Ryobi Vs Ego | Battle of Self Propelled Battery Mowers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ryobi vs EGO Mowers - We have recently reviewed the Ryobi 40 volt 20" Brushless Push mower ($299.00) and the Ryobi 40 volt 20" Brushless Self-Propelled mower ($399) and in all the comments on KZread, there were multiple people who asked for the mower to be compared the EGO 56 volt Self-Propelled 21" mower ($549). We sat down and came up with a fair plan to compare the two brands in a fair manner.
First, The EGO 21" Self-Propelled mower comes with a 7.5Ah 56 volt battery that would give EGO an edge on runtime, but the 21" EGO Push mower comes with a 5.0Ah battery, so we decided to even the playing field and use a 5.0Ah battery when comparing the EGO to the Ryobi. NOTE: Because of our battery change, the runtime of the EGO 21" Self-Propelled mower will be less than normal. If you buy the kit, you will get better results.
They Almost Look The Same!
When you place the Ryobi 20" 40 volt mower next to the EGO 21" 56 volt mower, they look very similar. LED lights seem odd on a mower and both of these units have them. The battery compartments on each have a see through cover. Both fold up pretty close to identically and also have a single lever that adjusts the mowing height. Although the mowers seem to share some of the same features, they do not seem to share the same build quality.
The EGO mower has a dual wall plastic deck while the Ryobi has a deck that is reinforced around the front and back, but the sides are left as a thin single layer of plastic that is flexible. We have rubbed up against a tree and had the blade gouge the inside of the deck on the Ryobi. The Ryobi also has some loose wires where EGO has wires in a wire loom.
How Long Do The Mowers Run?
The battery runtime on any tool can vary, but on mowers we see a large swing in the runtime due to the height of grass cut, thickness of grass, species of grass, amount of weed, moisture content and temperature. In our tests, we used open lots to allow for a constant speed of mowing along with cutting the same height and moisture content of grass. One lot was recently cut with a normal amount of grass that needed to be cut and the other lot was let go an extra week, providing a lot of grass to cut along with some weeds.
In the first round, while cutting normal grass one would if they keep up on their yard, the Ryobi was able to cut about a 1/4 acre of lawn and the EGO was able to cut just over a 1/2 acre of grass on a single battery charge. (Remember we used a smaller battery in the EGO) This test was performed with no obstacles so more lawn would be cut in this test than a normal lawn.
In the second round, we started mowing the taller grass that had not been mowed in two weeks. Neither mower had issues cutting the grass, but both seemed to ramp up the speed of the blade to keep up. Since the amount of grass cut decreased, we found it best to count the numbers of passes that were cut by each mower. While cutting the taller grass, the Ryobi was able to make 14 passes and the EGO was able to make 41 passes. There was again a significant difference.

Great head-to-head video. You told it like everyone wanted it known. I have been having issues with Ryobi product build quality lately (their pressure washer) and 100% believe what you have reviewed. I have since bought E-GO products and do not regret spending more for the quality. Thanks for the review.

One other thing to keep in mind when choosing a new lawnmower is the size of your yard. No need for a more powerful and longer run time mower if you only have a small yard. Ryobi is lighter and easier to turn and batt lasts for several mows and recharges in about 90 mins. I have a small yard and use a Ryobi 20 inch, 4 amp hour battery and couldn't be happier.

A good honest review for those in the market. I personally went with Ryobi and without the self propelled option, i feel you get a longer run time and they are so light and easy to push anyways. Works perfectly on a 1/4 acre lot and i felt more comfortable that Ryobi would be around in 5ish years for replacement batteries. I also have to carry the mower up some steps between the back and front so light weight was a big reason too and the reason i replaced my petro lawnmower with a cordless electric. The Ego is the better mower but the price point for that 7.5ah battery is crazy IMO.

I purchased the EGo about 4 months ago and I love it. I have a relatively small yard so run time is no issue at all, I think I may have hit it twice on one charge a few times. My only criticism is less a complaint and more just pointing it out for potential buyers...it's rear wheel drive. After mowing the lawn for a few decades and always tilting the mower back with the drive still engaged while making a turn, it's taken some getting used to.

I have owned the Ryobi 40v 20” push only mower for a few years. It is a nice trim mower, but the battery lasts only 30 minutes and the charge time is a few hours. I already had a lot of Ryobi tools including a 40v weed eater from Ryobi so I bought the push mower for trimming. It has worked pretty well as a trim mower. Now during the Covid19 pandemic, my riding mower quit on me. Oh, I mow about 2 acres in the country. So I am using this Ryobi to mow the whole place. It takes 2 days if the grass is very short or 5/6 days if the grass is over grown. It is not so bad in these days since I have a lot of time. When I am able to get out and pick up a new riding mower I will. Thanks for your review, I have seen it before. A Friend was looking and I recommended the EGO unless they already had Ryobi batteries. He is very happy with the EGO. Oh by the way, the 5Amp Hour for each gives much difffernt Watt Hours since the EGO is 56v (280 watt- hour) and the Ryobi is 40v or (200 watt- hour).

