RV Slide Out Repair - Replacing a Faulty Electric Motor Assembly (Lippert 18:1 Tuson Motor 125802)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

UPDATE - Tuson RV Brakes LLC website now lists the motor and clutch gear
Clutch Gear - tusonrvbrakes.com/products/ge...
Motor - tusonrvbrakes.com/products/co...
In this video, I replace my Lippert slideout electric motor assembly, including the gearbox. I also explain why my initial repair didn't last. A few months back, I replaced one of the gears, and it worked for a while but has failed again. The problem is that the clutch gear was also defective, leading to the other gear failing. I could not find a replacement clutch gear, so I had to replace the whole motor assembly.

Hi Ray. it's been a pretty wet and windy weekend along the coast, but it's getting nice again. Anyway you haven't done many maintenance videos lately, and I was wondering when the last time you replaced your water heater anode was. And what is your process.

Thanks Ray for an informative video, glad to see you keep the Cougar sliding. I've had 3 5vers with slides system, hydraulics have been the most reliable for me. My KZ had a gear drive via rack and pinion which always seemed to fail at the most inopportune time. I eneded up converting to a Venture linear actucator which eliminated the pitfalls of the direct drive rack and pinion gear system. YMMV Happy Camping.

A great resource Ray. I've had the pleasure of slide motor behavior modification session and or a manual attitude adjustment or so in some less than desirable weather conditions. Generally speaking my learning curve has improved due to a certain KZread personality. He is the best. And his well read demeanor of calm, cool and collective showmanship has more than helped on the trail. So, cheers to you! Question, is it ok to throw around an expletive now and again. Having slide issues, so was out at the storage lot trying to diagnose, and also trying to figure out where my manual slide out hex bolt was if I had to bring in manually. Have an above floor lippert rack and pinion with ALL the parts (motor, gears, track, rod, manual hex bolt) inside the camper. For the life of me, couldn't find the manual hex bolt anywhere. Your video showed me right where it is- it's the hex bolt held in by the cotter pin. So...at least that's solved in my mind. I"ll need to play around with extensions for my drill, as- the hex bolt is probably 2 ft in underneath the dinette. Will need to figure out what will actually reach it, but...a problem for another day!

Although the slide outs give you so much space I don’t believe they are worth all the problems they cause because they are so cheaply made. Looking at that clutch assembly it looks like it might be repairable if you can get it apart. Best to you and thanks for the video 😊 !

For our size of trailer 27.6 feet and living full time in it the slide is 100 percent worth it to me. The living space with slide out versus slide in is night and day difference. Extra 36 square feet of floor space and extra storage under the day bed and over head cabinets. www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/RV-Reno-3.jpg It would be so cramped in here without it. I can't even imagine it. We'd have to go to a much longer trailer to recoup the space and that would be a much bigger pain than the slide. Cheers, Ray

Well Ray this may be a good time to trade for a new rig because you probably have added enough apps over the years that would offset the depreciation on the trailer, considering all the wiring and plumbing improvements, etc. If you could get what you paid originally for the rig would you take it? Of course if you figured in your time spent for your labor it would be worth an absolute fortune but it was material for videos so you can look at it that way. Besides, look at all the fun you had doing it!

  • @LoveYourRV

We have no compelling reason to get a new trailer. We only paid $30,000 Canadian for it back in 2011, so that's about 24,000 USD. Figure we'll hang on to this one for a while yet, maybe 5 years at least I figure. The bones of it are still pretty good. Not much in the way of corrosion on the frame being a west coast trailer and spending winters in the desert mostly. Sidewalls and fiberglass are still in decent shape, we love the layout. The walls are aluminum beam. There is no wood rot that I can find and we live in it 24/7 so usually notice pretty quick and fix right away. Maintaining it is way cheaper than getting into a comparable one for say 60-80 thousand and from what I hear most new RVs aren't very well built these days what with all the supply chain issues and labor shortages. Then there is all kinds of problems getting warranty work done in a timely fashion and by a person that is skilled at the job. I think this is likely the worse time to be buying new. If we went down the newer used route there is no guarantee it would end up better, could be a basket of new problems after spending a bunch of extra money. I'll stick with the devil I know unless say something like the frame breaks in half. :) Cheers, Ray

@@LoveYourRV That's exactly the reasoning I use to justify keeping my 1995 Ford Ranger pickup with 297,000 miles and running better than it over did. Bought it new for $8,000 and its replacement would be at least $30,000 I imagine. It'll be good for another 100,000 miles!

  • @LoveYourRV

I use many different methods. Amazon has pickup locations called hubs or lockers. Hubs are stores like say Walgreens, where you pick up at the counter. Lockers are usually outside gas stations for corner stores and you enter a code and a door opens. www.amazon.com/primeinsider/tips/amazon-locker-qa.html Then there are FedEx and UPS access points that are usually located in stores. For this motor for example I had it sent to an Auto Parts shop that was a UPS access point locations.ups.com/id/twinfalls/access-point-location-186682.html? Another way is to send to USPS general delivery - faq.usps.com/s/article/What-is-General-Delivery Some RV Parks will accept packages for customers. Back in BC on Vancouver Island since I spend months in one general area I pay for a mailbox at a UPS store. - www.theupsstore.com/mailboxes And finally, I have made friends with a great many RVers around the country so often I will have packages sent to their homes if I'm coming through the area. Cheers, Ray

huh? Where did you get $641 for a gear? This is all the info I could locate searching around the internet. Tuson sells the gear here for $60 tusonrvbrakes.com/products/nylon-gear-for-18-1-gear-ratio-lp-actuator-or-right-angled-gear-motor or there is someone on Amazon and eBay selling a metal replacement for $25.99 amzn.to/3xoVdQe The main problem is I can't locate the clutch gear anywhere so the only choice is a whole motor. Lippert has it here on their store for $751 store.lci1.com/18-to-1-tuson-motor-without-actuator-125802.html or it's on Amazon for $569 amzn.to/3O72GsX.
