Ryan and Fortnine are TOTALLY INSANE.. Well not really haha. I'm making a point here if you stick with me for a few minutes and probably not the one you think I am. Ryan Sir Fortnine did a video saying that the pads or armour in your motorcycle gear is useless and you might as well remove them. I have a different opinion or direction I'm going and it has a lot to do with how insanely hot it gets here in the summer. Most riders wear no motorcycle gear at all. They prefer to squid it up over wearing a jacket to try and stay cooler. But I know a way that might work for them too if they're willing. Fortnine Video • Why I Stopped Wearing ...

My takeaway from Ryan's video was that he was taking a jab at the armor manufacturers for only making and selling armor that only offers marginal protection and seemingly only really exists to improve slide ratings. Since the armor makes the gear less comfortable, especially off the bike, he says he will be taking the armor out of his casual gear and riding without it. I believe he did this largely to emphasize that the soft armor in most riding gear isn't as protective as many people seem to think that it is (and because it gets people talking). I still use the armor in most of my gear since it will make smaller bumps something I don't even really notice (I've only crashed offroad but dirt and roots can still hurt) and because the slide protection is allegedly much better with the armor inserts. I live in Texas also so my gear is usually mech and textile so I feel I need the added slide protection. I skimp on the armor with the riding jeans I commute in and on a kevlar riding shirt I have as I spend a lot of time off the bike wearing those.

I have laid my bike down going 80 and slid across the pavement for quite a ways before coming to a stop. I was a new rider that got a little arrogant, but I was wearing armored gear and instead of scraping my skin off on the pavement, I had the extra armor to sacrifice instead of my skin and ended up getting the wind knocked out of me, and a bunch of bumps and bruises and that's it. Paramedics were baffled I wasn't dead. Someone telling me that any sort of protection isn't worth it instantly loses all credibility with me. Armor and protective wear is cheaper insurance than a bunch of hospital bills.

At low speeds I think armor is good, but doesn't do much if you're going highway speeds. I wear full body armor like the ones in this video when I'm riding enduro and I know I might fall and tumble down a rocky hill, but on the street it's much more important that you're streamlined and will slide without anything snagging.

If I slam the ground at 80mph I don’t really expect the armor on my arm to keep me from breaking my arm. However, I’m 40 years old. It takes me longer to recover. After I hit the ground at 80 and break my arm I’m going to tumble. I’d rather not be nursing a broken arm and a ton of bumps and bruises that a few pieces of armor could have helped me with.

I think my biggest issue is Ryan such a huge voice in the moto community and he knows the impact he has but he cherrypicked data and didn't even reach out to the researchers who initially did those studies. All of them disavowed the video. Also when you crash and have a spinal injury from the impact, abrasion will be the least of your worries lol. If you care about safety and actually want to follow the research, airbags are the way to go. They're just expensive, but more justifiable when you consider cost of missing work, medical bills, etc. As a dualsport rider I do follow your approach to gear. For those that are concerned about abrasion, the adventure spec super shirt is a product that is basically mx armor but with an abrasion resistant layer. It's ce AA rated, which is probably the same rating as most people's jackets. It's gonna protect you while flowing air. It's pretty pricey but it does save money when it comes to layering. If it's cold you can just throw on a parka or a hoodie or whatever and you're not losing any safety aspect. You don't need to pay for moto specific gear and pay the markup that comes with it. Just something to consider, I wish I knew about it when I initially bought my armor.

Great video and suggestions for making it work while still being protected Jake. The scar on my arm proves to me that armor counts and shouldn’t be just discarded. I was hit and rolled, something on my bike broke and punctured the armor and my jacket and took a chunk out of my arm and left a small hole near my elbow. I have no doubt if I wasn’t wearing an armored jacket I would have lost my lower left arm. I think I understand what Ryan is trying to say, however I’ll disregard it. Even in the TX summer sun lol. Great thought put into it and I’ve been looking for alternate considerations like you’ve described for the same reasons. Thanks for more ideas!

@@TheGardenSnake Ryan made very good points and it appears you missed them. His actual gripe was with manufacturers doing the bare minimum. His second point was that people will and do think a lot of the products out there protect them more than they actually do. Third, it was implied that you as a rider should really examine how good your gear is. But what did you do? You focused on him removing the armor. Generally Ryan does videos that can and do make people think. But that one was just too deep for people to grasp.

What the hell is that insurance stuff? Over here out east theres the society of automotive insurance (loose translation) wich is more or less an american dmv but doubles as a provincial insurance for everyone that has a registered vehicule. On top of that, you are required to have personal insurance in order to be legal on the street. That one you can freely choose whatever company you please. So for example, if you get in an accident and you are physically hurt, the provincial insurance can pay for your body damage lets say, they can also provide income if you are hospitalized for a long period. Meanwhile your personal insurance can do this with proper coverage AND they can pay for property damage wether its your property or someone else's like if you destroyed a road sign or simply wrecked your bike in a ditch or even banged up someones car. Thats very crudely explained mind you, there's much more depth to it. So im incredibly curious as to what kind of fucked up system is in place out west according to mister snakes explanation

Think hard plastic vs d30 needs to be a different debate all together... That said.. I have slid at approx 40mph with the armor out of my jeans but still in my jacket.. and that's how I'll keep riding. Ended up with a bit of rash on my knee but otherwise fine. Everything needs to be a balance.. considering most Americans don't like any gear at all, think I'm doing pretty good in full gear with just no knee armor lol😅

2:34 Well he lays out the benefit as being about the balance that we all as riders have chosen to personally find between being safe and enjoying our time alive. But I would go further and ask what is the benefit of a trapeze artist wearing nothing but their underwear, surely a helmet and steel toe boots would better protect their head and toes from a fall. Why does a stunter wear plimsols and bmx gloves.

Yeah my takeaway from the Fortnine video was just that foam (not the hard plastic) armor doesn't help as much as you would think and that we should all ditch the back protector and replace it with an airbag. Of course though other people took from that video, "oh armor is useless, good fucking riddance" because this is the internet and everyone interprets videos differently which is a good enough reason to call Ryan's video stupid still. Plus Jake's video is more about how good this different type of protection can be in the summer.

If your bike blows into pieces when you wreck, and it's made of metal, how much do you think some plastic is actually gonna do for you. This isn't football. Lol and people still get FUCKED UP in football, being hit by just another human, who is also wearing padding.. all you need it rash resistance, anything more is just nonsense, it won't protect you much more at all. Btw have you seen a slider I after a bike has gone down on it? Will go from four inches down to 2.5 inches long after a slide. You don't wear that thick of gear. Or that hard of a plastic. Critically think about it. Yes, gear is good to wear. But at some point you're wasting your time.
