I replaced the 2 FLA GC-2 golf cart batteries that were located under the steps of my motorhome with lithium batteries. My goal was to have the highest capacity LiFePo-4s that would fit in this limited space. If we were to go with pre-assembled batteries, we could only fit 2, 100ah lithiums in this small space. So, we decided to build our own 560ah LiFePo-4 battery bank with a 350amp Heltec BMS (to start the 5,500-watt onboard generator) and a 5a active balancer for under $1,500. We built our 12v battery out of 8 grade "A" 280ah LiFePo-4 prismatic cells having a manufacturer's projected life of 6,000 cycles at 100% DOD. This means that if we cycled them 100% every single day, 365 days a year, they would last over 16 years! So, they're obviously going to wear out from age before they wear out from cycling as we only use 15-20% of their capacity daily giving us enough reserve capacity for several days of bad weather before we have to run our generator for charging. They even saved us 35 lbs. compared to our old FLA batteries and have over 5 times their capacity. Of course, they are not just a drop-in battery replacement, but required unlinking our house and chassis batteries and installing a battery-to-battery charger so the alternator doesn't fry itself trying to dump too many amps into them when going down the road. We also replaced our lead acid charge controller with a Progressive Dynamics 80A lithium compatible one to minimize generator run time. We didn't need to replace our charge controller but were able to reprogram it for the LiFePo-4 chemistry instead. We top balanced the cells before we assembled the battery, though they were all within a tenth of a volt when we received them. This was probably unnecessary as our 5-amp active balancer would have done the job, as it keeps the individual cell voltage to within about a thousandth of a volt, but spending this much money, we wanted to do the job right. Building our own battery from the raw cells took some time and research, but it was very economical. You can even build one a couple hundred dollars cheaper with grade "B" cells but why waste your time with junk? It's like those super cheap lithiums available now made with "B" cells. They are cheap alright, but the cells are unmatched and won't stay in balance, reducing both capacity and life. If makes far more sense to go with a quality battery with new, matched, grade "A" prismatic cells, like the Enduro if you're in the market for a pre-made battery with a decent warranty. We insulated the battery compartment, cut a 1" hole in our step risers and installed a tiny computer CPU fan to circulate just enough air from inside our coach into his compartment to keep this space at close to room temperature. This way we don't have to worry about the BMS shutting down charging if they get too cold - or their life reduced from getting too hot. This is probably an unnecessary precaution as we are FTers who follow the seasons so hardly ever camp at either temperature extreme. Like the song says, "we like to stay where the weather fits our clothes."

The 12V fridges that I’ve been looking at recently run on about 1/3-1/2 of the amps that this guy mentioned in this video.

He’s vaguely wrong, the absorption, low 1970s tech refrigerator consumes propane and battery power to work and is way less efficient than a 12 V or residential 120 V refrigerator. Not to mention the 12 V refrigerator can completely get to temperature cooling everything and freezing everything in 2 hours. The absorption refrigerator won’t work 100% correctly unless the RV is perfectly level and takes 24hrs to get to cooling level, another drawback. The 120 V refrigerator even using an inverter is more efficient than a 12 V refrigerator Because the 120 V refrigerator only runs eight hours out of a 24 hour period, The 12 V refrigerator runs nonstop 24 hours. Either way both are still way more efficient and bigger giving you more space more cooling and freezing power than that old absorption refrigerator. Typically the efficient refrigerators consume about 350 Watts or less. Look for the energy star rating that matches the price you want to spend. About 2 of those lithium batteries 100Ah will run a 12v 10cuft refrigerator for 3 days. That works for the weekend camping, charging back when you get home,or shore power, or start generator. Solar combo is best, make sure products you use are UL listed. All of these lithium batteries are made in China with middleman branding on them. Make sure you buy it from a reputable company that has UL listing and a warranty that won’t expire when they go out of business. As far as storing with the lead acid, all you have to do is disconnect the negative on the battery terminal making sure it doesn’t retouch the terminal. I have stored vehicles over six months, no trickle charger and just reconnected the battery with full power. No power loss.

My question is if you’re going with that many batteries 12 V is not efficient why didn’t he recommend you go to a 48 V system especially when you’re using solar as well? 12 V uses very high amp levels so you will spend a lot of money on cabling plus not being efficient. It’s all gonna do be dependent on your load calculations for what you want to run but either way you look at it 48 V is the way to go less amps smaller cabling

False!!!!! Most lead acid batteries are SLA batteries which have zero maintenance. They last around 10 years. They are also year-round batteries -50 below to 120 above it makes no difference they work just fine and can be charged or discharged at any temperature. Lithium not so much. Summertime only. SLA Turn off the disconnect if you want or leave it on all year. Venting? Those days are long gone. 11 to 12 cf 12-volt fridges in RVs use about 3 amps per hr.
