You actually don’t know the whole story including the truths behind this young man prior to this unfortunate event to be saying anyone should be ashamed. Unfortunately not everything is available for public knowledge that the people who lived it know that is blocked out. We all struggled with this incident and it is something that we, people who have been involved in this circus have to live with years later that have impacted us in a negative way. So unless you have lived it, you can’t comment on some second hand story.

I'll tell you right now, Ryan White and his Mother had no reason to lie about how horrible he was treated in #Kokomo #Indiana ... The only reason it became a "circus" was because the small minded people made it that way. To think some of those small minded people were people from their Church.

They make me sick! Fear of the unknown does not excuse violence toward the family and all of the harassment and disgusting names they called him. He was a child! A baby! He was only a little over a decade old! It wasn't his fault he got sick! So no amount of fear or misunderstanding will EVER justify that. Especially the way the adults treated him, grown ass men and women!!!! Not letting their children talk to him? If u are scared then tell them to be careful around him, the poor boy shouldn't have had to go through such cruelty in the last years of his life, if u can't love and support a fellow human being during such a difficult time then u are the lowest form of scum on earth. He has a foundation and numerous movies about him. Luckily he is still alive to this day. He did go through some of the things shown in this video and the movies obviously make it worse, but as his friends we never really left his side, even all the way back then in the 80s. Unfortunately now I hardly ever see him, but he is alive and well.

It wasn't specific to Kokomo, Indiana. The same story played out across the United States of America and Canada. Learning By Heart and Covering The Plague are excellent books that describe the stories of many people who became infected with HIV, suffered from AIDS and ridicule and scorn from their communities. It has been true of the victims of other epidemics too. I'm not defending the actions of those in Howard County, Indiana who behaved incredibly poorly. They really did make it a mission to make the lives of the White Family horrible. However, there were also very kind hearted people in the community who tried to rally around the Whites and provide them some measure of support and comfort. They weren't the loudest voices. They didn't win the day at that time. But they were kind, generous and brave. Today many people in that region believe that the broader community was unfairly maligned. They agree that a very vocal group who went by Concerned Citizens of Western School were ignorant and took thing way too far. They don't believe that it was representative of their entire community or the entire history of the community. It also wasn't the only thing happening in Howard County at the time. There were many social, political and economic issues that they were dealing with. The automotive industry was laying off workers. Both General Motors and Chrysler were large employers in the area. The steel plant closed. American farmers were losing their land. Which was the other major economic driver in the area. A tornado ripped through the area causing a great deal of destruction. A bomb was set off at the local court house in downtown Kokomo. This was a community trying to get back on its feet and portray itself as an ideal location for investment. It is not at all uncommon for communities to fear the loss of investment when epidemics of infectious diseases occur. When SARS hit Toronto the film and television industry was hit hard. Tourism faltered when the World Health Organization issued a travel advisory. The 1918 Influenza Epidemic has been known erroneously as the Spanish Flu Epidemic largely because Spain didn't impose the same war time censorship of news papers as other nations did at the time. Again I will not defend some horrible behaviour of people in Russiaville and Kokomo in the mid to late 80s. They truly should be ashamed of their behaviour. But if we don't make an attempt to understand what happened we won't see the signs and prevent it from happening again. Also keep in mind that Ryan's grave was vandalized three times! Not from some punks driving up from Kokomo to Cicero. Local teens from Hamilton County did it. After he was dead and posed no risk to anyone.

