Good morning Loftis family, My name is Tim and my wife and I go camping in our 2005 Itasca Meridian (very similar to your rig) several times a year. We enjoy watching your videos, and your family out exploring our beautiful country. One episode especially caught my interest. Our Itasca with the 350 cat engine was running hot in mountains of Colorado. So after your video I looked closely at my radiator air flow. Ended up removing it and washing it thoroughly along with the air charge cooler. I did this in our shop at home. Also replaced the thermostats. I want to thank you especially Michael for inspiring me to take on the clean radiator project. 3 afternoon and evenings and it’s back together. Maybe our paths will cross someday and I will thank you personally.

This gentleman brought his diesel pusher RV into this diesel shop in Texas. His engine was running hot on hard pulls. The service center said That they would research the problem, when they said that they would research the problem that means that they should had checked everything that could cause this engine to overheat during a hard pull’s first. There are two things that the shop should had check that will cause a diesel engine running hot under hard pulls. Is the engine fan working properly, is the radiator clean for air flow, If you think about it, this RV is a pusher the radiator is at the rear, that means any debris from up underneath the vehicle will penetrate through the engine compartment, through the radiator due to the engine fan is sucking air through the radiator. When the airflow is restricted. The radiator will not cool properly causing engine heating problems under hard pulls. Always remember look for the simple things first don’t go thinking it’s my water pump or is it my engine thermostat always look for the simple things first. My opinion this gentleman was overcharged.

We broke down outside of Springfield Missouri. I spent 6 hours (yes you read that right) on the phone trying to get someone to work on our DP. Once they hear it’s a motorhome, they say nope. I ended up having it towed to Freightliner, put my wife and dog on a plane and worked on it myself. I can see why the mechanics don’t want to work on it. A lot of the work is blind. You’re feeling around to get to bolts. They also charge you extra per hour than if it was a truck. The problem I found is DP’s end of creating a vortex at the back. All the road dirt gets sucked in back there. What I did and I suggest everyone do is buy a garden hose and nozzle. Once you get to your new campsite, open up the back, connect the water hose and hose down the fins. You will see a ton of dirt come out. This sure is cheaper than paying a mechanic to do exactly that when you keep overheating. The other thing you should do is gain access from the inside and hose the fins from the inside.

You are exactly right with regards to the dust. You are kicking up dust with all the tires when the engine is mounted in the back. You can go off road but you need to flush the radiator each time you go off road. You can use air to clean the radiator. The other thing you need to do is clean the air filters after each off road experience or anytime you are stirring up dust. These are easy maintenance things that will save you a ton of money down the road.

We have a 1996 Monaco. We replaced the radiator and thermostats. It won’t go over 220 degrees uphill pulling our toad on a hot day. Downside is radiator was $2500.....we also had a leaking charge air cooler replaced. Another $2500. also had to replace our 1 piece windshield....$4,000. Glad we use this for business. These old rigs are built well but when it’s time to fix, not cheap even if you are handy.

Hopefully you get the engine problem figured out. We just traded out dp in for a smaller class c diesel. It had a Cummins motor. We had trouble getting it serviced too. And yes- they are very expensive to fix. We put over $13000 in repairs this year before we traded it. They sure are fun to drive though. Best wishes.

Good attitude with all the issues. Sometimes turning the steering wheel will loosen the key? Many diesel shops are not accustomed to dealing with full-time RV families - they want you to drop it off and they get to it whenever. Bring all the kids into the office - optimal pressure, LOL. Good luck with everything and safe travels.

I just KZreadd about your key for the Jeep. Few good answers I hope for you. Your parking stick could be stuck when you shift gear into park. They can become stuck if soda or been driving with Windows down where dirt can get in when pushing button in. This guy sprayed WD-40 in the crevis of the button and then went back and forth clicking till it might not be stuck. Then back and forth from drive to park to make sure stick is fully out. Can seem fully out, but not really maybe. Also if you have a little lock shift button for overide by your stick could be locked in too. And needs to be clicked out. WD-40 that also, till pops out. 😊

At my work, our little Chevy cars would do that because of defective shifter mechanism, basically the car didnt know it was in park. Mayby that's what going on, but with 100k on ours wev never had that, but have had the trans acted like its slipping after taking it out of 4x4 , just a restart of the engine solves that if ya ever have that happen. Every RV option has its bonuses and detractions. The big draw back with the motorhome is that your engine/chassis is mated to your house. So when it needs maintenance, the house has to go too. That's one advantage about the 5th wheel. If the truck needed maintenance, you could just drop it off and cool your heels in your RV until its fixed. Not to mention that since your pulling chassis is a pick up truck, service centers are more abundantly available. Also, most modern 1 ton diesel trucks produce more power and torque than many diesel pusher engines. My 2018 Ram with 6.7L Cummins makes 370hp and a monstrous 800lb/ft of torque. It climbs mountains like Billy goat :) I do understand why you made the switch though. Hope you get it fixed quickly.