Your review of these mowers is excellent! It was refreshing to see you put both machines cards on the table and give them a fair shake. I have mostly Ryobi battery powered gear. It would be an easy call to continue that down the line. Being able to use the 40V batteries on other equipment besides the mower is a plus for Ryobi. However, your candid review with your wise emphasis on TCO - total cost of ownership - vs purchase price is very compelling. I like both products and they each offer value. That said, I may go with the EGO. Your callout on the double-wall deck, wheel bearings, power and higher run-time with the EGO reveal it to be a notch above the Ryobi.

Hey Rick; Just wanted to echo your comments completely. I also have a gambit of Ryobi power tools / yard care stuff, and an absolute slew of batteries and charging stations, and I'm reaching the same conclusion. It also appears that the Ryobi battery on the lawnmower isn't the same as the LI batteries we typically use for hand power tools as well. While it may take the same charger, the lack of reciprocity also matters! And I'm really glad to see your comment too, as it acts as a confirmation, and I really haven't seen too many top comments recommending the Ryobi from Ryobi buyers.

As far as I'm aware, Ryobis 40v is dedicated specifically for their outdoor tools, I don't think there's a huge selection to choose from, if I didn't already own part of the 40v I'd recommend running away from them. They're only sold at Home Depot (aside from third party unofficial sales on other sites, but those usually cost even more), and they really don't have good build quality overall, several of the products have somewhat high failure rates. The problem with them only being at Home Depot is the less places a product is sold, the less chances of finding great sales and also generic batteries, which straight up don't seem to exist for the 40v system. The least impressive part of the 40v is their mowers, they don't cut that great, I have that self-propelled and it's as heavy as a gas propelled unit (meaning it's rather heavy for a battery unit), my old gas mower is lighter, the gas also cuts a lot better, the Ryobi leaves a bit of scragginess to the lawn several owners have also pointed out. Overall if you don't own part of the Ryobi 40v already, I'd recommend going with a different brand.

(I have a big yard) In the summer it goes just fine on one charge. I also will only use the self propel sparingly to increase battery life. My neighbor doesn't even know I am mowing my lawn. It's that quiet.

We bought an EGO +2 years ago after I injured my back and needed a self-propelled and lighter mower. Best damn lawn equipment investment I ever made! Quiet, light, durable. I'm tall and have a long stride and its nice to have a handle that doesn't make me stoop over and it's the only self-propelled mower I've ever used that I didn't have to set to full speed and still have it too slow. This would let me just about jog behind it, but too fast on any mower makes for a sloppy cut. Love how quiet it is also. Not much louder than a house fan on a very high speed. Really tall and/or wet grass will drain the battery quicker. Do yourself a favor and buy the quick-charger & bigger battery option. I've only run out of juice twice and it was fully charged again in under 30 minutes! It does come with a steel deck option, but as I'm not a professional lawn guy nor have a yard full of rocks, the plastic is very durable and makes it a lot lighter and easier on battery life.

Now, I barely get finished. Not looking forward to $300 + for a new 7.5 amp battery. However, I’m completely satisfied with EGO. Batteries recharge quickly! I have the weed eater and blower. Great products too, but the 2.5 amp batteries are on their last legs. Hint, like any mower, it bogs down in heavy grass. Quickly drains the battery!

Excellent video; very well designed comparison. It reassures me that I made the right choice in purchasing the EGO mower when I decided I had enough with the pollution, noise and maintenance issues with gas mowers. I don't use the self-propelled motor much at all - the mower is light enough that it's not necessary and I figure it will drain the battery quicker. (It wasn't clear to me if the tests were performed in self-propelled mode or not.) The reason I bought that model is because of the larger battery, which doesn't come with the push only model. I'm cutting upwards of 3/4 acre, so battery run time is key. The battery will last about an hour, 45 min. in taller grass, and I allow an hour for recharge. I can usually cut the whole lawn in 2 to 2.5 charges. I paid $599 at Home Depot in Nov. 2016, so it looks like the price came down in the year since then. Also, while the warranty on the mower is 5 years, the warranty on the battery and charger is 3 years.

I have an EGO Mower (not self-propelled), blower, weed wacker, and chainsaw. I could not be happier with these EGO products. The nice thing is, with exception of the mower, all batteries are interchangeable. Also, I get about 6-8 mows in of my front yard before I have to recharge the battery on the mower. No more messing with fuel, no more gasoline smell in the garage and they are much quieter than gas powered products.

