RVK Newscast

Over the last three days, Iceland has introduced new border policies and domestic restrictions to counter the spread of COVID-19.
Also harmful emissions from the volcano are drifting once again across Iceland’s capital region, and a warning has been issued to residents.
John Pearson walks you through these stories-plus the strange tale of Reykjavík’s misplaced crustaceans-with Art Bicnick behind the camera as usual.
For a limited time we're offering walking tours of Reykjavík guided by Valur and Bjartmar Alexandersson, (co-presenter of The Icelandic Perspective). If you want to meet the guys - and Pollý - click this link: gotravel.grapevine.is/grapevi...

Well, thank you John for that pleasant romp through an actual forest; something rarely seen in videos of Iceland. Lots of important breaking news happening there too I see! 😁 . . . Please keep the world abreast on that gnarly crab situation, as well. One solution would be to eat them maybe? Anyway, stay well gentlemen and a shout out to Art for his masterful use of the camera, he always makes sure he captures your "good side". 😊

I spent 1969 and 1970 in Iceland and you are probably much better at pronunciation than I was. At a campground on a holiday weekend some Icelanders taught me a phrase and had me say it to every Icelander passing by. It was "gefta mer að drekka" and I could hardly stand by the end of the night. Great times there!

Thanks for the latest news on Iceland (I visited too long ago - 1996). The forest has certainly grown a lot around Perlan since 1996, great to see. I am just about to come out of our 5th pandemic lockdown here in Melbourne, Australia quashing Delta variant outbreak this time, but we are still way behind Iceland with our vaccination rate (about 30% fully vaccinated). There is a certain similarity in Australia and Iceland having a relatively effective Covid pandemic response, so interesting reading your news on July outbreak in Iceland.

I am a meteorologist. Volcanic gases can hug the ground under stable air conditions and can combine with moisture to create volcanic fog, known as vog. This can create respiratory problems, which is why (most) volcanologists wear gas masks when taking samples from volcanoes. A good stiff, sustained breeze could clear things out, at least temporarily.

Here in Connecticut USA month ago 45 new cases for 7 day average to today 220 for 7 day average. It has been pretty much back to normal here other than shortage of workers in restaurants with increase in average we'll see.

And- b) HOW ON EARTH did he go from that wonderfully-framed tree shot at 13:20 THROUGH the branches without a bump??? We've assumed a Steadicam has been used but - is he also using a Drone as well??? Are trained Falcons with Go-Pro's attached involved? (LOL) WE DON'T GET IT! PLEASE - for the sake of (what's left of) our "COVID-SANITY"... HOW DOES ART DO IT??? (It's a PLEA.)

Hi Larry - glad you enjoyed your visit! Indeed, possibly there is a story there. But a simple explanation is to acknowledge that - as wonderful a place as Iceland is - it's still a complex society with its share of problems. Similar factors to those which lead to property damage anywhere in the world probably apply here too, albeit perhaps in different forms. On the plus side, the city does boast some amazing graffiti art murals - a very different thing to the simple tagging to which we imagine you refer.

@@itrthho Agree, but now it is these antivaccers, antimaskers and covidiots to make it last forever, just because they think their "freedoms" have been infringed upon and they need to party and go on holiday in a pandemic!🙈🙈🙈💩💩💩

If you are vaccinated you shouldn't have to worry about unvaccinated persons.

@UCHfJd086NQs89A95kG6NSFw I am 74 and do not "want to party." You are making some wrong assumptions and I resent being called an idiot.

To be fair, it’s not just the crazed anti-Vax or anti-mask crew. Many people have been adhering to the precautions, getting vaccinated and wearing masks, and still catching the delta variant and unwittingly passing it on to others before they know they have it. Sure, the anti-mask idiots don’t help the situation, but this is a particularly contagious strain, and further mutations will occur that will doubtless be even more contagious.

Herd immunity has always worked for humanity, otherwise, we would not be here. Restrictions make the flu worse because it lowers natural immunity.

Close your borders. Stay safe stay healthy. Here in New Zealand we have closed borders to most of Australia now. Like your version of grapevine.