Actually no we don’t and won’t ever feel that way. Little was known back then about AIDS and parents were trying to protect thier own kids from getting sick much like parents do! If you have a kid who is a punk, doing things like bleeding on newspapers that he delivered to customers and spitting on people who unfortunately develops a horrible disease that is unfamiliar then parents are going to be scared that he would do something malicious to thier kid like spit on them. That’s why a petition was signed! That’s a story you don’t hear about! Not all parents kept thier kids from going to school with him, mine included! I had to continue to go to school with him after he fought to go back and I was a scared 6th grader! So yeah, I don’t feel idiotic for something we didn’t know at the time. The description of the video is a little misleading. Technically we are talking not about blood transfusion, but more specifically we should be referring to infusion of Factor 8 blood concentrates. The process is a little different and comes with different risks. When someone with Hemophilia infuses Factor 8 or Factor 9 concentrates it appears as a relatively clear fluid. The product is derived from the plasma donations of tens of thousands of donors. It's significant for two primary reasons: Firstly the risk of becoming infected with a blood borne pathogen is far greater. Instead of a single exposure you are talking about exposure to tens of thousands of donors. Secondly the medication is often infused at home by a parent or the hemophiliac. The second part is extremely important to understand. Hemophilia is a hereditary X chromosome linked disorder often passed on by mothers to their children. Women are more often carriers of this mutation while males are more likely to display symptoms of the actual disorder. This creates a great deal of guilt for mothers. Due to the prolonged bleeding times hemophiliacs often appear with bruises. Mothers are subject to leers and looks as if they have abused their children. At one point the Concerned Parents of Western School Corporation attempted to have authorities declare Jeanne White and unfit mother. Now imagine that you have endured this type of moral judgement and you know that you have now infused your child with HIV which has led to AIDS? That's terribly difficult for a parent. Then to be considered some sort of monster for allowing your child to be around others and subject other children to "unknown risks" it was pretty horrible for families of hemophiliacs. Perhaps what is most remarkable about Ryan is he pushed off the title of innocent AIDS victim. He objected to being thought of as a pitiful victim and had a great deal of sympathy for others who contracted AIDS through other means. In fact the gay community was instrumental in keeping his family informed about treatment options. Ryan writes about one such interaction with a man in an AIDS clinic in New York City. If you find these videos compelling then please go and read Ryan White My Own Story or Weeding Out the Tears. Both of these books are fantastic.

People were terrified here in Kokomo. At that time Doctors weren’t 100% sure what ways AIDS could be transferred. With that being said, yeah it’s terrible that it happened, but this is such an early time in regards of AIDS. It’s so crazy to think this all happened in my city.

I don't understand why Infectious Disease specialist/doctors didn't come forward to correct and incorrect beliefs that people were panicking over regarding the spread of HiV/ Aids to clear up the confusion. I have been living with HIV + now for 32 years. I had to address these fears of family and other people that knew of it. My Infectious Disease doctor would give information seminars on his time after working at his practice just for this reason. I have deep respect for Ryan White's bravery and what he achieved in the short time since his diagnosis. May God keep him in his care and be w/his family. Thank you Ryan ❤

Dr. Donald Francis from the CDC proposed a national awareness and education program and it was denied. Various departments at the federal level were told by the Reagan Administration to keep quiet. If asked by congress they were told to tell them that they had all of the money that they needed. At the same time the CDC was begging for more money specifically to do work on HIV/AIDS and awareness. The attorney general chose to use his own authority and worked with Anthony Fauci at the National Institute Of Allergies And Infectious Diseases to create and education package that was sent to homes across the United States.

Almost everything known today about the means of HIV transmission was known by 1982. 1982, people. I'm 70 years old and remember everything. Some American communities panicked much more than others. By 1982 it was scientifically clear that HIV is not an airborne virus, nor can it be spread through saliva. The citizens of Kokomo, Indiana had had this fact explained to them REPEATEDLY by public health officials but chose to disregard the explanation and to focus instead on their paranoia and desire for a scapegoat. Once you've discarded reason and probability, anything is possible. If homophobia had not been so deeply entrenched in much of small town American culture, the epidemic could have been handled more efficiently and with much less unreasoning fear.

“Ignorant parents “?! Really? You didn’t live that situation so you can’t comment on a movie that leaves out facts! Parents were concerned about a bad kid who spit on people for fun and cut himself to bleed on newspapers before delivering them to people then contracted a deadly virus that was virtually unknown and all of the sudden became a saint! You tell me, you wouldn’t be concerned?

While they were cruel to people infected, there was very little known early in the 80s about HIV/AIDS. Even doctors had no idea how it was contracted, how to treat it plus all the conflicting reports going public from health officials giving misinformation about the disease sparked panic. Kokomo citizens shouldn’t have behaved this way, but the health officials began this panic! 🤷‍♀️

The main problem was that for most of the 80s regarding HIV/AIDS it was way too easy for people to shrug their shoulders and say "That's a gay and drug addict only problem...not something for us decent folk to have to worry about". Sadly once upon a time rape was seen as a "sluts/whores only problem" and that "decent women" don't get raped...which of course is most definitely not true. Nowadays it's things that are needlessly made into a "race issue" (that is, its framed as if it's something that effects mostly blacks) when in most cases it's a "it can easily happen to anyone" issue. To paraphrase that Teacher's Bet episode of Boy Meets World, in situations like these, it's not good for just one person to jump up in outrage...we should all jump up.

We think we have eliminated this pathetic behavior. We haven't. Look how many people handled the pandemic. Hoarding things, pointing fingers. The parents taught the kids to fear this boy. They let their fear turn them into terrible ignorant fools. Ultimately fear of the unknown causes this. Perhaps doctors should have been transparent with how this disease spread.
