RWD Raptor? Why? LEGO Technic 42126 Ford F-150 Raptor detailed building review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After the previews and the prototype demos here is my full detailed building review of the LEGO Technic 42126 Ford F-150 Raptor. This is a nice build but has some fundamental flaws, so the overall feeling is quite controversial. Let's dive in the details with the review!

I wish modern technic cars were more like the 2011 supercar set number 8070. That set had almost the same amount of pieces, but came with an included battery box and a motor, with a distribution gearbox to control four motorized functions. The rear opening wing, the front opening hood, left opening door scissor mechanism, and same for the right door. The car also included the basic functions of steering, suspension, and a drivetrain connected to a fake piston engine. I mean, 100 USD is a great deal for the raptor, but 140 euro is absolutely overpriced! The 2011 supercar retailed for $120 and even adjusted for inflation, it still wouldve been a way better deal than the ford raptor at 140 euro

  • @jokecenter9138

Yeah, same. Now motorized sets cost a lot of money so I didn't expect this to be motorized when I heard it was 100 USD (even basic ones with drive/steering like the Top Gear Rally Car and the Off-road buggy cost 130 USD). Sets like 42128 with a lot of functions and pieces for a good price are selling like hotcakes right now (as RacingBrick said), so I think LEGO should sacrifice a few functions for some motorization and create a set with 4 motorized functions controlled through a gearbox (like the Osprey, function-wise), it would definitely be one of the best sets of the year if it were reasonably priced (which I think the Osprey was if it were not cancelled). Honestly, I don't know about the Raptor's price controversy, maybe Ford wanted to make sure that 42126 would sell well in their home country (again like RacingBrick said)?

Great review, you got the point perfectly! (As always) Your reviews are getting better and better 👌 Just yesterday I was thinking about the current lego technic situation. It's so sad in my opinion. Let's take for example the old good 9397. It cost only 120€ when it was released. It had only 1308 parts but it had the basic manual fuctions (hog, engine, doors...) and 4 mototized functions! 4! It also had a cool b model with the same amount of functions. Another impressive feature is the size. That set was quite big and looked impressive even if it only had 1300 pcs. Nowadays if you want such a big set with such a lot of functions you need to spend at least 250€ (yes 42128 costs less but it hasn't any motor). One last thing: I think lego is focusing too much on exterior, great panelling and branded models, but where are the multidirectional gearboxes and other complex functions? The last set with those was 42082, back in 2018, (I don't count the Osprey because it was never officially released). That's a major talking point to me, please Lego, bring back the real Technic sets🙏

Your analysis is spot on. The Raptor is an incredible vehicle with overwhelming appeal. I haven't bought any of the flagship Bugattis (ugly cars and not relatable) but I would have easily gone for a flagship Raptor. The fact that this isn't even 4wd is pathetic. Rating this as 18+ is mystifying. I built 8448 supercar (far more complex than this) as a 10 yr old with 0 issues and was comfortable enough with the build to modify and motorize it. I'm surprised Ford even permitted LEGO to release a 2wd Raptor. Then again, the Speed Champions Raptor was an ugly chonk and they let that one go too.

As more a Creator Expert builder than a Technic builder I feel I'll appreciate the smaller building scale more than most. Having built both the Defender, and the Rally car I personally felt they were scaled much to large to really display properly anywhere, though this for me is the perfect balance of size, as well as about as much functionality as I would ever need in a display model. Agree about the 18+ being inappropriate for as simple as it looks in comparison to even the Heavy Duty tow truck from this year or even Zetros which is strangely enough is also a licensed vehicle but doesn't carry the 18+ packaging. Flaws/pricing aside this still looks like a really fun build/display vehicle and will definitely gat at some point.

I've only been into technic for about a year, but when I was younger I got a few sets and they were great. I got the extreme offroader, the bucket truck, the fire plane, and the tracked loader and they were all great, even though they didn't have licenses and weren't official vehicles, and I think that is kind of making the line kind of poor. The unlicensed sets are fine, and they make it so the sets dont have to be perfect shape because they arent based on a vehicle that exists already. I love sets regardless of whether they are real vehicles or not.

Lego is running the Technic line into the ground with the overwhelming focus on unnecessary licenses and reduced amount of functions. It's like they're transforming it into part of Creator Expert, which is mind-boggling and sad to see them destroy a line with over 40 years of history this way. Not to mention that the one truly interesting licensed set was cancelled exactly because of said license, whereas without it the set would have been perfectly acceptable as a generic rescue vehicle.

Dang, such a well-thought out and in-depth video! You cover so much beyond just the one set in front of the camera, but none of it feels like it's irrelevant sidetrack rambling and instead totally relates to the main topic at hand. Amazing job on this one Balasz, this has got to be the most informative LEGO review I have ever seen! How difficult do you think it would be to add the 4-wheel drive to the base model of this set? I'm mostly talking about the modification process and less about how many extra parts would be needed, most of us have plenty of beams, axles and gears anyway. I am quite impressed by the look of the model, just the lack of 4WD and the price make it less attractive. If RC modding isn't too hard I may end up getting this one on sale because it seems like a pretty capable vehicle to me (good ground clearance (couldn't see if it's the case below the axles too, but I'm pretty positive about it) and wonderful suspension).

I totally agree. There is nothing wrong with simplistic builds as some kind of (very slow) evolution of models like the 42123. But the pricing should be as reasonable as it is for the 42123. ~6 c PP -> 80-90€/$ for the 42126. Would sound like a good and cool looking "starter pack" to me... but for 140€... nope. That would not fix the missing AWD of course. Eventough RWD is paleontologically correct xD.

From what I have seen, it appears that the licensed sets do not have B models. I can see how this makes sense, because a Ford product, for example, probably should not have a non-Ford B model. I really like the set but for £130 I don't think it's worth it especially as the defender and the creator 911 are cheaper. So it's gonna be a no from me unless they drastically reduce the price in sales

in UK price per brick is just too high for the functionality. The Red pickup truck is also overpriced for a non-branded model - which makes the new T2 Camper the best new set out.

It is most likely at a higher cost as this truck is usually known to be an American staple. They probably know that they will not sell as many in Europe so to combat this they increase the price.

Doubt you’ll see this, but is it just me or it doesn’t roll well? I haven’t built the actual set, but I’ve built two Alternate models from it and doesn’t appear to be rolling well. Not sure if tires related or whatnot.

In the us its 100$ which is pretty good for the peice count the hog steering is nice and the v6 is cool to but its not 4x4 it looks cool and it should be more like a 14+ Set So i might get it in a few years before it retires

Please do an rc mod to it! If you used buggy motor it would so cool. It would basically be a baja truck because it's rear wheel drive.

I just got this set on sale here in Canada. Was happy with the sale price and since it's only my third Technic build, I'd still have to consider myself a casual builder. I have the new Batmobile from The Batman 2022 and Dom's Charger as well. Had fun with all three sets, and for me, that's good enough!

The truth is the raptor primarily runs in RWD and only runs if 4 wheel drive during offroading or when stuck in sticky situations. Using the 4 wheel drive at all times would heavily damage drive train, perhaps beyond repair in some cases. So the technic variant is basically simulating the raptor in the mode that it would be running in 90% of the time. This model would be even less realistic if it had 4 wheel drive. So unless lego had some mechanism in the model that would allow you connect and disconnect the front axels from the engine this is the more realistic version.
