covering this guy. The dragons of Japanese mythology get no love

In that day, the LORD will punish with his sword- his fierce, great and powerful sword- Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea. (Isaiah 27:1) Leviathan(Satan) rules the earth you can call him World serpant(greek story) who decive the whole world.

I am always a bit surprised that we view all these things as the same umbrella "dragon" when they are so different. Its like comparing birds with sharks.
Finally, a video about the seraphim!
Great video
And then Japan's most famous dragon Gojira.
Can you do a video on the demiurge or yaldabaoth
Very well made
In new Zealand we have a water dragon called the taniwha
Oh awesome. Love this myth. Will you be doing the other 2 aswell?

@Your Drow Slimeologist I got to admit I dont know too much. I first looked into these years ago as a kid playing YUGIOH. In the game there was ( if remembered correctly ) suijin for water fujin was wind and sanga of the thunder also known as kazejin and maybe same as raijin as in raiden. After a quick look there are quite a few elemental gods and demons of this Ilk.
The Chinese dragons number of toes depends on who the dragon was representing, the Emperor or a Prince etc...
Ryujin is very potluck as a god of water
Ryujin has many similarities to enki.
GREAT
Please do a Video on Blue Eyes White Dragon
Morally neutral king, doing his own thing.
Would like to see a reference to Ryujin in the MonsterVerse. My guess is that in the MonsterVerse, Ryujin is actually another name for Godzilla (or alternatively, the deceased Dagon).

He would just got shanked by Godzilla and we all know it.
good work - look also "Baal lebt"
I just wanted to tell you that I loved this, but the real reason he turns him into a crane is because the shinto believed that cranes lived for 1000 years, and that turtles lived for 500 years. It can be likened to the story of Job in the bible where he was given twice what he had lost previously, but in this case instead of receiving twice the human life span, he received twice the life span of the turtles that he saved.
Always had nightmares of being trapped in the middle of the sea at night with mist all around, and seeing myself surrounded by that curly long tail and bubbles arising. Lost and doomed.
Wait until you find out Ryüjin is the Himalayan mountain range. Its head is under Tajikistan. Dragon bodies literally make up most of the land we live on.
I was expecting a Mesopotamian or Biblical dragon but this is a pleasant surprise
Please do Alduin from Skyrim
❤️❤️❤️
So that's where Ryu from "Street Fighter II" get's Ryujin from. lol

In every mythology there is a tale of hero crushing a serpent...u will find this in Bible (gensis) too
If that mad over a hook, imagine the rage of a net...........
When this sleeping Jörmungandr/leviathan/Sea Dragon creature wakes up and sees us humans mass fishing and exploiting its oceans .. it's wrath will be unleashed🐲🐉
You will remain in my heart, protect me take all my sins love u so much, love u so much dragon god, the personification of the sea and sea god as well
Al Salaam The Ryujin sounds like the Mami Wata people of coast of Ghana. It is not one being The Mami Wata or Kami Wata but is an extrateresstrial race of beings. a young woman from ghana was kidnapped in the 1980's and went missing for 3 years. When she returned she told that this group had abducted her & forced her to have children with her. My teacher in Islam told me that there are some seraphim who live in the water & some who live in underground caves.
