ℹ️ About the episode:
As you know, we kicked off this season with the ABC's of motorized RVing. It wasn't easy. We saw some stuff. We also learned a lot and wanted to provide a recap of our experience to set proper expectations if or when you rent an RV. Yes, we know our rental "series" (so to speak) wasn't super compelling and this video isn't overly uplifting, but there are good reasons to rent RVs and going into it with all the information can make the experience great.

There are other RV type channels on KZread here...none are as informative, upbeat and positive as Trish and Marc, even when the tough get goin they find the upside...even if a valve is left open by mistake on a rental. These folks are the real deal...the kind of people you'd enjoy a beer with shooting the breeze. Stay this way Leach family!

Great summary and tips. I rent my Airstream Interstate Lounge out of my house in Covington Louisiana. It’s on RVshare (shameless plug)! I’m the guy you talked about wanting to rent from. It’s my only RV and I keep it ready to take my own family on a trip! We provide 1hr tutorial and a binder of laminated photos with instructions for everything (black/grey dumps, inverter, generator, where to put in fuel, etc..). Love the channel and keep up the great content.

Renting a rig is how we ended up buying our first Travel Trailer. We reserved it I went and looked at it, it was rough so I brought my wife to see it. She quietly walked through it, then looked at me and said let’s drive up to ***** rv and look at what there is to buy. That’s was 4 rigs ago.

My folks bought a small used travel trailer when I was in my teens but our first adventure in it was at the local KOA on the other side of the expressway from where we lived. It was literally 2 miles away from the house. It turned out to be a good thing because we discovered that we left all the important stuff and brought useless stuff. Also, we discovered we did not like cartridge toilets. I was hooked forever from that day on that RVing was an awesome way to go on vacation. We ended up selling it before we took any real vacations in it because my little brother, who was (and still is) not a happy camper, was born nine months later. We tried two trips after he was born but he screamed all night and no one slept on both occasions. I know this experience has nothing to do with renting, but renting with the idea of testing out on a short distance trip what you like is a good idea and will save you lots of money in the long run.

We rented a 1 year old Class B+ few years back through Outdoorsy, private owner, and it was wonderful! Lugging our stuff into the van and finding homes right away for our stuff was stressful, but the owners did provide all the main necessities which was awesome! Grill, table, all cooking needs, chairs, rug and so on. We did bring our own bedding and SO GLAD for it too! We did pay extra for extra mileage, and a lost hubcap that happened on an overpass during construction and concrete lane barriers. We looked at each other and laughed wryly saying, welp, so that happened and there is NO WAY we can safely retrieve it. Ugh! ($250 dollar Mercedes replacement!) But HIGHLY recommend using Outdoorsy with a private owner. The expectation Marc was looking for and never had, we totally DID have with our owner! Spent a good 1-2 hours going through EVERY thing, which although time consuming, was what we needed as first time RV'rs! It was great!

The laundry trip is BRILLIANT! We own a new 2021 Minnie Winnie 25B(class C) and we love it. We have two big dogs, and a 10 year old and we live in the Pacific NW. The rig has provided so fun trips already - Oregon/Cali coast, Yellowstone, Hoh rainforest- just to name a few. We are so excited for future trips we have planned, and really happy that our dogs finally get to come with us, and don’t end up in a kennel somewhere. I always get so much from your videos. Thank you so much for your effort.

I rented an RV one time in my life and it was a wonderful experience. We were the first people to rent this particular RV which was brand new. Unfortunately, being new the kinks weren’t worked out of it, and the second day the fridge stopped working so we spent 1/2 day having it repaired, but we were just traveling where the road took us so we didn’t care. I personally think it’s a good thing to rent first to see if you even like RVing knowing that you’re going to have negative issues. Renting is also a good way to help you decide if a particular RV is right for your family. I rented a class c then bought a class A as we found out the class C was too small for our needs and desires. Thanks for sharing this video!

Thanks for sharing this season. We've all heard the advice to "rent before you buy" when it comes to an RV. Your experiences showed that doing a rental is not always rainbows and gumdrops. Going into a rental, and having a bad time might put someone off from buying an RV because it just isn't fun. I was particularly shocked about the condition of the Class C. I know these things get wear due to usage, but that thing was rode hard and put up wet. One reason you might have had trouble finding a private rental is that the emotional liability is too great for individual owners to place their units into rental service. I have a friend who rented an RV this last week to take to church youth camp. My friend has *zero* RV experience but took off down the road with someone's baby. Unfortunately, he backed into a tree and did some damage to the rig. Yes, he had insurance, but now someone has to deal with that. At least if I back my own rig on a tree, (or a post at the storage place wink, wink) I have no one to blame but myself. Thanks for the channel, and the inspiration. I look forward to you heading back east and the adventure that brings.

A few months in and I've already torn things out, rebuilt it, and I plan to keep making mods. But, when it's yours, you get to make it YOURS. Also, I will never forget a black tank valve due to your "experience". Thanks for taking one for the team!! Lol.