I purchased a Ryobi 40 volt 20 " late last August and the first few times I used it seemed great. However lately I have found that I am getting 20 to 30 minutes run time while I have been told that it should be 45 min. to an hour. Also it quits on me even though one and a half lights are showing green on the battery. It takes a full three hours to charge the battery so that means I cannot cut my whole lawn - about 1/3 acre in one shot. As Home Depot has an excellent return policy of 90 daysI am thinking seriously of returning the Ryobi and trying out the Ego. Thanks for the great job you have done on comparing the two lawnmowers.

Batteries need so much proper care and maintenance, it's not talked about enough. There are few things that can greatly reduce its life. Like avoid charging the battery if it's hot, let it cool to room temp, not just the surface temp, but to its core. Let it sit room temp for couple hours, 3 to be sure, before charging it. In general, Battery technology is behind IMO, compared to advancements in other tech.

Tried the ego at my cousins place and it’s a nice machine. But for me, I got hooked on ryobi ecosystem due to a cheap used 40V weed trimmer and have the mower now as well. Yes, the ego is much nicer but I think the ryobi is a good unit as well. I will monitor battery usage but all in- battery mowers are much more enjoyable to use foe the average homeowner with 1/2 acre or less.

Thanks for the video I went to HD to buy the ego but before I got it I went around to the garden area where they often keep their returns/recondition items and unsold displays and I got an offer I couldn't say no on the ryobi! So just got it hoping I will love it and worse case I can sell it without a loss.

Thank you for the very thorough and detailed review of these two mowers. One topic that I didn't see discussed was the replacement costs of the batteries. Since these are consumable items, they will eventually need to be replaced. I did a bit of internet mining and found that the replacement (or spare depending on your needs) battery cost can tip the scales toward the Ryobi. Unless someone knows a more affordable source for the EGO, the he 5AH EGO battery is significantly more expensive than the Ryobi battery ($220 vs $140).

Costs are high for batteries, but modern battery chemistries last a decade or more, and don't suddenly die, they just slowly lose a bit of capacity over time. I certainly wouldn't make that a deciding factor. Additionally the the Ryobi battery is cheaper because it's less than half the total capacity (watt hours, not amp hours as the Ego is higher voltage AND higher amp hours) As shown in this video, for many applications, you'd need 3-4 Ryobi batteries instead of a single Ego battery.

Great review 👍. I have the EGO mower, blower, weed eater, hedge trimmer. Six batteries. 2 x 5ah and 4 x 2.5ah. with the high performance charger I never run out of power. EGO is worth the money I have owned my EGO gear since the generation 1 of the product. I picked up the batteries with the tools. My extra 2.5ah batteries came from upgraded blowers. Thanks for the video. 😎👍.

I owned both of these during the last two months. For me, there is no comparison, but your results may differ. I have a small 1/8th acre city lot. I first bought the Ryobi, because it had the walk at your pace feature. The variable speed depends on how far forward you press the handle. The Ego requires you to set the speed via a small red speed switch with your left hand. The first Ryobi walk at your own pace feature worked great until I completed most of the front yard. Then pushing it in just a little caused it to go full speed. At 74, I just couldn't keep up with it. I got it replaced, The second Ryobi worked perfectly, I finished the front yard and started the side yard. The self propelled went out entirely. I took it back and bought the Ego. The Ego finished the side yard and the back yard with no further problems. I've mowed the front, back and side yards three times with the ego. I find the little speed switch easy to deal with when I want to go faster or slower.

One more thing. The blade shown in the video on the Ego appears to be a high lift blade, not the regular blade mine came with. My Ego would not pick up leaves and the grass bag quickly got clogged up with grass and not completely filled. I ordered the optional high lift blade after my first cutting. Now it sucks up leaves, even the magnolia tree leaves. If you buy the Ego, check to see if it comes with the regular blade and buy the high lift version. Changing the blade was very easy and made a huge difference..

Thanks again for great reviews. It was good to try to level the playing field on run time but at 56 volts, the 5Ah EGO battery provides 280 watt hours versus 200 on the Ryobi. This is not a criticism but should be a consideration when comparing run time. Even when normalizing to a per watt hour basis, the EGO still outperforms the Ryobi. Your reviews are always my go to.

This was a great review, thanks. I bought a Ryobi 20" 40V self-propelled mower yesterday and wasn't able to do more than about 15mins and very little of my lawn as it had to be pushed before the blade would start moving (when I called Ryobi they told me it should & told me to take it back to Home Depot) and only then would it allow me to put into self-propelled mode - very frustrating process which slowed me down and after 15-20 mins I'd had enough of it. I just came to try to start it today and it hardly moved, the battery was showing only one green light and I have to put it on the charge again. I only have 1/5 acre but my feelings, at this time, are that I'll go out again with the battery is fully charged and if I cannot finish my lawn I'll take it back to Home Depot and get an EGO. It's a pity because I have other Ryobu tools but no EGO tools - yet.