Yes I see your point. That was something I considered when we decided to get a 5th Wheel in the 1st place. But even they need repairs at times and can be at the RV dealer or shop.. Keep Your Daydream had to spend some night in a motel which their new 5th wheel had warranty work done. It happens to us all eventually. Thank you!

I'm so sorry about your windshield. There's a good chance that a rock got throwed up when it was being towed. Some Class A Rvers have a shield type thing to help. Or maybe you just got it when you were off roading. But I'm sorry to say that's just one of the pit and down falls of off roading. I with our insurance. It's just cheaper to pay for it ourselves. We use Safe Lite for our windshields. There's a slight chance with the towing of it and with the heat. It could possibly shatter the windshield. It probably won't fall out. Just shatter. Believe me I had it to happen before. It's so depressing. And Safe Lite will come to your location and put it in. I'll keep your family in my prayers. Remember come to the Great Smoky Mountains and see me and my husband. We would give you and your family a good old fashioned cook out. Safe travels.

Is the power steering working correctly? On most Units it uses the same hydraulic systems as the engine fan. You might want to verify the radiator is really clean... couldn’t hurt to check behind them. Highly unlikely, but the fan motor should be checked to be sure it’s turning the right RPM. Good luck with your unit. My hubby gave me all this advice to share. We have a diesel pusher and love it, but have had a few repair adventures too. He’s a trained diesel mechanic and has handled all the repairs himself. Thank God.

The diesel will out last any gas engine hands down. You're right about CAT engine, I've had a Cummin's and now a CAT engine. I'm with you I'd rather have a Cummin's engine. But we just need to keep them serviced. The oil I've been told has something to do with the fuel rail.

I am sure you have this fixed by now, but found these comments on a forum. Just info to review, you may already be aware of these other areas to check. Note: the reference to under passenger seat is on referring to passenger side, but is at rear of the coach. There are 3 accesses that I have used to clean the inside of the radiator. The most effective is under the bed raised and with the engine cover removed. From this position you look down onto the inside surface of the radiator. Soak well with 1:1 simple green (or other degreaser) and water. Using a garden sprayer with a long tip you can get most of the top half of the radiator. From the bottom front under the driver seat you can get about 25% of the radiator, you will have to squirt the liquid between the fan blades which must be rotated slightly to get it all. You may have to crank the engine. I have been able to rotate the blade by hand but is difficult. The 3rd access is under the passenger seat but again the fan blade will have to be rotated. After all of this is sprayed, I also soak the outside surface of the radiator by trying to squirt the cleaning fluid directly into the radiator fins. You can rinse with water but if you have a really thick build up you may have to use a pressure washer or car wash sprayer directly into the outside rear of the radiator to get it really clean. When doing this hold the sprayer far enough away from the radiator fins to avoid bending them. You can tell when the radiator is clean. With the engine on, the fan should uniformly blow air through all areas of the radiator. Also, if you dont have a closed crankcase, you may want the extend the oil blowby tube (crankcase oil vapor exhaust) so that it vents beyond the radiator. good luck jim & debbie, 04 Journey, suzuki toad Best of luck to a speedy fix. Rick

Your key situation could,be anti theft , I have a Infiniti fx35 and the key/steering will lock up if it thinks it's being jacked with! You have to turn the wheel as you finagle the key! Your manual will explain if it is in fact the issue . One other suggestion on your windshield ... I wouldn't wait to get that replaced ... it is very compromised now and if another rock hits it , it could shatter and might cause a very dangerous situation. We lived in the west (Utah) for 9 years and replaced 5 windshields !! The west is just notorious for having rock issues along the roads. Sorry your having all these issues ~ but maybe they are done and you can ride in peace now!

Nope, nice always. Hard working mechanics can’t stand whiners...this is to test your patience, lol 😆. When I worked at Volvo. There was a big sign in the shop that said, “$60 an hour; if you watch or ask, $100 an hour”💁🏻‍♀️ 🤣. When you pull out your key, we found we had to make sure you pull it out by pulling it ‘up’ and out. I know we usually don’t think about it, we just pull the key out and lock the car, but If you pull the key out quick and have a tendency to pull ‘down’ when you pull it out of the cylinder, you may misalign the inside of the cylinder...our Rendezvous had that issue.