Well, having had truck slide in campers, then a 27' travel trailer, then a larger truck camper with a slide, and now a diesel pusher...I'm sure you've all figured out over these rigs...I've gotten older too, so the Class A is my favourite, but most expensive to maintain...but we love it once it's set up and the adventure begins! It all comes down in the end...to the memories, the cost will be the part of the memory that fades. What is truly interesting, is reading through some/many of the comments here, and I think a lot of us would get along very nicely, and honestly for me that's one of the joys of RVing I like the most, is the social aspect of meeting others, learning from one another, and having some good belly laughs! Everyone stay safe and take care!!

Another perspective on renting - after a couple of years of intense research (online and at some rv shows), I knew that the Thor Vegas 24.1 was the rig and floorplan I really wanted. However, I was very nervous about driving it because even though it is smaller, it is designed like a class A. I didn’t want to make that big of an investment without really knowing if I felt comfortable driving it (solo female here). Fortunately I found one on RVShare within a day’s drive. So glad I did. Driving it was a breeze, I loved it and a few months later, I bought one (used). So happy.

We loved it but all of the challenges you shared were so dead on!! The comment on sharing was good. About 6 years ago, I got a deal on Living Social for camping at a place where we had camped previously in a trailer - only this was one of their cabins (Park Model RV). We had been thinking about buying property and had looked, but nothing felt right. We spent the weekend there, and on the way home, we looked at each other and said, "This is what we want." We waited a bit until the time was right, and then purchased 1/4 interest in one of the privately owned cabins there. Right now, we spend our vacation time there (we have one person who takes the requests and then schedules out the weeks of the year, so we can get two back-to-back) and as many of the weekends of our weeks as possible. It's our own slice of heaven, and the purchase cost as well as the ongoing maintenance costs are 1/4 of what they would be otherwise. It's definitely been a big win for us.

I was driven to rent in the late 90s by the previous 20 years use of my father‘s collection of Winnebagos. No matter where I went with dad‘s coach I would spend a week or two underneath working on everything from the suspension to the engine to the storage systems etc. Long story short and someday I’m going to make a video of this history onto a new relationship I decided to buy the coach of my dreams I did not want to subject My knew family to all of the exciting adventures I had had previously ! Someday will all sit down and swap some incredible stories! Thomyt

We rented travel trailers every year when the kids were small. Always had to stock the with supplies. We looked at it as exploring what we wanted to buy. We have now bought what we wanted from all those experiences.

We have rented every class of RV. Even back in the late 80s early 90s. The best trips ever! We have always used the big guys. Always been expensive and extra for the home effects. Really enjoyed the suggestion of a laundromat to do it all then you aren’t tired to your washer and dryer for the week following. Thanks

Great video 👍 I rented through Cruise America 2 years ago with 0 RV experience. They were great & easy to work with- those hidden expenses are real though! My first stop was a thrift store to pick up necessities as I had flown in. SLC-PHX, very memorable trip. ✨ Full time over a year and a half now in a bumper pull 💜

Our first RV experience was 16 years ago. My son wa 14. We rented a CruiseAmerica picked up in Albuquerque after living in Hawaii for 20 years. A great tour of the western US. New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and back again. Everything was great until Washington. After that we chopped the AC under a motel awning. We blew tires in N California. Smashed dump pipe in Lake Tahoe and clipped lane markers for construction in Las Vegas. 6 years ago, we told our now grown son we bought a 5th wheel. His response was priceless. “You’ve got

Thank you for discussing which way would be the best way to go for an Rv. We rented one of those Class As. Yep you were right it cost us $500.00 per day to rent. And we had problems with it too when they gave it to us. But glad you dud this renting of Rvs to test the waters. It gave us all a heads up what it’s like Rv in different Rvs. Thank you Marc and Trish.

After watching maybe a dozen of your (mostly more recent) videos, and looking over many RV rental listings to get an idea what things people would charge for (yes, generator time and daily mileage, who knew?!), then deciding that we would upgrade from a Journey to a Durango (and thus could actually tow something), hubby and I took our two preschoolers off on an eleven-day, 3400mi round trip in a rented A frame trailer. It was crazy, and many tantrums were thrown by all, but it was also a really good trip and a good intro to the RV gig. Enough of a trailer to be a solid shelter, without being so huge or complicated as to intimidate us newbies. We aren't sure we would chose to own that model, but now we have a frame of reference for going forward. Sometimes, yes, you do just have to take that crazy leap and roll with it. Thanks for the videos. :)

This is such a fantastic series. Spot on with renting is a lot of work. You have to move all of your stuff in before you even start your trip, and then at the end you have to move out and clean up. Every. Time. You rent. And yes, we brought our own mattress pads for everyone. Great idea, worked well. We rented a couple times last summer, enjoyed it (even with all the work) and want to continue. But we are really not sure if we are going to rent again or wait until we afford our own. The biggest benefit was learning what kind and size rv we want. That alone made renting worth it. And finding out we really enjoy rv'ing!

