Ryan & Rose - Part 4 - We Had to Play Every Day (Ichiro my A**)

Спорт

With the recent news that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has decided not to lift the ban on Pete Rose, this conversation with Pete and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan is even more interesting. Today we release the fourth of eight segments featuring an unbelievable night with two baseball legends. The Kings of the Diamond Dinner, featuring the all-time strikeout leader (Ryan) and all-time hits leader (Rose), was held March 19, 2015 at the Marriott Plaza Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The dinner was the kickoff to H-E-B Big League Weekend, an annual two-game Major League Baseball spring training exhibition series held at the iconic Alamodome. It was a great night with two legends recalling their epic battles on the field, sharing stories about baseball’s colorful past, and their insights on the game today and the players that play it. Come back next Wednesday for Ryan & Rose - Part 5. Special thanks to Quarter Moon Productions. All rights reserved Ryan Sanders Entertainment.

I was eight years old. My little league manager told my dad that he liked my hustle, a lot. "He hustles like that Red's rookie, Pete Rose." Yep. Pretty close to 60 years ago. MANY times in my life I was complimented on my drive, my energy, my work ethic, and well, my hustle. I like to think I have an extra TWO gears, in how I take care of my business.

Maybe, but I still don't see guys leaving until nobody wants them anymore. They even switch leagues to DH, and left handed relieves can last forever. Let's not forget Pujols is over 20 and some others. Guys will still play as long as there is a roster spot and they are able to. The real problem is having the talent to stick in the bigs at 19-23, then avoiding serious injuries for the next 20 plus years, It's not leaving while you can still play.

Pete Rose was a great baseball player. In 1989, after being caught gambling on games his team was playing, he agreed to a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball in keeping with the rules he violated. 15 years later he admitted that he did gamble. The lifetime ban means he is not eligible to enter the Hall of Fame as long as he is banned. It isn’t a question of popularity, his ineligibility is a consequence of his breaking the rules and agreeing to the ban. Other players’ behavior, such as steroid use, has no bearing on Pete Rose’s eligibility for the Hall of Fame either. Some people seemed unclear about his status.

The reason they called Pete Rose "Charlie Hustle" is because during a Reds/Yankees spring training game Mickey Mantle hit a homer, it was (in Mantles words) a hundred feet over the fence but Pete still tried to run it down and jump over the fence to catch it. When Mantle got back to the dug out Whitey Ford said "Did you see Charlie Hustle trying to catch that ball?" When he found out they were calling him Pete said he like the name.

Neither one was a particularly impressive offensive player, their slash lines were comparable. Pete was the marginally better offensive player, but Ichiro was clearly the better baseball player. Pete played all over, won two gold gloves, and Ichiro won 10 in a row. Pete was a horrible base stealer, Ichiro was an outstanding base stealer. Boggs and Carew were better players but a little less durable than Pete and Ichiro. Pete was a stat compiler. You would be hard pressed to find a worse season turned in by a regular first baseman in all of history than Pete in 1983, when he slugged .286 in 555 AB and Mike Schmidt developed back problems from carrying Pete for 155 games plus the postseason.

maybe. But now we are speculating. Hell, I may have been the greatest baseball player in history, but since I've never played baseball it's all speculation. Also if Ichiro never played in Japan, he would have started in the US in the minors like every other player. you can look at this two ways, either Rose is right and Japan is a very good AAA-ball so his hits don't count the same as Rose's -- OR -- Japanese hits do count because it's professional baseball. And if that's the case, Rose's professional minor league hits count too and his total rises to around 4800 hits.

When Ohtani reached free agency after the 2023 season, heading toward his second AL MVP Award in three years, it was a foregone conclusion that he would set a record for the largest contract in MLB history. Many estimates had him approaching or exceeding $500 million and perhaps even challenging $600 million. Even that turned out to be low. Ohtani's deal nearly doubles the previous record for total guaranteed dollars on a new contract, and perhaps that's appropriate given that his two-way status (although elbow surgery will keep him off the mound in 2024.)