The best advice you ever gave and and it helped so much on the road this year was to go slow. I was always stopping myself from rushing and forgetting or misplacing. I kept saying, "Go slow." Thanks for that! I bought a like new 2002 Class A with 11,040 miles on it and must have been just a week ahead of you because you went every place in FL I went. What are the chances?! Had a great 1st alone experience this past winter. When we went as kids, we each had "our dept". Dad placed each of us in charge of 1 or 2 things. We had to not mess up. No excuses. We were a working crew. Good way to teach kids who have never had to do anything around the house. You do it on the road.

Just came back from Yellowstone and we rented a travel trailer. It was an amazing experience. Our mindset is to rent a few different trailers so we know what we use, need or don't need. Buying a trailer is a large investment and we don't really want to go in blind.

As always a great video. Loved this series. We rented a class B a couple of years ago. It was through RV Share, but rented from a local dealer. Our mission = Trip to the NY Airshow (we live in MA) and try out RVing (I had never been camping at 59 years old). Yes, renting was expensive, but we accomplished our mission. Waiting out the traffic in comfort after the airshow was priceless. We learned that the RV size was good for two of us, but my husband hated driving the ProMaster. We never would have known how much he disliked driving the ProMaster without spending 3 days driving the van.

Great advice, we started the same way. Rented a Class C so we could take the dog. We realized he didn’t care for the ride but we didn’t go far and the weekend was great but we were stuck with no bikes or toad. My daughter was close and came to stay with us so crisis avoided. Ran into friends that had a fifth wheel so my wife had a new perspective on the potential. We learned a lot in a short trip. Fast forward to the “lost year” and my wife began to get cabin fever by June so she suggested we look at RV’s and get out in the open air. Turned out a guy at work knew of a travel trailer that was in great shape with low miles, we jumped on a 2015 TT V Lite. Great unit and having fun but now the wife wants longer trips and a fifth wheel is on her mind. She even stated we need a dually so weigh isn’t a problem. You need to start to learn and advance.

Great content. I'm currently sitting in my first RV rental from El Monte for my military retirement Grand Circle road trip and the process was very smooth. Granted, I did a LOT of research beforehand and we're renting outside peak season. Was going to go with Cruise America at first, but after further research, their RVs didn't really seem to be in the best shape. El Monte hooked us up with a 2022 Class C that is sparkling clean, so I'm happy. I would like to purchase a Class A sometime in the future.

A very interesting video. I was hoping you would fold in the New Zealand rental into this video. It seems that was very different from these videos and that was a corporate rental also. I’ll say this much, and we’ve considered flying to Alaska and renting to save wear and tear on our Class C, but this video, and I’m glad we watched it, is giving me second thoughts. Great info!

Between the cost and the ick factor we have agreed we will wait till we have our own rig. At that point we are aware that our Commit-arriage will be solid and we'll figure it all out. Renting could possibly deter us from ever going full time. Until then we'll keep preparing (paying bills off, saving up for the rig) and keep up on our road trips...oh...and learning SOOOO much from you guys and the community!

Wow you guys are amazing! I want to be you when i grow up. My husband and I sold our home in Philly and bought an amazing rehab property in Mount Dora, Florida that we are renovating with 3 Airbnb listings plus it's our primary residence. We bought our firsr class C from Cruise America. I know far from a desirable Airstream but it's a first step. While we reno our property and get the Airbnb running smoothly we are partnering with a guy who manages the rental of our Class C via Outdoorsy ect. No time to travel until we finish this massive reno. Omg! You guys make it all look so easy! You've got it made. You're home/vacation rental and seasonally RV AND a YT channel. We just want to generate our Airbnb income so we can pay our bills and RV seasonally too. It's been so hard to make it happen. We are on our 3rd month of reno and hopefully will launch the Airbnb in July. How did you guys do it and jungle it all so well. I must be missing something because it has not been easy. SOMEDAY we hope to be able to live the part time RV life and vacation rental out our property. Kudos to you both for achieving so much.

I really enjoyed your review. I was considering a class a, but now I'll keep my 5th wheel. It's great and I didn't know it. We keep our RV stocked with the items we will need except for food. Getting ready to go is about a 2 hr process and I do clean up the last day before getting home so it only takes a couple of hours. We flush the blank tank into our septic system. Great Vid.

I've rented RV's for years and truly enjoy it. Can only get away a couple of times a year, so a purchase is out of the question. If you are renting an RV for the first time and have never driven an RV before, rent one for 3 or 4 days and make it a short distance from home. You will gain a wealth of experience and knowledge during that trip. This will make you an experience RV'er and you'll be confident and prepared for a really big trip with the family further away from home. Good luck and happy RV'ing
